Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
352 PM PDT Thu Jul 5 2018
.SYNOPSIS...05/245 PM.
A high will bring a heat wave, offshore winds and fair skies into
the weekend. Next week, the high will move East for partly cloudy
skies and a cooling trend.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...05/154 PM.
Heat wave has begun, at least for inland areas today as strong
high pressure builds from the east and gradients start turning
offshore. Gradients are trending that direction and will continue
to do so through tonight and into Friday before trends reverse on
Saturday. Noticed a rare 40C contour at 950mb reaching the coastal
valleys south of Pt Conception Friday and combined with offshore
gradients to the north and east those are the two major
contributing factors that will push temps to record levels
tomorrow. For this reason highs have been nudged upwards again a
couple more degrees, especially for coastal areas where it's clear
now that the offshore component will easily push any maritime
influence well away from the beaches and allow that compressional
heating to reach the coast. Valleys still expected to reach 110 in
the warmer locations with highs up to 114 in the western San
Fernando Valley.
Overnight lows are also expected to warm up quite a bit starting
as early as tonight and even more so Friday night with a stronger
northerly push. Areas like southern SB County could really stay
hot overnight with the north winds kicking in, possibly advisory
level, along with a very warm air mass in place. A little tricky
right at the coast where the bulk of the population is but
certainly foothills and through the canyons and passes lows could
easily remain in the 80s overnight.
The Excessive Heat Watch has been converted to a warning with high
confidence for Friday certainly. Saturday is interesting for
coastal areas south of Pt Conception because models have been
showing the last couple days a return of southerly flow with a
weak eddy circulation developing. 950mb temps drop to around 30C
which is still very warm for the coast and temps will be off to a
very fast start Saturday given the warm morning lows but an
earlier sea breeze will likely put a cap on the heating at lower
levels than Friday. Temps could drop a good 10 degrees at the
coast Saturday but that still puts highs in the 90s for coastal
areas where air conditioning is not as prevalent. North of Pt
Conception, especially inland, temps Saturday are expected to be a
few degrees warmer.
Another hot day on tap Sunday though gradients will be trending
strongly onshore both north/south and east/west. So while the air
mass overall will still be very warm the earlier sea breeze will
bring some relief even to inland areas. With highs still in the
80s and 90s for the coast and lower 100s for the valleys along
with very warm nighttime temperatures it's likely at least heat
advisories will be needed.
As far as the convective potential goes, extreme eastern LA County
continues to be right on the edge of the monsoon push on Saturday,
at least on the GFS. The other models are farther east with the
moisture but for now will leave in a small threat of afternoon
thunderstorms there. Probably more of a gusty wind/dry lightning
risk than heavy rain.
.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...05/149 PM.
High pressure does weaken slightly Monday in response to a trough
moving into the Pac NW. Onshore gradients will continue
increasing which will continue the cooling trend Monday but highs
will still be 4-8 degrees above normal in most areas. Most valleys
(except SLO interior) will be under 100 Monday while most coastal
areas will be below 90. Still a potential for heat advisories in
SLO interior but most other areas should be below advisory levels.
A few more degrees of cooling expected Tuesday before temps level
off through mid week at levels that are still above normal in most
areas. Eastern LA County remains on the very western edge of the
monsoon moisture, again better on the GFS than the other models,
but for now will keep the convection-free.

.AVIATION...05/1459Z.
At 1500Z, the marine inversion at KLAX was based at 700 feet. The
top of the inversion was 3700 feet with a temperature of
22 degrees Celsius.
Overall, high confidence in 18Z TAF package. Current IFR
conditions will dissipate by the afternoon and VFR conditions are
anticipated at all sites this afternoon and tonight.
KLAX...high confidence in 18Z TAF. There is a 10% chance of
IFR/VLIFR conditions 08Z-16Z.
KBUR...high confidence in 18Z TAF.

