Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lubbock TX 1240 PM CDT Tue Apr 10 2018 .AVIATION... VFR conditions with southerly winds of 10 to 15kts. Expect low- level wind shear to develop overnight at all terminals. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 438 AM CDT Tue Apr 10 2018/ DISCUSSION... Earth (Dust), Wind and Fire Weather will be the main concerns for this forecast package. Today will be relatively quiet day with near normal high temps and breezy south-southwesterly afternoon winds. Wednesday and Thursday, the upper level flow will become more zonal as a negatively tilted upper level trough approaches the West Coast. On Wednesday, in advance of the trough, low and mid-level southwesterly flow increases, a surface lee side low deepens, and surface gradients tighten. This will result in warm air being advected across the region and southwesterly winds increasing. Winds on Wednesday will stay just shy of advisory level but, conditions warrant a Fire Weather watch for now and could need to be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning in later packages. Thursday, as the upper trough passes through SOCAL the FA will start to feel the brunt of it. Gradients will tighten further and even warmer air will be advected across the FA. This will bring some of the warmest temperatures of the year so far to the area (90s to upper 90s across the entire region) and winds solidly in advisory territory in most of the FA with blowing dust. Fire Weather conditions will continue to worsen Thursday. A Fire Weather watch leading into a Red Flag warning is not out of the question for Thursday but have decided to wait on issuance for now as it is still a little far out in the forecast package to make that decision. Friday the trough develops into closed a low over the central USA. As the low pressure system translates eastward during the day Friday 500mb winds over the area will reach 90 to 100kts. This will result in the strongest winds of the week and blowing dust. NWP has come down slightly on winds because the H5 max will be positioned further east than originally anticipated. This keeps the CWA at the high end of advisory. Still, it's not terribly frequent that the wind max at 18Z is so far eastward and thus there is a risk that a slower progression will put West Texas in a more favorable wind zone. A high wind warning cannot be completely ruled out for Friday. Fire Weather conditions will be exacerbate Friday. Fire products will more than likely be warranted as we get closer. An associated dry and cool front will pass through the area Friday evening following the passage of the low pressure system. Thus, temperatures over the weekend will fall back into the 60s to 70s with calmer winds. Winds will stay slightly elevated Saturday as northwest flow returns through the start of next week. FIRE WEATHER... .A FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING FOR STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE SOUTH PLAINS, THE SOUTHERN TEXAS PANHANDLE AND MUCH OF THE ROLLING PLAINS... Fire weather concerns will be low today thanks to continued near normal temperatures and light winds. Elevated fire weather conditions will be present Wednesday as high temperatures warm into the upper 80s, winds increase to around 20 to 25 mph out of the southwest and RH values drop into the teens. Conditions on Wednesday warrant a Fire Weather watch for now and could need to be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning in the future. Thursday and Friday Fire Weather conditions will be exacerbate as an upper level trough move towards the region. Sustained W/SW winds near 30 mph with min RH values dropping into the low teens to single digits will be possible. Currently Friday appears the have the most critical conditions.
