  evening with gusts to 55 kt possible late Friday night. 

* Seas...Mixed fresh swell with west swell combined to produce
  seas of 14 to 16 feet at 14 seconds through tonight. Seas will
  remain steep but gradually diminish to 11 to 12 feet Friday
  afternoon. Seas will build again becoming very steep and
  hazardous by late Friday night. 

* Areas affected...All areas will be affected by steep to very

* Seas...Very steep and wind driven at 12 to 16 feet, becoming 
  west 12 to 14 feet at 10 seconds Saturday afternoon through 
  Saturday night. 

* Areas affected...Gales will impact all areas through Saturday 
  morning. All areas will be affected by very steep and 
  hazardous seas through Saturday night.

.DISCUSSION...Impulses of energy, clearly noticeable on infrared
satellite imagery, are acting on an unstable air mass to bring
rounds of showers to the forecast area today and tonight. The
first main piece of energy is rotating through this morning and
has brought several inches of snow to much of the forecast area,
to elevations as low as 1500 feet. This energy is pushing
eastward, so in general, the intensity and coverage of showers
should diminish some (emphasis on some because we are still in an
unstable air mass) while snow levels rise a bit...with the
exception of areas west of Yreka and south of Grants Pass, that
are favored for continued significant shower activity in this
west-southwest flow pattern. Then, another impulse, over the
offshore waters at this moment, will push onshore around noon and
then inland through the afternoon. This will bring enhanced shower
activity and should bring snow levels down again, to around 1500
feet at times.

In addition to the winter hazard products we already have through
this evening (see WSWMFR), we've issued a Winter Weather Advisory
for the Yreka area. Another several inches is expected through
this evening, with that enhanced snow shower activity expected
this afternoon.

Showers diminish overnight and Friday will be much drier before
another system arrives Friday night. Please see the previous
discussion below for more details.

.AVIATION...25/12Z TAF CYCLE...Another strong front is moving
inland early this morning with a band of precipitation bringing a
chance for thunderstorm over the waters eastward to the coast range.
This will mainly produce a mix of VFR and MVFR conditions. Freezing
levels will be close to valley floors west of the Cascades and
there's a rain/snow mix expected at KMFR early this morning,
although very little, if any, accumulation is expected. There will
be another uptick in winds with this next front and low level wind
shear is expected for sites west of the Cascades through around 18Z.
Winds will be gusty again east of the Cascades through early this
afternoon. Behind the front, cold air aloft will continue convective
showers and snow showers this afternoon through early Friday morning
with conditions lowering to IFR at times in heavier showers. These
showers will be most numerous from the Cascades westward. /DW

.MARINE...Updated 345 AM PST Thursday 25 Jan 2018...A strong front
will move through the waters early this morning with gales and very
steep and hazardous seas. This front will also bring a slight chance
of thunderstorms through this afternoon. Winds will diminish this
afternoon but seas will remain high and very steep into Friday
morning. Conditions will very slightly improve on Friday with small
craft advisory conditions. Seas will be swell dominated Friday
morning but southerly winds increase again on Friday afternoon.
Another front Friday night into early Saturday morning will likely
bring another round of gales and possibly storm force winds. Seas
may become very high and will likely reach a peak on Saturday
morning.

Slow improvement will follow with hazardous seas possible
through Saturday then a dominant west swell will likely remain steep
Sunday through Monday. A relatively weak front will increase wind
waves late Monday. High pressure will build late Tuesday toward mid-
week with gusty north winds developing...strongest south of Cape
Blanco. -DW

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 409 AM PST Thu Jan 25 2018/

DISCUSSION...Radar returns early this morning show a line of
showers pushing across the West Side and just about reaching the
Cascades as of this writing. This line has produced snow on nearly
all of the West Side passes, and may even bring some snow down to
the higher valleys. This line, along with more showers behind it,
are expected to produce ongoing precipitation through at least
midday, along with some gusty winds in the usual locations as the
upper level trough slides by overhead. snow levels are expected to
drop to around 1500 feet, but snow may make it lower in the
heavier showers. Multiple winter weather and wind headlines
remain in effect, and details can be found at WSWMFR and NPWMFR.

Showers will continue through Thursday night and into Friday, but
the heaviest precipitation will have passed by evening. Showers
will never really come to an end before the next system arrives
Friday night into Saturday. A low will drift into the marine
waters Friday evening, pushing a warm front through the forecast
area and producing a substantial round of precipitation during
the day Saturday, along with some gusty south or southwest winds
in the usual areas of the coast, the Shasta Valley, and the East
Side. Expect a healthy amount of precip at the coast, though
nothing absurd for this time of year. Heaviest amounts are
forecast south of Cape Blanco. Brookings will probably get 2 to 3
inches in a 24 hour period, while Coos Bay will get closer to an
inch.

Warm air advection will cause rising snow levels throughout the day
Saturday. Expect snow levels around 2500 feet when precipitation
begins Friday night, rising to 6000 to 7000 feet by Saturday
night. Crater Lake will likely receive around a foot of snow
Friday night into Saturday evening, while Lake of the Woods could
see 6 inches, and Mount Shasta City and Klamath Falls around an
inch or two in that time frame. Travel impacts in the lower passes
should mostly end by Saturday afternoon, as snow levels rise. We
will continue to monitor this time period and refine details.

A ridge will build in Sunday, drying out conditions save for a few
lingering showers. The forecast gets more complex Monday as
another stream of moisture with subtropical origins will impact
the Pacific Northwest. Right now, it looks like most impacts will
be felt in northern Oregon and southern Washington, so kept PoPs
on the lower side, however if the track shifts south, there could
be river flooding concerns. In any case, a cold front will sweep
through the region Tuesday bringing a quick shot of precipitation.
Wednesday onward, models lean towards general ridging and dryer
than normal weather.
