Area Forecast Discussion

322 AM EST Tue Jan 30 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper-level disturbance and potent cold front will pass
through this morning. Canadian high pressure will approach this
afternoon before building overhead tonight. High pressure will
move offshore Wednesday and a cold front will approach from the
north and west Thursday. The cold front will pass through
Thursday night into Friday before high pressure returns for
Saturday. Low pressure may impact the area early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A cold front over the Shenandoah Valley early this morning will
pass through the Washington and Baltimore Metropolitan areas
between 4 am and 7 am before clearing the Bay by 9 am. A period
of snow is expected along and ahead of the frontal passage. Snow
may mix with rain at the onset...especially near and east of
I-95 where temperatures remain in the mid to upper 30s across
most locations. Snow amounts will be light...ranging from
little or no accumulation up to one-half inch for most areas. A
few spots near the Mason- Dixon line could pick up close to an
inch where there may be a little more precipitation from the
upper-level disturbance. Recent warmer conditions suggest that
most of the snow may struggle to stick on paved surfaces.
However...some areas have radiated out ahead of this system...so
pavement temperatures are near freezing. Therefore...slippery
spots are possible during the morning commute. A Special Weather
Statement is in effect for commuters in the Washington and
Baltimore Metropolitan areas. A Winter Weather Advisory remains
in effect for locations along/west of the Allegheny Front where
upslope winds will add to snowfall totals.

Strong winds will develop behind the cold front...and that will
allow for blustery and cold conditions through this afternoon.
In fact...temperatures may not go up much from where they are
this morning despite increasing sunshine. Max temps are expected
to range from the teens and 20s in the mountains to the lower
and middle 30s near Washington and Baltimore...with perhaps
upper 30s in central Virginia. Strong cold advection...a deep
mixing layer and pressure rises close to 10 mb throughout the
day means that winds will be quite gusty. Latest guidance shows
around 35 to knots at the top of the mixing layer...so frequent
gusts around 35 to 45 mph are expected. Wind gusts around 50 mph
are expected for the ridge tops of the Allegheny Highlands and
Blue Ridge Mountains. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Blue
Ridge Mountains and the 50 mph gusts will be covered in the
Winter Weather Advisory for the Allegheny Highlands this
morning. Elsewhere...confidence is too low for a wind advisory
since wind direction at the top of the mixing layer is not
perfectly aligned with surface wind direction. However...it will
be close.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Canadian high pressure will build overhead tonight and winds
will gradually diminish. However...it will be quite cold with
low temps in the teens across most locations and single digits
along the ridges. Winds have a chance to decouple toward
morning...and with low dewpoints and mainly clear skies this may
cause temps to be even colder than forecasted for rural areas
and sheltered valleys.

High pressure will move offshore Wednesday and a southerly flow
will develop. A milder afternoon is expected after a very cold
start...but max temps will still be near and even slightly blow
climo. High pressure will remain offshore Wednesday a night and
southerly winds will allow for milder conditions compared to
Tuesday night.

A cold front will approach the area Thursday. Southerly winds
ahead of the cold front will allow for milder conditions
Thursday. Rain is likely with the frontal passage Thursday
night. Rain may change to snow before ending...but confidence is
low at this time. The potential for rain to change to snow will
depend on whether or not low pressure develops along the
boundary...causing precipitation to develop on the cold side of
the boundary.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A cold front will be exiting our region to the east Friday
morning with a slight chance of snow across the area as colder
air filters in behind the front. However, due to the quick
nature of the frontal passage, any accumulation is expected to
be light with snow ending by mid morning Friday for most.
Upslope snow showers will be ongoing through Friday afternoon
along and west of the Allegheny front. Cold and blustery
conditions expected Friday with highs ranging in the upper 20s
over our western zones and low to middle 30s elsewhere. Canadian
high pressure builds over the region Friday night and Saturday,
with continued below normal temperatures.

The next weather system approaches on Sunday and into Monday as
low pressure crosses the Great Lakes, remaining to our north,
and low pressure tracks along the Gulf Coast states before
moving up off the Carolina coast Sunday night and Monday. A
great deal of timing uncertainty exists between global models,
especially in regards to the low moving up the coast. GFS favors
a slower and colder solution, with precipitation continuing in
to Monday night, while the ECMWF is more progressive, keeping
heaviest precipitation east of our area and ending by Monday
morning. Will continue to monitor over the next few days in
hopes of better agreement. Temperatures Saturday night through
Sunday night will hover near normal for early February, with
below normal temperatures returning Monday in the wake of the
frontal passage.

