Area Forecast Discussion...Updated Aviation National Weather Service Saint Louis MO 703 AM CDT Mon Oct 8 2018 .SHORT TERM... (Through Late Tonight) Issued at 408 AM CDT Mon Oct 8 2018 Showers and thunderstorms have moved north of the area early this morning. This is in response the strongest low level moisture convergence lifting north of the area per the latest RAP. The RAP/GFS/NAM continues to show that upper pattern will become more amplified causing the upper flow to turn almost southerly across Missouri and Illinois later today. The best focus for shower and thunderstorm development today will stay north and west of the CWA. While the atmosphere will become moderately unstable this afternoon, it will also be weakly capped, so have gone mainly dry across the CWA today. By tonight, the GFS/NAM are showing some eastward movement of the upper trough which could bring some increase in ascent across parts of central and northeast Missouri. In addition, these models are showing some weak low level moisture convergence late tonight, so have continued a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms across these areas. There may still be some patchy fog early this morning, especially in low lying areas where the winds are light. GOES-16 imagery is showing mainly clear skies over the southeastern half of the CWA. This should be enough for some patchy fog to develop through sunrise. Highs today will again climb well above normal with expected highs in the 80s. This is because of the current warm temperatures and expected sun today. These temperatures will be close to the records for today (St. Louis 92...1980/1934, Columbia...90, Quincy...1939). Low tonight will be similar to this morning's temperatures. Britt .LONG TERM... (Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 408 AM CDT Mon Oct 8 2018 Scattered convection will shift eastward into much of the forecast area on Tuesday due to increasing low-mid level warm air advection ahead of an approaching deep upper level trough, as well as increasing low level moisture and instability. The models do have some timing differences with the cold front which will move east- southeastward through our forecast area mainly on Wednesday. The NAM model is the fastest with the front, while the operational GFS is the slowest. For now will follow more of a compromise solution of the two which is similar to the ECMWF model. The highest pops will occur late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as the upper level divergence ramps up just ahead of the upper level trough. There is the potential for severe storms Tuesday night, particularly across northeast and central MO as low-mid level wind shear increases with the approach of a mid level wind max just ahead of the upper level trough. The most likely convective mode will be a squall line just ahead of the approaching cold front which will move quickly eastward through our forecast area Tuesday night and likely weaken by early Wednesday morning with gradually waning instability. The precipitation will shift southeast of our forecast area Wednesday evening as a large and strong surface ridge builds southeastward into our forecast area from the northern Plains behind the cold front. This will bring much colder air into our area beginning Wednesday and Wednesday night. Will have temperatures around 10 degrees below normal by Thursday and Thursday night which will feel quite cold relative to the unseasonably warm conditions we have had for much of October so far. Another round of showers can be expected this weekend as an upper level trough deepens over the northern Plains sending another cold front southeastward through the region, while a surface low moves eastward through OK and AR. This precipitation will shift southeast of our forecast area Sunday night with another shot of cold air following it for the start of the next work week. At this time the GFS has a deeper upper level trough and hence a colder solution compared to the ECMWF model. GKS && .AVIATION... (For the 12z TAFs through 12z Tuesday Morning) Issued at 624 AM CDT Mon Oct 8 2018 Any remaining patchy fog will likely dissipate by 13Z. Otherwise expect dry and VFR conditions through at least 06Z.
