.SYNOPSIS...15/811 AM.
Warm and dry conditions today will give way to cooler temperatures
and occasional breezy winds through the work week. In addition
there is a chance of rain and mountain snow in the region Monday
and Thursday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...15/126 PM.
A cold trough is approaching the state with the tail end of a cold
front expected to pass through our area Monday. Chances for rain
across SLO County look pretty good but less so to the south and
not enough to be worth mentioning south of SBA. Any amounts for
northern areas will be really light, mostly under a tenth of an
inch. With all the cold pouring in snow levels will fall quite a
bit with some light upslope snow showers possible along the
Grapevine Monday night.
Main thing again will be the wind, though it's not looking quite
as windy as with the last system, especially southern areas. We'll
have a decent afternoon sea breeze Monday afternoon that may need
low end wind advisories for some coastal areas but the north flow
aloft behind the cold front is not shaping up to be as strong as
the previous event and right now it looks more like advisory level
winds in the mtns and Antelope Valley. But still on the fence on
that and will leave the watch going to see how the 00z models look
tonight.
Light offshore flow expected Tue with a little ridge popping up
that will help warm temps back up to near normal. Wed starts off
lightly offshore but then trends quickly onshore ahead of the next
upper trough for Thu. This should result in some cooling at the
immediate coast but either little change or slightly warmer
inland.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...15/134 PM.
GFS/ECMWF sticking to their respective solutions for the Thu
trough with the operational GFS still giving the upper low enough
of an over-water trajectory to keep some rain chances going for at
least the northern areas while the ECMWF continues it inside
slider path. Differences are pretty minor but significant in terms
of their expected outcomes so this could still go either way.
However, a vast majority of the GFS ensemble members support rain
for northern areas Thu so certainly justified leaving pops in the
forecast. Won't last long whatever happens and we're back to
warmer conditions Fri/Sat. Could be some gusty northerly winds
behind the frontal passage Thu night into Friday. So far models
keeping gradients at least lightly offshore so not expecting a
huge warm up but inland areas expected to bounce back up in the
low to mid 80s by the end of the week and peaking Saturday before
turning cooler Sunday ahead of the next trough which is not
expected to bring any rain to the area.

At 23Z, the marine layer depth was 400 feet deep at KLAX. The top of
the inversion was 2100 feet, with a temperature of 18C.
Moderate confidence in wind forecast, with strong west winds on
Monday and ample turbulence around the mountains. Low confidence on
ceiling and -SHRA forecast. 60 percent chance of IFR/MVFR cats at
KLAX, KSMO, KLGB, KVNY, KBUR, 40 percent chance at KOXR KCMA. There
is a chance those sites stay more SCT than BKN.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in wind forecast. West winds 10 to 20 KT
will persist through the night above 500 feet, and could
occasionally surface. West wind gusts over 30 KT likely on Monday,
with an arrival window of 16-20Z. Low confidence in ceiling
forecast. 20 percent chance of LIFR for a few hours when clouds
first come in. If clouds do come in, cats will improve through the
night. 20 percent chance of -DZ 10-18Z.
KBUR...Moderate confidence in wind forecast. Low confidence in
ceiling forecast. 30 percent chance of LIFR for a few hours when
clouds first come in. If clouds do come in, cats will improve

For the Outer Waters, lingering hazardous seas and increasing
northwest winds will make for marginal advisory level conditions
today and this evening. Higher confidence for widespread Small
Craft Advisory level winds and seas late tonight through Monday
night. There is 30-50 percent chance of gales from late Monday
afternoon through Monday evening, highest for the southern
portion. Another period of gusty winds and moderately large seas
looks possible between Wednesday night and Friday.
For the inner waters north of Point Conception, there is a 60%
chance of Small Craft Advisory winds Monday and Monday night, and
again at times Tuesday night through Thursday.
For the inner waters south of Point Conception, winds increase
between this evening and tonight. Moderately high confidence in
Small Craft Advisory level winds this evening. Higher confidence
in winds increasing and seas building late tonight into Monday.
There is 40 percent chance of gales from late Monday afternoon
through Monday evening. Another period of gusty winds and
steep short period seas looks possible between Thursday and
Friday.
