.DISCUSSION...We've lowered high temperatures for the Roseburg
area based on morning fog and high clouds that should delay any
clearing of low clouds, keeping that area colder than guidance.
Increasing high clouds are being observed moving west to east
across the forecast area. These are signaling the approach of a
front, due to bring light to moderate precipitation to portions of
the forecast area tonight into Saturday morning. We expect minor
impacts with this front, with a few inches of snow in the Cascades
above 5000 feet.

The more significant storm comes late Sunday and will bring snow to
mountain passes above 4000 feet. We'll be honing in on specific
expected travel impacts during today's forecast.

.AVIATION...For the 07/12 TAFs...Fog/freezing fog with LIFR/IFR
cigs/vis will persist in the Umpqua Basin and south of the Umpqua
Divide in the Illinois Valley and lower Rogue Valley near Grants
Pass through this morning. At KMFR, expect LIFR/IFR to develop
around sunrise and persist through the morning, however there's a
chance that low level moisture won't be strong/deep enough so
IFR/LIFR conditions may be brief. An approaching trough will help
mixing with fog clearing to VFR in the late morning. However in the
Umpqua some low clouds/fog may linger through the day.  Along the
coast, offshore winds and incoming high clouds should maintain VFR
with only local IFR conditions this morning in patchy fog. East of
the Cascades surface conditions are moisture than past nights, so
local IFR/LIFR in fog is expected this morning, including at KLMT,
and areas of IFR/MVFR cigs in eastern Lake and eastern Modoc
counties. Most areas will see fog and low clouds clear late this
morning into the early afternoon, the main exception being KRBG.
This evening, precipitation will spread into areas from the coast to
the Cascades with areas of MVFR and local IFR cigs/vis. -CC

.MARINE...Updated 800 AM PST Friday 07 December 2018...South winds
will increase this afternoon as a front approaches the area. Expect
strong gusty south winds and steep to very steep seas to develop
over much of the waters this afternoon into this evening and
continue into Saturday morning. The combination of south wind waves
with the west swell will bring chaotic seas, mainly to the waters
beyond 5 nm from shore. A hazardous seas warning is in effect late
this afternoon through Saturday morning as a result.

A stronger cold front is expected to move into the waters late
Saturday through Sunday morning. This front may bring gales and very
steep seas to much of the waters. Behind the front Sunday evening
into Monday morning, a long period west swell will build into the
waters. Models have trended slightly lower this morning, now showing
around 12 to 13 feet at 16 seconds. Additional fronts are expected
Tuesday through late in the week. -CC/BPN

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 254 AM PST Fri Dec 7 2018/

DISCUSSION...Surface high pressure remains over northeast Oregon
and central Idaho, leading to east to southeasterly flow over the
area. This is bringing colder and drier conditions for the
forecast area. Fog continues in the Umpqua Basin where it never
really cleared out Thursday, and has already developing in the
Illinois Valley and the lower portion the Rogue Valley (Grants
Pass). Confidence is lower in the upper portion of the Rogue
Valley seeing fog, given the lower dewpoints and continued
southeasterly flow, however, left the patchy wording in the
forecast given the time of year. It'll be another cold morning,
especially east of the Cascades where below zero readings are
expected regardless of the current stratus over Lake county. Fog
and low clouds should clear for most areas by late this morning,
lingering a bit longer for the Umpqua Basin and Illinois Valley.

Most of today will be similar to yesterday, except we'll see
increasing cloud cover as the day progresses. The first in a series
of fronts will move through the area later this evening. Compared to
future expected fronts, this one will be relatively weak as it moves
into upper level ridging and washes out as it moves inland. Expect
rain to begin at the coast this evening, gradually moving inland
overnight. It won't be much of a precipitation producer, however,
with the best chances being west of the Cascades and the greatest
amounts expected along the coast, north of the Umpqua Divide, and
along the Cascades north of Lake of the Woods. Even then, we're only
expecting around a quarter of an inch along the coast, with
generally less than a tenth of an inch from the Cascades westward.

There'll be another quick break Saturday with upper level ridging
continuing through the area. Light showers may linger along the
coast through Saturday morning, but for the most part, the remainder
of the area will be dry. Even areas that have been socked in fog/low
clouds for the past few days may even see some sunshine Saturday.
Although it may be filtered through lingering cloud cover from the
previous front and approaching high level clouds ahead of the next
front.

The next system approaches the area late Saturday night into Sunday
morning. While this front will be stronger than the previous, it
will be a typical front for this time of year, bringing beneficial
rain and mountain snow, as well as some breezy conditions across the
forecast area Sunday. Rainfall amounts won't be excessive by any
means. We're only expecting an inch or two along the coast, 0.25" to
0.75" from the Cascades westward, and generally less than 0.25" east
of the Cascades. Snow levels will hover around 5,000 feet with the
majority of the precipitation, so we aren't expecting any winter
impacts to travel except in the usual Cascade passes during the day
Sunday. Behind the front, snow levels will lower to around 4000
feet, and with showers continuing, expect some light accumulations
east of the Cascades. Gusty winds are expected Sunday with this
front, and while it will be breezy along the coast, forecast
gradients don't support high wind criteria. We could see some
advisory wind speeds in the typical areas (Shasta Valley and
portions of the east side), but otherwise it should just be a breezy
day for the rest of the area.

Showers will continue into Monday, and another weak impulse will
move through, enhancing shower activity especially for the northern
portions of the forecast area. Showers taper off Monday evening and
we'll see a brief break in between systems Monday night into Tuesday
morning. The active pattern continues into the extended and the
previous extended discussion follows.

LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday...The extended forecast will
continue the wet pattern across the Pacific Northwest. Although
precipitation will not be continuous in the entirety of the
extended period, the overall pattern will be wet with breaks here
and there as each new front brings another wave of rain, snow and
winds. Regarding the winds, we anticipate the possibility for
breezy to gusty winds on Wednesday, particularly east of the
Cascades.

Snow levels will be between 4000 and 4500 feet areawide and will
further fall to about 3000 feet on Monday night before rising back
up to 4000 feet on Tuesday. A second front could cause snow levels
to drop to about 2500 feet Tuesday night as the precipitation
temporarily ends. Overall, impacts should still be relatively
minimal. Snow levels should rise back to 4000 feet or so afterward.

This could create periods of light to moderate snow, especially for
Mt. Shasta, Mt. Ashland, and the Cascades. Siskiyou Summit could see
some snow, but it is a bit too far out to determine just how much
they will see. Overall amounts of snow and rain should be typical
for this time of year, but it still may cause some travel delays.
Therefore, we recommend keeping an eye to the forecast in the coming
