.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tonight)

A low pressure system will continue lifting northeastward through MO
and into IA and WI today, dragging a cold front through the area.
Rain was occurring early this morning in the LSX CWA due to moisture
convergence along the frontal boundary. Additional large-scale lift
was being provided by the left exit region of a sharply curved H5
jet, but this support will diminish with time. Rain will continue
spreading from west to east today with the progression of the cold
front as the parent surface low lifts through the region. Once the
rain ends during the late afternoon and early evening hours, there
will be a brief period of quiet weather associated with shortwave
ridging aloft before the next PV anomaly begins to affect the region
tomorrow (see discussion below).

Highs today will be similar to or slightly warmer than yesterday.
Overnight lows will be around 10 degrees cooler than last night
within the post-frontal air mass. Air mass exchange will be the
primary reason for the lower temperatures tonight because at the
same time that cloud coverage will be decreasing in the wake of
today's departing low pressure system, cloud coverage will also be
increasing ahead of the next system. If sufficient clearing can
occur between the two low pressure systems, then radiational fog
would be expected to develop tonight.

.LONG TERM...  (Monday through Saturday)

There remains a good model consensus on maintaining a longwave upper
TROF over the central CONUS through the upcoming week and into next
weekend.  This pattern will result in continued unsettled weather
and precipitation chances, particularly with two storm systems
during this period.

The first storm system continues to look set for Monday and Monday
night, exiting on Tuesday.  The track of this storm system will be a
bit more to the south than the one affecting our area now, at least
how it pertains to the track of the triple point, not necessarily
the parent/occluding LOW. Broad-scale lift ahead of the
approaching upper level storm system really picks up by Monday
afternoon with most of the upper level support/deep lift exiting
to the east late Monday night. Deep lift peaks during Monday
evening over our region with the expected triple point at the
surface to follow a track just southeast of our forecast area
through southeast MO and into southern IL. This should keep the
surface based convection southeast of our region as well. There
isn't much CAPE to work with, but there will be plenty of dynamics
and shear, and sufficient low level moisture to result in a
severe thunderstorm threat nevertheless. The SPC Day 2 outlook
seems to have this handled well keeping the main severe threat
southeast of the forecast area, focused on very late Monday
afternoon into evening (4pm-10pm). For our forecast area, the
thunder threat will be mainly elevated and for mainly areas
southeast of STL metro.

The second storm system continues to look set for late week, with
its timeframe tightening up a little into Thursday and Thursday
night, with Friday looking more dry now.  The big change is most
model solutions have trended toward a weaker storm system once
again, which is what they were showing 2 days ago, with much lower
precipitation amounts as well.  This is overall a reflection of the
models not being sure how to handle the structure of the base of the
TROF, whether to broaden it or not specifically.  The overall trends
for a colder column of air for this precipitation to fall through
remains the same, but any snow potential at this point looks to be
confined to the normally colder times of day (Thursday morning and
possibly again Thursday night) and probably nothing more than very
light snow or flurries for limited areas.  Still, getting snow to
fall anywhere in the forecast area in the first half of November is
notable and this system will continue to be watched with interest.

Near seasonal levels of temperatures for early in the week are
expected to trend colder as the mean upper TROF axis position looks
to lean more eastward by late week allowing some colder air to work
its way in at the surface.  Those are the trends.  Taking a closer
look at the specifics, there looks to be some potential for the
period Thursday to Saturday looking downright chilly if the cold
Canadian air advertised by some models truly comes southward into
the Midwest with minimal modification, but given the uncertainty
aloft, the surface airmass could track differently and end up having
a lot less bite.  It simply adds to the uncertainty in handling the
precipitation-types with the Thursday storm system.

.AVIATION...  (For the 18z TAFs through 18z Monday Afternoon)

Low pressure over east central Iowa is pushing a cold front
through Missouri and into Illinois this afternoon. Areas of IFR
ceilings with some MVFR visibilities in showers will continue for
a few more hours this afternoon just ahead of and for about
90-100 miles behind the front as it pushes east. Ceilings will
improve through the late afternoon into the evening from southwest
to northeast, and I expect VFR conditions to prevail across the
entire forecast area by 04-06Z. Gusty south to southwest wind will
weaken this evening as the low over Iowa moves northeast away from
our region. The next chance for significant weather to impact
aviation will arrive very late in the forecast period as another
system impacts Missouri. Rain and possibly some thunderstorms
could be moving into central Missouri as early as 17-19Z.

SPECIFICS FOR KSTL:

A cold front just west of the terminal will move through between
19-20Z. Until then, intermittent showers will continue to impact
the terminal, and IFR ceilings continue to be likely. Should see
improving conditions after FROPA. Wind will diminish this evening
and expect MVFR ceilings to improve to VFR between 02-04Z. The
next round of precipitation is expected late in the TAF
period...though there are still timing differences in guidance.
Most likely time for rain will be after 21Z...and there could be
thunderstorms as well. Confidence in thunder is low however so I
did not mention it in the TAF.
