afternoon and continue to rise to near 25.9 feet by Saturday
morning. Additional rises are possible thereafter.
* Impact: At 24.5 feet...Extensive left bank agricultural flooding
develops upstream of the gage. A utility road is flooded along the
Old Monroe levee along the left bank upstream of the gage.

Cold front has made it through MCI and IRK, but was still north of
UIN early this morning. Convection which was mainly post frontal
has also yet to make it into our forecast area yet. This front will
drop slowly southeastward through parts of our forecast area today
into this evening as the strong shortwave centered over MN moves
eastward through the northern portion of the Great Lakes region.
This cold front will make it down to UIN by 12Z, COU by 18Z, and STL
by 00Z Sunday. Although there may be isolated convection ahead of
this front, it appears that the better coverage will be along or
just behind the front where there will be better upper level
forcing. The operational GFS model has too much QPF in the warm
sector ahead of the front, and favored the slower southeastward
progress of the precipitation per the NAM, ECMWF, and HRRR models.
Unseasonably warm temperatures will continue across east central and
southeast MO and southwest IL today, with cooler conditions across
northeast into central MO and west central IL due to cold air
advection behind the cold front, plus cloud cover limiting solar
insolation along with cooling due to precipitation. Temperatures
late this morning and afternoon across this area may actually fall
slightly or become nearly steady. This front should begin to lift
back northward late tonight as the upper level flow begins to back
as an upper level trough deepens over the Rockys. The highest POPs
and QPF will be across northeast and central MO and west central IL
with less POPs and QPF across southeast MO and southwest IL. There
may be locally heavy rainfall with above normal values of
precipitable water. There may also be areas which get repeat
convection due to the slow movement of the front.

.LONG TERM... (Sunday through Friday)

The synoptic pattern at the start of the long term period will
feature an amplifying pattern aloft as a strong ridge builds across
the eastern CONUS with a trough digging into the West. This trough
will shift eastward across the region by the middle of next week,
finally bringing a shot of true fall weather to the region by the
end of next week.
Sunday will begin with a quasi-stationary surface front bisecting
the region from southwest to northeast. However, as the upper-level
ridge amplifies the surface front should lift back to the north
through the day on Sunday and into Sunday night, slowly shifting
precipitation chances back into central and northeast MO and into
western IL. Despite deep warm cloud depths and seasonably high PWAT
values (1.75"-2.00"), think the flood threat on Sunday will continue
to remain low due to a couple mitigating factors: 1) The dry
antecedent conditions, particularly across central MO where a
drought persists. 2) A general lack of deep moisture convergence and
large scale synoptic forcing passing along the frontal surface.
Monday into Monday night will feature mainly dry conditions across
the region as the front pushes further north into Iowa. With the
front pushing northward and mainly dry conditions expected, it will
once again be unseasonably warm on Monday as highs push into the
upper 80s.
The upper-level trough will begin to eject out into the
central/southern Plains on Tuesday. This will result in a deepening
lee cyclone which will push into the Upper Midwest by Wednesday
afternoon. Increasing moisture transport ahead of this system will
lead to increasing chances for showers/storms on Tuesday afternoon,
with the best coverage expected late Tuesday night into Wednesday as
the attendant surface cold front and large-scale lift associated
with the upper-level trough push through. This system will have
fairly strong deep-layer wind fields, but the current timing
suggests the thermodynamic environment will be generally
unfavorable. Therefore, at this time the severe threat with this
front looks fairly low, but if the timing of this system changes
then the severe threat may need to be re-examined.
Given the highly amplified pattern and the potential of a
landfalling tropical cyclone by the middle of next week, have
favored the slower solutions (Canadian/Euro) with the frontal
passage Thursday morning. Once the front does pass through, it will
bring much more fall-like conditions to the region Thursday and
especially into Friday. In fact, highs on Friday may struggle to
reach the lower 60s in some areas if current trends hold!

A cold front extending from just north of UIN to just south of
IRK and MCI will move slowly southeastward through the taf sites
today and this evening. This front will move through UIN around
12Z, COU around 18Z, and into the St Louis metro area around 00Z
Sunday. At least scattered showers and storms can be expected
along and just behind this front, with only isolated activity
just ahead of it. The cloud ceiling will drop after fropa, down
to as low as 600 feet initially in UIN early this morning, and
into the MVFR category in COU later this morning. The cloud
ceiling should rise into the MVFR category in UIN this afternoon,
but the cloud ceiling may drop into the IFR category both in UIN
and COU by late tonight. Although the prevailing cloud ceiling
will drop in the St Louis metro area this afternoon and tonight,
it may remain VFR. The wind will veer around to a north-northwest
direction after fropa in UIN just after 12Z, and in COU just
after 18Z. The southwesterly surface wind will become light and
variable in the St Louis metro area this evening as the front
becomes nearly stationary in this area.
SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: A cold front extending from just north of UIN
to just south of IRK and MCI will move slowly southeastward
and into STL around 00Z Sunday. At least scattered showers and
storms can be expected along and just behind this front, with only
isolated activity just ahead of it. There may be isolated
showers/storms in the STL area this morning, but the more likely
impacts from convection will occur late this afternoon and this
evening. Although the prevailing cloud ceiling will drop in STL
this afternoon and tonight, it may remain VFR. The southwesterly
surface wind will become light and variable this evening as the
front becomes nearly stationary in this area.