.AVIATION /08Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A period of snow is expected through about 12z this morning. A
few flurries could hang on for a couple hours afterward across
the eastern terminals. Any snow amounts will be light and most
snow accumulation will be on grassy surfaces due to recent warm
conditions...but a few slippery spots cannot be ruled out. Vsbys
may briefly reach IFR levels with the band of snow early this
morning.

Strong northwest winds will develop behind the cold front by 12z
and gusts around 30 to 35 knots are expected throughout this
afternoon. Winds will gradually diminish tonight as high
pressure builds overhead before turning southerly Wednesday
behind the departing high. VFR conditions are expected later
today through Wednesday. A cold front will approach Thursday
before passing through Thursday night. Rain is likely with the
frontal passage. Rain could end as a period of snow...but
confidence is low at this time. SubVFR conditions are likely
Thursday night.

Sub-VFR conditions possible Friday morning as a cold front moves
across the terminals and exits to the east by midday, bringing the
chance for precipitation and reduced visiblities. Gusty northwest
winds will develop on Friday in the wake of the cold front. High
pressure builds over the region Friday night through Saturday with
lighter winds and VFR flying conditions. Precipitation nears the
terminals once again late Saturday night and continuing during the
day on Sunday, bringing the potential for MVFR/IFR VIS/CIGs. Light
southerly winds Saturday night will veer out of the west northwest
by Sunday evening, remaining light.

.MARINE...
A cold front will pass through the waters early this morning.
Strong northwest winds are expected behind the front. A Gale
Warning is in effect for the waters today. The Gale Warning
continues through this evening for the Maryland Chesapeake Bay
south of Sandy Point and the lower Tidal Potomac River. A Small
Craft Advisory is in effect for the rest of the waters this
evening. Winds will diminish overnight...but a Small Craft
Advisory remains in effect for the Bay and lower Tidal Potomac
River.

High pressure will move offshore Wednesday and a cold front will
approach Thursday before passing through Thursday night. A
Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed for portions of the
waters Wednesday night through Thursday night.

Small Craft Advisory conditions look likely on Friday as a cold
front passes over the waters Friday morning. High pressure of
Canadian origin will slide in the region Friday night through
Saturday, promoting lighter winds and sub SCA conditions.

Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and adjacent counties in
central Maryland and northern Virginia as well as the District of
Columbia.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A period of snow is expected early this morning for the Washington
and Baltimore Metropolitan areas. A Special Weather Statement has
been issued for the potential of slippery spots during the morning
commute.

A Gale Warning is in effect for the waters today. The Gale Warning
continues through this evening for the Maryland Chesapeake Bay
south of Sandy Point and the lower Tidal Potomac River.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for locations along and
west of the Allegheny Front until noon.

Elsewhere...a period of snow is expected early this morning and
light snowfall accumulations are likely across northern and
central Maryland...eastern West Virginia and northern Virginia.
Slippery spots are possible during the morning commute. A Special
Weather Statement has been issued for commuters in north-central
and northeastern Maryland.

Wind gusts around 50 mph are expected along the ridge tops of the
Allegheny Highlands and Blue Ridge Mountains. A Wind Advisory is
in effect for the Blue Ridge Mountains.

...Patchy Freezing Fog Overnight...

Patchy fog has developed across portions of central Virginia
overnight. Visibilities will be locally reduced to around one-
quarter mile at times through 2 am. Air temperatures near or
slightly below freezing combined with the fog may cause slippery
conditions on paved surfaces. If travelling overnight...be
cautious for slippery spots...slow down and use low beam
headlights. Fog should dissipate after 2 am as a cold front
approaches.

...HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS LIKELY FOR THIS MORNINGS COMMUTE...

A period of snow is expected this morning. Snow is most likely
between 3 am and 7 am this morning across north-central and
northeastern Maryland. Snowfall accumulations around a coating to
one-half inch are expected across most areas...but up to one inch
is possible along the Mason-Dixon Line.

Temperatures will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s during the
morning rush and this may cause snow to stick on paved
surfaces...resulting in slippery conditions. This could lead to
dangerous traveling conditions, multiple accidents, and extensive
delays.

If commuting early this morning, be aware of the possibility of
significant travel disruptions. Plan ahead by allowing for extra
travel time, and consider using public transportation and telework
options.