.MARINE...05/1137 AM.
For the Outer Waters, high confidence in current forecast.
Northwest winds will increase to Small Craft Advisory (SCA) levels
this afternoon/evening and remain at SCA levels through Tuesday.
There is a 50% chance of winds reaching GALE force levels Friday
afternoon through Saturday night.
For the Inner Waters north of Point Conception, high confidence in
current forecast. SCA level northwest winds are expected each
afternoon and evening from today through Tuesday. There is a 30%
chance of GALE force gusts Friday afternoon through Saturday
evening.
For the waters south of Point Conception, moderate confidence in
current forecast. For the western half of the Santa Barbara
Channel, there is a 60% chance of SCA level winds this afternoon
and tonight and an 80% chance of SCA level winds Friday afternoon
through Saturday morning. Elsewhere, conditions are anticipated to
remain below SCA levels.
A long period south swell generated by Hurricane Fabio will
continue to move across the coastal waters through Friday
evening, before gradually diminishing. This swell will lead to
hazardous boating conditions nearshore due to large breaking
waves. In addition, hazardous mixed seas are likely due to the
combination of south swell and building short period northwest
waves.

.BEACHES...05/1139 AM.
A long-period SE to S swell from what once was Hurricane Fabbio
will peak in intensity across the coastal waters through Friday
before gradually diminishing. This swell, along with a building
short period northwest swell, is expected to produce high surf
with dangerous breaking waves nearing 10 feet. Strong rip currents
are expected and sneaker waves will be possible with this south
swell.
Minor coastal flooding is a concern for low-lying coastal areas
that have south to southeast exposure. Beach parking lots and
normally dry beach areas may be covered in sea water around the
late afternoon high tides. Any damage from the high surf is
expected to be minimal.
With record heat expected at the same time, and many people
heading to the beaches for relief, this swell event is likely to
be extremely dangerous. If entering the water, it always advised
to swim near an occupied lifeguard station.

.FIRE WEATHER...05/351 PM.
A significant heat wave is projected to affect Southern
California through Sunday, bringing a prolonged period of elevated
fire weather conditions to the southwest California. The peak of
the heat wave is expected to be Friday through Saturday, when
record breaking triple digit heat will be likely across many
inland areas. The warmest valley, lower mountain, and desert
locations will likely soar to between 104 and 114 degrees on
Friday, while portions of the Los Angeles County Coast and Santa
Barbara South Coast will likely climb to between 100 and 105
degrees due to a northerly offshore wind component. This extreme
heat will be accompanied with very low single digit humidities
on Friday (as low as 2 percent), possibly lingering into
Saturday. In addition, there will likely be very poor overnight
humidity recoveries across the mountains and foothills tonight and
Friday night. Gusty northerly winds will add to the fire weather
threat, with the strongest winds focused across the mountains
(especially I-5 corridor and Santa Ynez mountains), Santa Barbara
South Coast, Santa Clarita Valley, San Fernando Valley, and Santa
Monica mountains where gusts between 30 and 45 mph are expected,
except isolated gusts up to 50 mph in favored mountain areas.
These locations will likely have critical fire weather conditions,
resulting in the upgrade to a Red Flag Warning. The strongest
northerly winds are expected late tonight into Friday morning and
again Friday night into Saturday morning when both LAX-
Bakersfield and Santa Barbara- Bakersfield gradients peak around
-6 mb. Also of note is the gusty north winds and very low
humidities that develop tonight across southern Santa Barbara
County and portions of Los Angeles county which could bring brief
critical fire weather conditions to those areas. Other areas that
could see brief critical fire weather conditions during this
event include the Ventura county valleys, and Central Coast.
Due to the hot and unstable conditions expected on Friday and
Saturday, there is the potential for large vertical plume growth
with any new fires. A surge of monsoon moisture will bring a
thunderstorm threat to our south and east on Saturday, with the
leading edge of the mid level monsoon moisture and instability
bringing a slight chance of thunderstorms to the eastern San
Gabriels late in the day. If any thunderstorms were to develop,
there would be the potential for isolated dry lightning strikes
and gusty erratic surface winds. Very warm conditions are expected
to linger on Sunday into early next week, with some monsoon
moisture potentially moving into the region at times.
