.SYNOPSIS...10/927 AM.
Santa Ana winds will steadily decrease this morning, then
transition to onshore flow this afternoon and evening. Another
round of Santa Ana winds will bring warm and very dry conditions
Sunday morning through Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...10/201 PM.
Today is the lull between the Santa Ana event that started last
Thursday and another one that will begin tomorrow. The winds have
turned onshore today which has increased relative humidity, but
is also keeping the smoke from the fires overhead. Temperatures
are up in the sunshine and get to normal values in the interior
while the coasts and valleys will be several degrees above
seasonal in the mid 70s to low 80s. Another cold night in interior
SLO and the Antelope Valley is expected. The increasing onshore
winds pushed smoke from the Woolsey and Hill Fires into portions
of L.A and Ventura Counties. These winds will be short-lived, as
another round of Santa Ana winds are expected to develop Sunday
morning, and strengthen through the morning hours. Marine layer Low
clouds and stratus will not be an issue for the week.
Another shortwave upper-level disturbance is expected to drop
into Nevada/AZ/NM on Sunday. The cold air behind the front will
allow for a strong surface high to build in across the Great
Basin, causing a tightening offshore gradient across the region.
Cold air advection will help drive the Santa Ana winds initially
Sunday morning. The LAX-DAG offshore gradient will not be as
impressive as we saw the last few days, but the 24 hour trend from
onshore to offshore flow will be enough to drive the winds. This
should be a moderately strong event with some marginal upper level
support Sunday. There will be the potential for local gusts
around 60 mph in the mountains Sunday.
Will be issuing High Wind products for the L.A. and Ventura
County Mountains and advisories for the usual L.A./Ventura County
wind prone coast/valleys on Sunday. High temps will actually
moderate cooler from the cooler air source in the desert, yet be
warmest along the coast Sunday in the upper 70s to around 80,
while inland areas remain in the lower to mid 70s. 60s across the
Antelope Valley.
High temps should climb a few more degrees on Monday. Winds
should be a bit weaker on Monday as we lose some upper level
support.
Offshore flow continues into Tuesday with even colder conditions
across the high desert. This should allow for a bump-up with
stronger gusts Tuesday morning across the usual wind prone Santa
Ana wind locations. The upper ridge overhead will help to keep
high temps across the coast and coastal valleys for LA/VTU
Counties in the lower to mid 80s. Cooler inland. Still very dry
with daytime temps well above normal. Cold overnight lows still in
wind protected locations.
.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...10/209 PM.
Offshore flow will weaken on Wednesday effectively ending the
Santa Ana event, but will remain weakly offshore through Friday.
They models are in general agreement on the upper level trough
over the great basin moving further to the east and California to
be under a very broad area of higher pressure until Saturday when
an upper level trough approaches Northern California from the
Pacific Northwest. As the offshore winds lessen by the weekend
there could be a slow return of marine low clouds and stratus.

For the outer waters, there is moderate to high confidence in the
current forecast. Winds and seas are expected to be below Small
Craft Advisory (SCA) levels through Thursday, except for a 50%-60%
chance of NE to E SCA level winds for southern portions Sunday
afternoon and evening, and a 40% chance of these conditions in
this area Monday night into Tuesday.
For the inner waters N of Point Conception, there is generally
high confidence in the current forecast with winds and seas
expected to remain below SCA levels through Thursday.
For the inner water S of Point Conception, there is generally
high confidence in the current forecast with winds and seas
expected to remain below SCA levels through Thursday, except for
a 50%-60% chance of SCA level NE winds Sunday afternoon mainly
near shore from Rincon to Malibu. There will also be a 30% chance
of SCA level wind gusts S of the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Santa
Catalina Island Sunday afternoon which may impact Avalon Harbor
with short period NE swell and gusty winds. There will also be a
20%-30% chance of these conditions again on Tuesday.

Santa Ana conditions have taken a one day break today with
southwesterly winds developing from the coast through inland
areas. Relative humidities have been slow to increase in this
southwest flow due to the abundance of dry area across the area
this morning, but in general humidities will increase most along
immediate coastal areas and less so inland. The inland valleys may
not see much of an increase in humidity. Southwest winds will
generally be 5-15 with localized gusts to 25 mph.
Santa Ana conditions will return tomorrow morning across much of
Los Angeles and Ventura Counties with northeast winds kicking in
around 4 am mountains and inland areas then by around 6 am in the
coasts and nearby valleys. Northeast winds will increase in the
mountains to 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph and localized gusts
to 60 mph in wind prone passes and canyons. For the valleys and
coastal areas, winds of 15-30 mph and gusts to 45 are likely with
some localized gusts to 55 mph possible. Conditions become more
favorable for strong winds as Sunday morning progresses and into
Sunday afternoon. It's likely that the period from about 10 am
through 4 pm Sunday will have the most intense period for winds
and very low relative humidities for this event.
Winds Sunday night through Tuesday morning will exhibit the usual
increase after sunrise into early afternoon before some tapering
off in the evenings until just before sunrise. The latest NAM
model has a LAX-DAG pressure gradient of -8.3 on Tuesday morning,
which is the strongest pressure gradient of this round of Santa
Anas. Thus it's possible there could be a final push of strong
winds on Tuesday morning. Winds will weak through the day on
Tuesday to bring an expected end to critical fire weather
conditions by late Tuesday afternoon when the red flag warning is
expected to expire at 5 pm. Overall the confidence in timing for
this event is high, with moderate-high confidence on wind speeds,
and high confidence on relative humidity forecasts.
Relative humidities will be very low through this Santa Ana event
with widespread single digit readings and very poor overnight
recoveries. Dry air will remain in place through next week and not
see any noticeable increases until next weekend.
Santa Barbara and SLO counties will see elevated fire weather
conditions through the remainder of the weekend and next week with
general offshore flow and areas of gusty east and southeast winds
likely.
