.DISCUSSION...No major updates were needed this evening as
the going forecast looks largely on track. A cold front is
currently making it's way through the forecast area. Area
webcams are showing snow levels between 5000 and 6000 ft as the
main frontal band moves through, but snow levels lower behind the
front down to around 3500 feet. By then though, the bulk of the
precipitation will be done so we're only expecting the greatest
snow accumulations to be above 5500 feet tonight with wintry
travel impacts limited to the Cascade passes. In addition to the
rain and snow, strong gusty winds will continue overnight for some
of the higher elevations east of the Cascades. Summer Lake RAWS
gusted to 57 mph in the last hour and this will make for difficult
driving conditions if traveling along portions of highways 140,
31, 299, and 395. For more details, please see NPWMFR.
Winds will diminish by early Wednesday morning and lingering
showers will come to an end by late Wednesday morning. The
atmosphere should remain unstable enough to prevent widespread fog
in the west side valleys tonight. Conditions will stabilize,
however, late Wednesday morning as upper level ridging nudges into
the forecast area. As the day progresses Wednesday, the
atmosphere will dry and skies will clear, likely leading to fog
for the west side valleys Wednesday into Thursday morning. For

.AVIATION...For the 12/00Z TAFs...Mostly VFR conditions prevail
across the area with local ares of MVFR/IFR in light rain ahead of
the main front, which is moving onshore now. Conditions will
gradually lower as the front moves inland from northwest to
southeast, with mostly IFR conditions expected with frontal passage.
The other concern this evening is LLWS for most sites west of the
Cascades as the front moves through. Winds aloft no longer look as
strong for LLWS to be a concern east of the Cascades, but it will
still be gusty at the surface late this evening and overnight. Once
the front passes, there will be plenty of low level moisture to
result in reduced visibility and ceilings late tonight. However,
conditions are expected to remain unsettled enough to prevent fog
formation tonight. /BR-y

.MARINE...Updated 900 PM PST Tuesday 11 December 2018...An active
weather pattern through this weekend will maintain elevated seas
with periods of strong gusty winds as several progressively stronger
fronts move across the waters. Winds have diminished and turned
northwest after the first front, but will remain gusty through
tonight. Very steep and hazardous wind driven seas will continue
through tonight. Then seas will build again and transition back to
northwest swell dominated by early Wednesday morning.
More fronts will follow this week and into the weekend with the next
front expected Thursday night into Friday. This will bring another
round of gusty south winds. Models still differ on strength and
timing of this front, but it does look stronger than today's front
and gales will be possible. Another stronger front is expected
Saturday night into Sunday.
Additionally, more long-period heavy swell trains are expected to
impact the coastal waters through the week and into the weekend.
These swells are likely to produce very dangerous bar conditions,
and will pose a risk to fishing apparatus and exposed
infrastructure. The next heavy swell will move into the waters
tonight, followed by another heavy swell train Thursday night into
Friday. There looks to be a brief break in the weather Saturday,
with relatively lower seas (12 to 15 ft). However, guidance
continues to indicate another very heavy and very high (highest so
far this season) swell train moving in Sunday into Monday. /BR-y

The northern hemispheric view shows a five wave pattern around
the globe, which usually means a progressive pattern. That is the
case this time.
Mostly cloudy skies prevail this morning across the Medford CWA.
There are scattered light showers inland, but the heaviest
precipitation is over the coast and Umpqua Basin, where a front is
now moving onshore. There is lots of stratus and some fog/freezing
fog as well, especially east of the Cascades.
The front will bring gusty winds to the east side into Wednesday.
The winds will peak tonight, and a Wind Advisory is in effect for
portions of the east side.
The short wave aloft and the associated surface front will clear
to the east of the area late tonight, and post-frontal showers
will end early Wednesday as a long wave ridge moves into the area.
The remainder of Wednesday and Thursday will be dry with colder
mornings and warmer afternoons.
Another front will move onshore Friday. The NAM, GFS, and EC are
now all similar on the timing, but differ significantly with the
strength of the front. All show gale force winds ahead of the
front, but the NAM winds are near storm force. At this point, will
go with a model compromise, but will make winds a bit stronger
Friday morning over the marine waters and along the coast to
account for the slower and possibly stronger front.
From Friday on, the pattern will slow down a bit but still remain
progressive as a deep trough digs offshore between 130W and 140W
and a strong ridge develops ahead of it over the western U.S.
LONG TERM...Saturday, Dec 15th through Tuesday night, Dec 19th...
At the beginning of this time period a strong trough will be
deepening in the Gulf of Alaska. This is likely to bring strong
southerly winds in the coastal waters Saturday night as a cold front
approaches the coast. Snow levels are expected to increase into the
5500-6500 foot range due to the strong southerly flow. At this point
it appears the front will bring gales to the coastal waters and some
advisory level southerly winds across some of the forecast area.
Moderate to heavy precipitation is expected along and near the
Coastal Mountains and in Siskiyou County, with light to moderate
amounts elsewhere.
Monday into Tuesday the jet stream will then take aim on the mouth of
Columbia River, with ridging then amplifying along the West Coast.
More precipitation is expected across the area, though details
regarding how much comes inland how fast and how fast snow levels
rise is in question. At this point there is some concern that snow
levels could rise from 6500 feet to 8000 feet Tuesday into Tuesday
night. Thereafter, the GFS indicates the front weakening before it
comes in whereas the ECMWF pushes a strong front coming in with a
sharp drop in snow levels Thursday. BTL
