Some light showers and/or drizzle continue to linger across
eastern portions of the area early this morning, though they have
diminished quite a bit in the past half hour or so. Differential
cyclonic vorticity advection from another 500 mb shortwave trough
helping with the light showers/drizzle. This should continue to
dissipate over the next hour or two. Otherwise, the forecast is
on track for today and tonight.
AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...
Some light showers and drizzle should continue to dissipate by
12Z or so. Otherwise, expect ceilings around 1000 to 1500 feet to
gradually rise into VFR category today. Southwest winds will
remain somewhat gusty into this morning, with gusts to around 20
knots near Lake Michigan. Winds will become south and weaken this
afternoon.
Next round of rain should move northeast into the area later this
afternoon and early this evening. The rain, with 2 to 4 mile
visibility values, will remain over the area tonight. It should
linger in the northern parts of the area into Tuesday morning.
Light southeast to east winds are generally expected. Ceilings
should drop to 500 to 1000 feet by later tonight, lingering into
Tuesday morning. Gusty west winds are expected by later Tuesday
morning into the afternoon.

TODAY AND TONIGHT...Forecast Confidence - High.
Some light showers and drizzle continue to linger across
portions of the area this morning, with differential cyclonic
vorticity advection from another 500 mb shortwave trough moving
through. This should linger until sunrise or so before dissipating.
There should a lull in the precipitation for most of today, with
mostly cloudy skies and southwest winds. Highs should reach the
upper 40s in most area.
Main 500 mb shortwave trough moves northeast through the region
later today and tonight, with a negative tilt. This will combine
with low level jet nose transporting moisture and upward vertical
motion into the area by 00Z Tuesday, with some warm air advection,
to bring another round of rain to the area later this afternoon
and tonight. Kept high PoPs going for this round of rain. Should
see another 0.30 to 0.50 inches of precipitation.
Winds will be lighter than with the last system, as surface low
pressure moves east northeast across northern Illinois into lower
Michigan. Lows tonight should remain mild, in the lower to middle
40s.
TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Medium
to High.
Negatively tilted, amplifying short wave trof will be moving
northward across southern WI Tuesday morning. Expect widespread
precipitation to be in progress across northern CWA, but the
diminishing trend will continue through the morning
as the upper trof and low level circulation shift rapidly northeast.
A tightening pressure gradient in the wake of the passing surface
low pressure system over Lake Michigan will result in blustery west
to northwest winds and low level cold air advection for most of
Tuesday. The negative lift associated with the cold air advection
and low to mid level drying will end the precipitation most areas by
the afternoon, but may linger in the far north. West winds will
likely gust to 30 mph in the afternoon. A secondary weaker short
wave will move across central and southern WI later Tuesday night.
Short term guidance both show some moisture return below 10K feet
but GFS more bullish with deeper moisture. For now, introduced low
pops for -shsn across the north later Tuesday night. The blustery
west winds will continue on Wednesday. Lingering pool of cold air
and trofiness will result in bkn low clouds and a raw, cold day.
925H temps of -3 to -5C will keep temperatures in the 30s
most of the day, with wind chills in the 20s for a time. Wednesday
will be the start of a period of below normal temperatures with
temperatures frequently below freezing.
EXTENDED PERIOD...
THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Low to
Medium.
Some trend toward agreement in the Medium Range guidance
in the earlier periods but disagreement continues for the weekend.
However one factor that all extended guidance can agree on is that
the colder temperatures will be here to stay through the weekend.
Recent deterministic ECMWF runs have come into better agreement with
GFS/GEM solutions for the Thursday night/Friday time frame. Mid-
level long wave troffing will continue to amplify from southern
Canada into the upper midwest and western Great lakes during this
period, nudging deeper moisture and low level baroclinic zone well
to the southeast of southern WI. Low pressure will develop along
this zone in the vicinity of the TN Valley region and move northeast
toward the Atlantic seaboard by Fri night. The large precipitation
shield from this system to remain well to the southeast of
WI, trending away from earlier runs of the ECMWF. However weaker
mid-level short waves embedded in long-wave trof may bring some -sn
or -shsn to the area Thursday night into Friday night. 925H temps
remain below zero during the period so many areas likely to
see at least some -sn. Pavement temps will be cooling
rapidly with daytime temps both Fri and Sat only rising to
around or a little above freezing. Hence some minor
accumulations on roads would not be out of the question.
Low confidence in outlook for the weekend. GFS waffling and
bringing a clipper system across WI Saturday afternoon and night.
ECMWF/GEM solutions leaning toward a warm air advection/isentropic
lift -sn threat Saturday night and Sunday as cold northwest steering
flow begins to turn more zonal. Bottom line is prepare for the cold
and several periods of -sn with the potential for minor
accumulations from Thu night through the weekend. Some good news
is that GFS 500H 5-day means does continues to show large
negative anomoly that builds in this week, eventually gets replaced
by weakly positive heights by later next week.

Otherwise, expect ceilings around 1000 feet to gradually rise into
the 2500 to 3000 foot range today. Southwest winds will remain
somewhat gusty into this morning, with gusts to around 20 knots

Nearshore Waters...The Small Craft Advisory has been extended to
15Z today. Still expecting some southwest gusts to reach 22 knots
or higher away from shore, until the middle morning hours.
A Small Craft Advisory will be needed for tonight into Wednesday
night in later forecasts, after the current headline expires.
Another round of Small Craft Advisory level waves are possible
tonight, with gusty west winds for Tuesday into Wednesday night.
Waves will build to 3 to 5 feet tonight, as increasing southeast
to east winds bring the higher waves. Gusty west winds are then
expected for Tuesday into Wednesday night, with gusts to 30 knots
at times.
Open Waters...Allowed Gale Warning to expire for the north half
of Lake Michigan at 09Z. Wind gusts have fallen to around 30 knots
or lower over that portion of the lake.
A Gale Watch has been issued for the south half of the open waters
of Lake Michigan, from 15Z Tuesday until 00Z Wednesday. Another
period of gales are possible during this period. West gales to 35
knots are possible. Waves should build to 7 to 10 feet, with
occasional waves to 13 feet by later Tuesday.
