.UPDATE...No major changes are necessary this evening, as the
forecast looks to be well on track. Smoke has spread from the
Klamathon Fire to the east and north today, covering much of
Klamath and Lake counties, as well and northeastern Siskiyou and
northwestern Modoc counties. As shown in current satellite
imagery, the smoke plume has made a sharp turn towards the south,
and smoke is likely to cover and fill the Shasta Valley late this
evening and tonight.
Otherwise, aside from breezy winds across the area and scattered
clouds over Coos and Douglas counties, there is little to mark the
passage of a weak and dry cold front. With the onshore push north
of Cape Blanco, expect low clouds to return there tonight. For
more information on the rest of the forecast, see the previous

.AVIATION...For the 10/00Z TAFs...High clouds continue to spill into
Coos and NW Douglas County. They should lift out of the area by 03Z.
Marine layer is expected to return to the coast late this evening
and again spreading into Roseburg after midnight.
VFR conditions will prevail across the remainder of the area
throughout the TAf period. The exception will be in the Shasta
Valley and surrounding areas where wildfire smoke will continue to
bring terrain obscurations and reductions in vsbys. Gusty winds will
continue until late this evening at Medford, the northern end of the
Shasta Valley and east of the Cascades. Winds will diminish shortly

.MARINE...Updated 800 PM PDT Monday 9 July 2018...Calm conditions
will persist through tonight. North winds will increase during the
day on Tuesday as a thermal trough develops along the Oregon coast
with small craft advisory winds and seas developing south of Cape
Blanco by Tuesday afternoon. The thermal trough will strengthen
Tuesday night into Thursday morning and winds and seas will increase
further. Small craft conditions will expand north of Cape Blanco,
and hazardous seas will be possible south of Cape Blanco by early
Wednesday morning. There's a chance winds could reach gales south of
Gold Beach and beyond 10 nm from shore. Confidence is no high enough
to go with a watch or warning at this point, but it is higher for
hazardous seas. A hazardous seas watch remains in affect from
Tuesday night through afternoon to cover this.
The thermal trough will begin to weaken Thursday and winds will
begin to diminish. Seas, however, will remain elevated through
Friday, possibly expanding north of Cape Blanco as well.

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 300 PM PDT Monday, 09 July 2018...
An upper level trough off the PacNW coast will move onshore late
this afternoon and tonight. As a result, mid-upper level southwest
flow is expected to increase across the area today. Satellite is
currently showing a pretty dry airmass over parts of Oregon and
northern California. This has dropped down RH's down below guidance
in some locations. Medford just recently hit 13% about 5% below
some of the guidance. Given the winds currently being observed and
the low RH's, we decided to go ahead with a no lead time red flag
for the Rogue Valley. It should also be noted that as of 2-3 pm, we
have probably hit our minimum RH values around Jackson and parts of
Josephine county as this dry airmass heads eastwards.
We also still have concerns about the Klamathon wildfire this
afternoon and evening. We are expecting an uptick in northwest
winds with gusts up to 30 mph as this trough and quasi dry cold
front moves through the area. RH values should be on the uptick
later on this evening once this front moves through. We won't be
issuing a Red Flag Warning in this location since the wind duration
criteria won't be met, but we'll be highlighting the stronger winds
in the Fire Weather Planning Forecast.

Tuesday into Wednesday, high pressure will strengthen offshore
and a thermal trough will develop in northern California. This will
bring a period of north to northeast winds and warm, dry weather
to the SW OR coast. Offshore (NE) winds will be strongest over the
Coast Ranges and the mountains of western Siskiyou County
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning (RH recoveries still mostly
good), then only moderate RH recovery is expected Wednesday night
into Thursday. Marine air will return to coastal areas Thursday into
the weekend.
The hottest weather of the season so far will impact inland areas
Wednesday through at least next Monday with west side valleys near
or above 100 degrees each day and east side areas near or above 90
degrees. The trend in the guidance has been to slow down the return
of moisture from the south late this week. We've removed any mention
of thunder from Thursday's forecast and it appears as if any
activity Friday through Monday will be isolated at best and confined
to northern California and the higher terrain of eastern
Klamath/Lake Counties. Confidence in the where/when for
thunderstorms is still low, so keep checking back for updates.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 601 PM PDT Mon Jul 9 2018/
DISCUSSION...An upper trough is moving into the PacNW bringing
gusty winds. The ASOS at the Medford airport has also recently
dropped to a humidity reading drier than expected, down to 13%.
This looks to have been pre-cursored in low level moisture
detection seen in the GOES-16 channel 7.34 micron product showing
low level water vapor dipping in a narrow dry slot in advance of
the trough. Latest RAP13 indicates this dry air slot will hang
over the Klamathon Fire during the late afternoon contributing to
near critical conditions there as winds increase. Very dry and
windy over the east side too through this evening before things
settle down.
Little in the way of significant weather over the next couple of
days with warm and conditions, and lesser winds inland from the
coast. Coastal areas will be seeing an increase in wind however as
the pressure gradient increased there with a strengthening
thermal trough.
Big story develops late in the week through the weekend with a
heatwave and thunderstorm chances. High temperature forecast
remains consistent with previous forecast with the hottest day
looking to be Thursday with areas in Jackson, Josephine, and
Siskiyou counties seeing readings of 102 to 106 degrees. 90s will
occur elsewhere inland with lower to middle 70s at the coast.
Temperatures should dip 2 or 3 degrees Friday and remain near that
level right through the weekend. These values are peaking at
levels considered to be dangerous and we anticipate an excessive
heat watch will be issued Tuesday with warnings and/or advisories
to follow by Wednesday. Those planning outdoor activities must
consider precautions to stay hydrated and cool.
Aside from the heat, a monsoonal surge of moisture will be
pushing northward Thursday night and moving into the region early
Friday. There looks to be instability developing an in areas from
Siskiyou and Jackson County and areas east are targeted for
thunderstorm activity Friday afternoon and evening. In the past
it's been observed that the 1st day of the moisture surge can be
associated with dry thunderstorms and this may be the case Friday.
Too soon to be drilling deep into details at this time but that
should be kept in mind.
Current forecast has a continued the threat for thunderstorms
confined to CA and the east side Sat-Mon. With some monsoon
moisture and hot summer temperatures, it's not uncommon to see
some severe impacts from thunderstorms either in the form of
heavy downpours and/or strong gusty winds. Stavish
