Updated AVIATION and MARINE Sections

.DISCUSSION...Winter storm impacts are being felt across much of
the forecast area this evening. Our main change this evening was to
upgrade the Winter Weather Advisory for the Illinois Valley to a
Warning. Deep west to southwest flow and very unstable conditions
are funneling showers into the Southern Oregon coast and inland,
to the Illinois Valley. We've received a report of 5 inches new
snow at Hayes Hill since this afternoon, and we expect plenty
more (12 to 18 inches likely at Hayes Hill) in portions of the
Illinois Valley through Saturday as a low pressure center moves
towards the coast Friday and keeps snow showers going there. Snow
levels will be at or below the current snow levels through
Saturday. This means places like Hayes Hill and Obrien will
continue to see moderate to heavy snow, while Cave Junction will
see snow tonight but maybe a mix of rain and snow Friday. Further
northward toward Sexton Pass on Interstate 5 and Camas Mountain on
Highway 42, we expect less overall precipitation but still
significant snow impacts. We'll be investigating this evening to
upgrade those areas to a Warning.

Another focus area is Mount Shasta City, and they have recorded
impressive snowfall the past 24 hours, but conditions should
generally improve after this evening as flow turns westerly and less
favorable for significant snowfall.

Elsewhere, the forecast is on track, with West Side Valleys expecting
some additional snow showers tonight, and with temperatures
cooling to near freezing, there will be some slippery roads in the
morning. Thus, the Winter Weather Advisory seems reasonable. It's
noteworthy that snow impacts Friday will be very limited east of
a line from Hayes Hill to Sexton Pass and west of the Cascades, so
we may will be noting that in the Winter Weather Advisory text.

Last but not least, moderate to heavy snow will impact portions of
the East Side through tonight, and there will be blowing and drifting
snow with very low visibility. Winter headlines cover the
expected snow impacts there.

.AVIATION...02/06Z TAF CYCLE...Overall, expect a mix of VFR and
MVFR ceilings overnight through Friday as one disturbance exits to
the east and another moves onshore. Showers will be most numerous
along the coast and into the coast ranges. Terrain will occasionally
be obscured and conditions may lower to IFR at times in heavier
showers. Low-level wind shear is possible at KOTH/KRBG overnight and
Friday morning.

Gusty south to southeast winds peaking at 20-30 kt are expected for
most TAF sites Friday afternoon. Shasta Valley and east side areas
likely have the strongest wind gusts of 35-40 kt.

Another period of steady upslope snow will develop Friday in the
Mount Shasta region, especially in the afternoon and evening, so
ceilings will likely lower to IFR there once again. -Spilde

.MARINE...Updated 830 PM PST Thursday 01 Mar 2018...High and steep
northwest swell will move into the waters late tonight, peaking
Friday morning at 18 to 20 feet. A low will move into the waters
late tonight, and this will bring another round of gale force winds
and hazardous seas Friday.

Winds will diminish Friday evening and seas will gradually subside
Saturday and Sunday, but the weakened low will linger, so it will
remain cold and unsettled with showers. Winds and seas will be
relatively calm Monday through Tuesday night with light winds and
seas at or below 9 feet. The next front will move in next Wednesday

DISCUSSION...

Short Term...Tonight through Sunday Night...After a brief break
in the action this morning and afternoon, the next wave of
moisture and cold air is now making its way across the area. The
latest model runs have upped the winds across the East Side, and
also increased the amount of moisture flowing into the system.
Also concerning, the band of precipitation is expected to slow as
it crosses the Cascades and the East Side. Have bumped up the
snow amounts and upgraded the Winter Weather Advisory to a Warning
for portions of Klamath, Lake, and Modoc Counties. Major impact
will be not just snowfall, but blowing and drifting snow that may
produce whiteout conditions at times.

Meanwhile, the previously issued headlines remain in place, with
snow already falling to the valley floors of the Illinois Valley
and covering the roads of the Interstate 5 passes. Mount Shasta
City remain under a good upslope pattern as well, and snow
continue to fall there. The snow will increase in coverage as the
evening proceeds, with snow levels dropping to well below valley
floors by tonight. Once the band exits to the east, showers will
continue through the night and into Friday morning. Then the next
wave is expected to pass through the area as the vertically
stacked surface low and upper trough move on shore somewhere near
or north of Cape Blanco. This will be another major wind and
precipitation producer, and with cold air already here, snow
levels will remain low. All winter headlines will continue into
Saturday morning. For more details on amounts and timing, see the

The trough will meander overhead into Saturday night, finally
slipping off to the east by Sunday. Showers will continue during
this time, and snow levels will gradually rise and precipitation
will lighten over the course of the weekend. Showers should come
to an end by Sunday evening, with high pressure building in for
the first time in several days, and temperatures finally starting
to rise. -BPN

LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday night...Conditions begin to dry
out with partly cloudy skies expected on Monday. High temperatures
will rebound into the upper 40s to low 50s for many of the west side
valleys and into the 30s east of the Cascades. Lows, will start off
similar to what they were on Saturday night and slowly increase each
subsequent night...becoming near normal or slightly above normal by
the end of the forecast period.

The next system is now poised to arrive on the west coast around
Wednesday and Thursday. Snow levels will be around 4000 to 5000
feet, and it could bring some moderate precipitation to the area.
That being said, the GFS is the more progressive and stronger system
versus the ECMWF which is slower and allows the precipitation to
largely dissipate before reaching the coast. Overall, this system
could be a weak to moderate atmospheric river-type system that could
provide moderate to heavy precipitation to Curry County and portions
of western Siskiyou County. This forecast favors the GFS as ensemble
solutions tend to show a similar solution, but did add a little bit
of the ECMWF into the mix as solutions this far out tend to be
