.SYNOPSIS...22/810 PM.

Expect partly cloudy skies and temperatures a few degrees above
normal on Sunday and Monday with offshore flow. A low pressure
system will pass through the area on Christmas Day bringing cooler
temperatures and strong winds. There is a chance of light rain
and mountain snow, primarily in San Luis Obispo County and on the
northern mountain slopes.

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...22/817 PM.

***UPDATE***

Upper level clouds will continue to stream across the region
through Sunday as northwest flow aloft precedes a storm system
currently affecting northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
Northerly gradients are increasing over the area this evening,
with SBA to Bakersfield at -3.8 mb. Locally gusty conditions are
noted for areas near/west of Refugio with gusts between 30-40 mph,
and gusts to 30 mph near San Marcos Pass. Will update zones to
increase winds for the SBA South Coast but hold off on a Wind
Advisory for now as the winds are not widespread across the area.

Offshore gradients from LAX to Daggett are slightly stronger than
guidance at this time, so while trends are expected to weaken some
overnight, expect generally weak north to northeast winds across
the L.A./Ventura County interior sections. Peak gusts over the
interior mountains should be around 30 mph, with gusts up to 20
mph in the valleys and foothills.

The weak offshore flow conditions Sunday morning will bring high
temperatures into the lower to mid 70s across the warmest coast
and valley areas, and this is expected to persist through Monday.

Thick low clouds and fog across Kern County will spread into
eastern SLO County and Cuyama Valley tonight into Sunday morning.
In addition, patchy low clouds and fog are expected in the L.A.
Coastal Basin overnight into early Sunday.

***From Previous Discussion***

Surface high pressure will begin to strengthen near Bakersfield
on Sunday night, increasing the north-south offshore pressure
gradients to between -5 and -5.5 mb between SBA-Bakersfield and
LAX-Bakersfield. As a result, looking for northerly winds to
gust between 35 and 45 mph across the mountains (especially the
Santa Ynez range and I-5 Corridor) as well as the SBA south coast
(especially near Montecito hills). Wind advisories may be needed
for these areas on Sunday night.

12z NAM, GFS, and ECMWF models continue to track our next weather
system on a more inland path, thereby limiting the available
moisture. Any precipitation with this system is expected to be
fairly light due to its limited over-water trajectory, with the
best threat of light precipitation Monday night into Christmas
morning across the Central Coast, northern mountain slopes, and
eastern LA county southward to San Diego County. If the system is
able to dig further west and develop a better over-water
trajectory, then the threat of precipitation would increase, but
models continue to trend inland with the system. Areas that do
receive precipitation will generally see less than a quarter inch,
with highest amounts expected to be focused on the north facing
mountain slopes.

The most  significant impact with this system will be the threat
of strong northwest to north winds, especially on Christmas Day
when upper level wind support and cold air advection peak. By
Tuesday afternoon, latest NAM, GFS, and ECMWF models generally
agree on digging a cold closed low pressure system centered near
Needles along the Colorado River Valley. This positioning of the
upper level low pressure system is in a favorable location for
a potentially strong northerly wind event across portions of our
forecast area. In fact, latest 12z and 18z NAM models been
consistent with showing a strong northerly 500 mb wind core of
100 to 115 knots impacting the forecast area on Christmas Day.
With this very strong flow in the upper atmosphere, model cross
sections showing the potential for mountain wave wind activity.
The strongest winds with this event will likely be the mountains,
Antelope Valley, SBA south coast, and Santa Clarita Valley where
wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph will be possible. High Wind Watches may
need to be issued for the some of these areas (especially the
mountains) as we draw closer to the event, as damaging wind gusts
of 60 mph will be possible.

Another concern will be falling snow levels late Monday night
into Christmas Day when north facing mountain slopes could see
snow levels lowering to between 4500 and 5000 feet. An inch or two
of snow accumulation in the mountains is possible with this
system, especially north facing mountain slopes. At this time,
snow levels are expected to remain just above the Grapevine level,
but this will be a close call, and motorists planning to travel
along Interstate 5 for the holidays should check the latest
weather forecasts and road conditions.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...22/214 PM.

Dry ridging with fairly strong northerly flow sets up Wednesday
through Saturday. It will be dry with mostly clear to partly
cloudy skies. The northerly flow will keep the north canyon winds
going through the period and the I-5 corridor may see a few
periods of advisory level winds. There will be quite a bit of cool
air moving in from the interior and this will keep max temps a
few degrees below normal through the period.

.AVIATION...23/0704Z.

At 0545Z at KLAX...the marine inversion was 800 ft deep. The top
of the inversion was near 1300 ft with a temperature of 17 deg C.

Low confidence in the coastal TAFs. There is a chc of VLIFR/LIFR
conds at any given site through 17Z.

Moderate confidence for the vly TAFs with some MVFR haze possible.

Fair confidence in KPRB where timing may be off by a hour or two.

Good confidence in desert TAFs.

KLAX...Low confidence in TAF. IFR/LIFR/VLIFR conds are possible
any time from 08Z-17Z. There is a 20 percent chc VLIFR conds. Vis
will likely change frequently. Good confidence in TAF after 17Z.
Good confidence that East winds will remain under 7 kt.

KBUR...Good confidence in TAF. There is a 30 percent chc MVFR vis
could last until 18Z.

.MARINE...22/732 PM.

For the Outer Waters, moderate confidence in current forecast. A
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) for the northern outer water zone
(PZZ670) has been expanded to PZZ673, and will continue through at
least Sunday night. SCA winds are likely for the southern outer
zone, PZZ676, by Sunday late afternoon. For all the outer waters,
SCA winds are likely through much of the coming week. In addition,
there is a 50% chance of Gale Force winds Tue thru Thu. Steep
short period wind waves will prevail along with a large NW swell.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. Winds and seas will remain below
SCA levels through Monday evening. There is a 50% chance of SCA
level winds and seas at times for late Monday night through
Thursday along with steep short period seas mixed with a large
northwest swell.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, generally high
confidence in current forecast. Winds and seas will remain below
SCA levels through Monday morning. There is a 50%-60% chance of
SCA level winds and seas at times Monday afternoon through
Thursday, and a 40% chance of Gale Force winds at times Monday
night and Tuesday with building short period seas.

.BEACHES...22/133 PM.

A relatively large westerly swell will diminish through this
afternoon and tonight with localized elevated surf this afternoon.

A moderate west-northwest swell could bring another round of high
surf to the Central Coast Sunday night into Monday. An even larger
west-northwest swell will likely result in high surf for all west
and northwest facing beaches Monday night through Tuesday night.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (TUE-SAT).

There is the potential for strong and damaging northerly winds on
Christmas Day across portions of Southwest California, especially
in the mountains. High surf conditions and strong rip currents
could impact the Central Coast much of next week, as well as the
west facing beaches of LA/Ventura counties on Monday night and
Tuesday. Freeze and frost conditions possible at times,
especially in wind protected locations.
