Cold front extending from DEC southwest to SET and to AIZ will
continue moving southeastward, and will be south of our forecast
area by noon. Will see a small rise in temperatures mainly across
southeast MO and southwest IL this morning, then gradually falling
temperatures this afternoon due to strong low level cold air
advection as gusty north-northwest winds bring colder air into our
area. A band of light snow can be expected across northeast MO and
west central IL late this morning and this afternoon due to mid
level frontogenesis. Only a dusting of accumulation, one half inch
or less is forecast, mainly on elevated surfaces and grassy areas.
Light rain is expected across southeast MO and southwest IL early
this evening, changing to light snow as the freezing level lowers
late this evening as a northwest flow shortwave moves through the
region, while a surface low moves along the cold front well south of
the forecast area. Up to one half inch of snow accumulation is
forecast across southeast MO and southwest IL. Unseasonably cold
temperatures are expected tonight as a strong surface ridge builds
southeastward into our region from the northern Plains. A Freeze
Warning continues in effect for Reynolds, Iron, and Madison counties
of southeast MO where the growing season has begun. Lows tonight
will be around 20 degrees below normal for early April.

.LONG TERM... (Saturday through Thursday)

Northwest upper flow is expected to persist for much of this period,
well into the middle of next week. A series of upper level
disturbances will traverse thru this flow and affect the forecast
area in some form or another, but skill on track and QPF is low
beyond a couple days with these NW flow/clipper systems and
therefore have low PoPs beyond the first system, and there remain
some caveats with the first system given how it is set to affect our
region just beyond the 48-hour threshold.
Speaking of the first system, this is slated to affect our region on
Sunday and Sunday night. This system is currently well over the
Pacific Ocean and is not expected to make landfall for improved
sampling by the RAOB network on Saturday evening. Model guidance is
handling it as a fast moving open wave affecting a lower atmospheric
column that will largely be unusually cold but be on the backside of
a departing cold high pressure system with SE-S low level flow. The
timing and intensity of the pcpn it produces will be critical to
what type reaches the surface. On the one hand, a fast onset of
clouds and pcpn will limit any warmup and if any decent intensity of
pcpn can be attained, will further cool the column and result in a
mostly snow event, where snow accums of 1-3" will be possible. On
the other hand, a slower onset of pcpn with light intensity of pcpn
will likely result in a column that will be too warm for any snow
with maybe a dusting of snow possible in northern MO and central IL.
The forecast will reflect a solution more in the middle, with less
than an inch of snow expected most areas with temps peaking in the
upper 30s and low 40s most areas, with temps falling during the
afternoon as pcpn is anticipated to move in and cool the column from
evaporational cooling. Hopefully this comes into better focus over
the next 24-36 hours or so.
Additional clipper systems could affect our region late Monday into
Monday night and again on Tuesday night but skill is too low to go
with much more than CLIMO PoPs for this time of year, but additional
issues with pcpn-type could arise, especially if these systems
mainly impact at night, where temps will be colder anyway.
Temperatures will be below average for much of this period, with
something closer to average by the middle of next week as the
overall pattern looks set to change. Additional freezes look
probable thru early next week for areas where the growing season
has already started.
Models support a pattern shift by mid-late next week with an upper
RIDGE building in and strengthening southerly flow at the surface as
temperatures begin to return to more above average readings.

Cold front has made it as far south as CPS early this morning and
will continue shifting south of the taf sites with gusty north-
northwesterly surface winds today as a surface ridge builds into
the area behind the cold front. The cloud ceiling will lower today
as some light rain/snow moves into the UIN area early this
afternoon and eventually into the St Louis metro area by early
evening. It appears that the ceilings and visibilities will remain
VFR. The cloud ceilings will rise again by late tonight as the
precipitation shifts south of the taf sites.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: Cold front has made it as far south as CPS
early this morning and will continue shifting south of the STL
area with gusty north-northwesterly surface winds today as a
surface ridge builds into the area behind the cold front. The
cloud ceiling will lower today as some light rain/snow moves into
the STL area by early evening. It appears that the ceilings and
visibilities will remain VFR. The cloud ceilings will rise again
