.DISCUSSION...The heaviest precipitation this morning is centered
over northern California. In fact the heaviest rain is just south
of our forecast area. This will remain the case for the rest of
today. Therefore some detail was added to the pop and QPF amounts
to reflect this thinking. Elsewhere rain will be light most of
time.
The highest rainfall totals in the past 24 hours were focused
mainly in northern California, southwest Oregon, including
Brookings and Red Mound and the coastal mountains. Elsewhere
rainfall amounts were less.
The main concern will be later tonight through Saturday
afternoon. The models are in pretty good agreement showing a low
moving inside of 130 W early Saturday morning. The low should
bottom out early Saturday morning, then will slowly fill in and
weaken during the day Saturday. The main impact will be strong
winds at the coast, and higher terrain east of the Cascades. Gusty
winds are also expected in the Shasta Valley, south end of the
Rogue Valley near Ashland and portions of the eastside. Details on

.AVIATION...06/12Z TAF CYCLE...Expect periods of rain with
MVFR/localized IFR and widespread terrain obscuration through
tonight. Rain may become showery at times, but precipitation will
continue into Friday. Most areas of reduced flight conditions will
improve after daybreak, but winds will increase and rain will
continue through the TAF period. Very gusty winds and heavier rain,
along with worsening flight conditions, will arrive by Friday
evening. LLWS will be a concern this evening at KOTH, KRBG,
and KMFR.

.MARINE...Updated 200 AM Friday 6 April 2018...An active pattern
will continue with multiple fronts, some of which will be strong,
moving through the waters through at least the middle of next
week. The current round of hazardous conditions is waning this
morning.
A stronger front will move through late Friday into Saturday.
Widespread high-end gales are expected as a deepening surface low
moves inside of 130W. Models are now showing a secondary low
developing along this low as it fills and this is a scenario tends
to create another burst of strong winds within the vicinity of the
low. Because of this development, there may be a period of storm
force winds possible across the northern waters as this system
skirts by. A Gale Warning is already in effect with a Storm Watch
over the northern waters. The best possibility for storm force winds
is Saturday morning, but gales are expected late Friday night
through Saturday evening.
In addition to the strong winds, dangerous seas will build this
afternoon into Saturday. Moderate west-southwest swell will combine
with chaotic wind-driven seas to create total seas of up to 22 to 26
feet at 12 to 13 seconds. This will create dangerous conditions for
bar crossings. Conditions will gradually calm Sunday into Monday as
high pressure briefly builds in. More fronts will follow
though, with one moving onshore Tuesday followed by another
Wednesday.

start the Wind Advisory in the southern Shasta Valley this
afternoon (3 hours sooner), add much of the area east of the
Cascades that was not already covered by a Wind Advisory or High
Wind Warning into the Wind Advisory for Saturday through Saturday
night. Also, high temperatures on Monday were increased, and
the probability of precipitation on Monday night was lowered to
reflect a slower arrival of the first front in a new series of
disturbances.
Today, a warm front will continue sending the heaviest
precipitation into the portion of Northern California that is
south of Siskiyou and Modoc Counties. There will be periods of
mainly light rain in the area today with lightest amounts in areas
affected by southeast downslope winds...including much of the
Shasta and Rogue Valleys. Besides those areas, south to southeast
winds today will also be strong and gusty at the coast, over the
higher terrain, and east of the Cascades. The strength of the warm
front is shown in that snow levels will be at a peak of around
11000 feet early this evening, A strong cold front will follow
late tonight with a relatively brief 3 to 6 hour period of
moderate to heavy precipitation. This short duration of the
highest rain rates will likely limit the impact.
Behind the front, winds will veer to southwest but remain strong
Saturday through Saturday evening. A strong, cold low will be
deepening offshore into early Saturday morning. It will then
slowly weaken and move north to northeast toward Vancouver Island.
Besides continuing gusty winds, it will also continue widespread
showers and snow showers with snow levels falling to around 4500
to 5500 feet for Saturday afternoon and night. Snow amounts will
be highest in the southern Oregon Cascades north of Lake of the
Woods (including Diamond Lake and Crater Lake), and on Mount
Shasta with around 5 to 10 inches expected in the 24 hours from
Saturday morning into Sunday morning. The majority of showers and
snow showers will taper off around sunrise on Sunday with activity
lingering longest from Douglas County northward. Clouds will
diminish on Sunday with the start of what will be a brief but very
strong warming trend. High pressure on Monday will produce inland
high temperatures in the ballpark of a dozen degrees above
normal.
A new series of disturbances is expected Tuesday into the weekend.
Snow levels are forecast to fall to 5000 to 6500 feet Tuesday
night with some light snowfall amounts expected in the mountains.
The next weather system rides in on the heels of the first during
the day on Wednesday, which means that snow levels will remain in
the 5000 to 6000 foot range Wednesday before falling to near 3500
feet Wednesday night into Thursday. Snow showers are expected to
continue into Thursday with these lower snow levels and are then
likely to continue into the weekend. We will have some gusty
winds with these fronts and some appreciable rains, but nothing
beyond advisory level winds are currently expected over inland
areas. Gales appear likely in the marine waters for Wednesday.
