.SYNOPSIS...24/652 PM.
A cold front and low pressure center is moving over the area now.
Expect light rain and mountain snow showers, especially on north-
facing slopes. Otherwise, the associated northerly winds, and cooler
temperatures will persist the remainder of the week. Elevated
surf will diminish during the day tomorrow.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...24/824 PM.
***UPDATE***
A quick moving storm system will move down the spine of the
California coast overnight reaching Southern California Christmas
morning, then towards Yuma AZ in the afternoon. There will be
little in the way of moisture to tap into with this system as
there is not a good over water trajectory as it approaches. Also,
850 mb winds (5,000 ft) will be out of the NW which is not
conducive for any significant rainfall totals South of Point
Conception. Regardless, rainfall totals will remain light with
less than a quarter inch across SLO County, and likely less than a
tenth of an inch elsewhere. However, with the cold core of the
upper low, there will be a slight chance for thunderstorms from
anywhere N of Point Conception and across the SBA/Ventura County
Mtns through this tonight.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Tuesday evening,
with 2-4 inches of snow expected above 5500 ft. Snow levels with
this system will lower to between 4000-5000 ft late tonight into
Christmas Day. The main impact will be the potential for icy
conditions with light snow accumulations and blowing snow across
the I-5 Corridor including the Tejon pass towards the Grapevine.
Also, the Eastern San Gabriel Mtns should see some snowfall
accumulations as well.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Santa Barbara County
Mountains and south Coast where gusts of 60 mph can be expected.
Strongest wind gusts so far have been in the lower 50s across
Refugio and in the hills above Montecito. As the cold air pushes
in behind the upper low later tonight into Christmas, winds
should continue to strengthen as the cold air aloft surfaces due
to subsidence behind the front. In fact many areas will be
affected by gusty NW to N winds overnight into Christmas Day. Wind
advisories for wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph will be issued
later this evening for the L.A. and Ventura Coasts, as well as
valleys, Santa Monica Mtns and Antelope Valley through early
Christmas Morning. However, the winds will then shift to the north
and once again bring gusty winds across the mountains, Santa
Clarita, San Fernando Valleys, and through the Santa Monica Range
into West L.A. during Christmas day. There will be some gusty NW
to N winds across SLO County but should remain below advisory
levels.
As far as temperatures go, high temps will be trending 3 to 8
degrees cooler across coast and Valleys, and 10 to 15 degrees
cooler across the mountains and Antelope Valley for Christmas Day.

Things gradually calm down and dry out on Wednesday with clearing
skies as weak height rises occur behind tomorrow's trough.
Although temperatures will warm up some from Tuesday, most areas
will remain below normal. Not much change in the flow pattern for
most of Thursday. Mountain north winds will gradually increase
later in the day in advance of another upper trough that's
forecast to move into the western Great Basin by Thursday night
and the resulting north flow on its back side.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...24/225 PM.
Dry conditions remain for the extended period through next Monday.
The upper level low that dives into the southwest U.S. on Thursday
slows down and closes off a bit to keep gusty northerly winds
through the mountains and canyons through Saturday, then a weak
ridge moves through to weaken those winds. Could be a weak Santa
Ana on Saturday that will bring a warming trend for the rest of
the extended. Some differences in the extended models by early
next week. The EC has a very broad upper trough over the west
while the GFS shows a variable NW upper flow with a sharper and
SW-NE elongated trough that moves into the area on Monday. Both
are dry solutions as far as forecast area is concerned. Leaning
towards the GFS solution at this time which would mean slightly
warmer temps than the EC.

.AVIATION...25/0621Z.
At 06Z at KLAX...there was no marine layer, but there was a moist
layer from the surface through 5000 ft.
Areas of cigs with mostly MVFR conds will affect the region
overnight thru mid morning. There will be local IFR conds,
especially in the foothills and mountains. Showers are likely
from KSBA northward through early Tue morning, with a chance of
showers elsewhere. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms north
of KSBA. Snow will affect mainly northern mountain slopes. Conds
will become VFR in most areas by mid to late morning Tue.
Gusty west to northwest winds will affect much of the region on
very late tonight into Tue. There may be some LLWS, especially
near KSBA, KVNY and KBUR Tue, with areas of moderate UDDF.
KLAX...Low to moderate confidence in the 06Z TAF. There is a
30-40% chance that MVFR cigs will scatter out as early as 14Z.
There is good confidence in gusty W to NW winds Tue. There is a
20% chance of northerly cross winds 10-15 knots between 03Z-09Z
Wed.
KBUR...Low to moderate confidence in the 06Z TAF. There is a 30-40%
chance that MVFR cigs will scatter out early as 14Z. There is
also good confidence in gusty NW winds Tue.

.MARINE...24/1027 PM.
For all the Outer Waters, high confidence in gale force winds
through at least late Tue night. Combined seas are forecast to
build up to 15 to 18 ft on Tuesday, and periods will be rather
short. There is a 50%-60% chance that SCA level winds and/or seas
will persist Wednesday through Friday.
For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, high confidence in gale
force winds through at least Tue afternoon, with a 30% chance that
gales will continue through at least Tue evening or night. There
is a 40% chance of SCA level winds Wed and Thu afternoon and evening.
For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, high confidence
in gale force winds through Tuesday evening. Very large, steep and
dangerous waves are expected thru Tue night. SCA level wind gusts
should prevail later Tuesday night after the gales subside.
Conditions should be below SCA levels on Wednesday through
Saturday, except for a 30%-40% chance of SCA level wind gusts
Thursday and Thursday night, especially for PZZ650.

.BEACHES...24/141 PM.
A northwest swell building into the northern coastal waters will
bring high surf to the Central Coast beaches through tonight
with surf 7 to 10 feet with max sets to 12 feet. Another large
west-northwest swell will move into the waters late tonight into
Tuesday night, bringing even larger surf to the Central Coast.
Surf of 9 to 12 feet with peak sets up to 14 feet can be expected
through Tuesday evening before slowly subsiding through
Wednesday morning.
This swell will bring high surf conditions to beaches south of
Point Conception as well starting early Tuesday and continuing
through Wednesday morning. Surf of 5 to 8 feet with sets to 10
feet is expected on west-facing beaches, mainly in L.A. and
Ventura Counties. Along the Santa Barbara County south coast,
local sets up to 6 feet are expected. Strong rip currents are
expected on all beaches, with a risk of sneaker waves and beach
erosion.
High tides are expected during the late morning on Tuesday. The
combination of high tides and large waves will bring a risk of
minor to moderate coastal flooding during the time of peak surf.

There is the potential for strong and damaging northerly winds on
Christmas Day across portions of Southwest California, especially
