.DISCUSSION...Updates were made and sent earlier to bring the near
term forecast in line with the higher resolution models. This
lowered precipitation amounts some this afternoon for areas south
of the Umpqua Divide. Shortwaves moving through the area today
will maintain ongoing showers across the forecast area through
this evening, with snow levels hovering around 4500 to 5000 feet.
Winter Weather Advisories remain in place for impacts expected due
to increased traffic from holiday travel. For today, this mainly
applies to the Cascades and northern portion of Klamath County
like Chemult. Earlier concerns for freezing rain this morning will
wane within the next hour or so as temperatures warm and snow
levels rise above those elevations.
The attention for this afternoon's package will be on the low
pressure system expected tomorrow. It's a particularly
challenging forecast because a difference of about 500 feet in
snow levels could potentially have significant impacts due to
holiday traffic. Currently it looks like some areas will start out
as snow, then transition rain, while others will have snow
throughout the day and it could potentially be a significant
amount, especially east of the Cascades. We'll be ironing out the
details today and seeing if the Winter Weather Advisories need any

UPDATE...Temperatures are at and below freezing for many east
side areas and as showers have moved overhead local areas of
freezing rain have developed, including at Klamath Falls. Periods
of light freezing rain mixed with snow are expected this morning
for most eastern valleys and some lower passes on area highways
east of the Cascades. Freezing rain will mix with snow. Freezing
rain along with snow may make roadways very slick and icy. A
winter weather advisory for freezing rain has been issued. Please
see the WSWMFR for details.

SHORT TERM...A moist and cool airmass over the area will bring
scattered to numerous showers today and tonight. Snow levels will
be around 4500 to 5000 feet. In showers, periods of moderate snow
are expected across the Southern Oregon Cascades today and
tonight. Next, a robust low pressure system will approach the
Southern Oregon coast early Monday morning then move onshore
during the day Monday. This low will bring significant travel
impacts with snow expected over the higher terrain.
Models show good agreement that moderate precipitation will
spread across the area Monday. With snow levels around 4500 to
5000 feet during the day Monday as this system moves into the
area, expect widespread snow impacts across the higher terrain in
the Cascades and for areas east of the Cascades. West of the
Cascades, moderate snow is expected across western Siskiyou County
and across the Siskiyou mountains mainly above 5000 feet. However
snow may fall down to 4000 feet at times during the day Monday in
heavier showers. Models indicate that snow may be heavy at times
late Monday morning and Monday afternoon. One inch per hour
snowfall rates are possible, especially in the Cascades and
across higher mountains in western Siskiyou County and near Mount
Shasta. Winter weather advisories for snow remain in place from
the Cascades east and Siskiyous south through Monday evening.
Significant holiday travel impacts are expected. Please see the
WSWMFR for details.
For the coast and western valleys expect moderate rain on
Monday. Rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected across
inland valleys west of the Cascades and amounts 0.6 to 1.5 inches
are expected along the coast and into the coastal mountains.Along
the coast south of Cape Blanco, models continue to show weak
instability developing aloft as this low moves onshore during the
day Monday. This will bring a slight chance of thunderstorms to
the coast and coast waters. Also expect some marginal instability
inland to bring locally heavy precipitation.
Gusty winds are expected over the mountains and into the southern
Shasta valley as the low moves inland Monday as well.
Monday evening, expect widespread showers with rain and snow as
the low moves south and an upper trough moves over the area. Snow
levels are expected to lower to 4000 feet Monday evening. Snow
levels will lower further, down to 3500 feet Monday night as
light showers continue over the area.
On Christmas day, an upper ridge will gradually build into the
area from the west. Expect scattered showers during the morning
then isolated showers are expected in the afternoon, with best
chances for areas from the Cascades east.
PREVIOUS LONG TERM...Tuesday night through Saturday...The
operational 12z GFS and 12z ECWMF, both show a ridge in place over
the area through Tuesday night. Wednesday morning the models are
showing a trough slowly pushing into the coast, as well as
increasing PoP chances for the entire CWA through the morning and
afternoon hours. Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon,
shows a slow transition into a post-frontal environment. Thursday
evening through Saturday has a ridge slowly becoming the dominate
feature into next weekend. Towards Saturday afternoon, the GFS has
the ridge axis sharply tilting positively, and collapsing on top
of a Rocky Mountain Low. This looks to develop an offshore wind
pattern for next weekend. Temperatures for the extended period,
are looking to stay slightly above normal. /42
AVIATION...For the 23/12Z TAFs...Expect widespread MVFR with
terrain obscured today through tonight, though with areas of VFR as
well. Brief IFR is possible along the south coast at Brookings and
also over some inland valleys due to a combination of light rain,
snow and/or fog/mist. -Spilde
MARINE...Updated 230 AM PST Sunday 23 December 2018...Heavy west
swell will produce very steep and hazardous seas today. Bars and
surf zones will also be quite hazardous. Guidance continues to show
a fairly vigorous low pressure center moving through the waters on
Monday. South winds ahead of this disturbance should be gusty then
switch abruptly to north or northwesterly and remain fairly strong
Monday night. Conditions remain hazardous to small craft.
Northerlies will gradually diminish Christmas Day and night with
seas lowering below 10 feet. Winds then turn southerly again ahead
of the next front on Wednesday and another steep swell train will
arrive Wednesday night into Thursday. -Spilde
