.DISCUSSION...The main adjustments to the forecast today was to
fine tune some of the details for this morning and afternoon.
Colder air aloft will move over the waters later this afternoon
and some of the short range high res models suggest convection is
possible over the outer portions of the marine waters, so added a
slight chance of thunder there. Elsewhere, at least west of the
Cascades, we should catch a relative break in the weather with
showers far and few in between and mainly light.

Snow showers will continue along the Cascades the rest of the
morning with some road snow possible. However we'll have a better
chance of seeing wet roads late this morning and afternoon as
daytime heating allows roads to warm up.

Steady light precipitation east of the Cascades will gradually
shift east this afternoon. A few spots like highway 140 over
Warner Mountain Summit are showing slush in spots, otherwise they
are wet and should remain that way through this afternoon.

A preliminary look at the latest guidance shows the next round of
precipitation arriving at the coast late tonight, then moving
inland during the day Thursday. See previous discussion for

.MARINE...Updated 815 AM PDT Wednesday 14 Mar 2018...Steep seas will
persist through the day due to a combination of southerly fresh
swell and building longer period west swell. Seas will diminish by
late this afternoon, but another front will sweep through the waters
tonight into Thursday, producing gusty south winds and steep, wind
driven seas. Steep seas may continue into Friday, but conditions
will improve by Saturday morning. Uncertainty increases late weekend
into early next week as a broad low pressure system moves southeast
towards the coast, with several disturbances possible, each capable

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 449 AM PDT Wed Mar 14 2018/

SHORT TERM...The overall pattern features a deep trough over
eastern North America, strong ridging over the nation's
midsection and another deep trough/associated closed low over the
eastern Pacific/along the West Coast.

The upper trough along the West Coast will continue to push
onshore today and this will keep showers going especially in
northern California and from the Cascades/Siskiyous eastward.
There has been some snow overnight, mainly over the mountains, but
snow levels are currently about 3000-3500 feet and web cams have
shown some snow on the roads at Snowman's Summit on Highway 89
near Mount Shasta City. Snow amounts should be relatively light
this morning, but travelers should check road conditions before
venturing out. It isn't out of the question there could be an
isolated lightning strike or two again over the East Side this
afternoon, but the possibility wasn't high enough to include in
the forecast.

A relative break is expected tonight as the upper trough shifts
eastward and the closed low offshore settles southward, though
showers will linger in NE California and over Lake County. The
closed low will approach from the NW on Thursday. Precipitation
will arrive at the coast Thursday morning, then spread inland
during the day. The heaviest precipitation will be focused in the
Coast Ranges of SW Oregon and in northern California including the
Mount Shasta Region. Snow levels down near or even just below
2000 feet Thursday morning will rise to 2500-3000 feet in the
afternoon. This should keep snow from accumulating significantly
on roadways during the day, just due to an increasing March sun
angle. But, a period of heavier snow in western Siskiyou County
and perhaps also near Mount Shasta could result in some road
accumulation over the higher passes (Sawyers Bar Road, Scott
Mountain and Snowman's Summit). Thursday night after dark and into
Friday morning could end up being a bigger concern for
accumulating snow in and around Mount Shasta, including I-5 and
Highway 89, but precipitation rates appear to diminish during this
time frame. Overall, impacts look relatively minor, but a winter
weather advisory may be necessary in some areas.

The closed low should be very near Brookings early Friday morning,
then will move inland across northern California Friday afternoon.
This will keep plenty of showers across the forecast area. Snow
levels once again start out near 2000 feet, but rise to 2500-3500
feet in the afternoon. -Spilde

LONG TERM...Friday night through Tuesday...Models show good
agreement with an upper low forecast over the area Friday night
then the low is forecast to gradually shift southeast out of the
area late Saturday. Cool temperatures and widespread showers are
expected with this upper low Friday night into Saturday. Snow
levels are expected around 2000 to 3000 feet during this period.
So some accumulating snow is possible on passes and for some area
east of the Cascades. Moist onshore flow is expected to continue
late Saturday and Saturday night bringing additional chances for
showers. Showers may linger into Sunday. However confidence is
lower for this time period as model solutions vary on the timing
and track of additional disturbances moving into the region.

Sunday night into Monday, a brief break in the active pattern is
possible as models show a weak ridge building into the area.
However, another upper low and surface frontal system are forecast
to develop off the California and southern Oregon coast. This
next system may affect the region by next Tuesday. Models continue
to vary on the timing and track of this system as it moves
inland. There is a range of model solutions from the low tracking
inland over south or central California or further north over
southern Oregon and northern California. The more southerly track
would keep moderate precipitation south of the area with numerous
showers over Southern Oregon and Northern California on Tuesday. A
more northernly track would bring light to moderate precipitation
to southern Oregon and northern California though along with some
gusty winds possible. Have kept a blend of the models in the
forecast. Given the lower confidence in the storm track will need
to monitor this forecast with future model runs. -CC
