.SYNOPSIS...01/152 AM.

Moderate to strong onshore flow will keep temperatures at or
slightly below seasonal normals through Wednesday with extensive
low clouds and fog during the night and morning hours. From
Thursday through next weekend, high pressure will strengthen over
the area. This will bring very hot and dry conditions to the area
with record temperatures possible on Friday and Saturday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...01/914 AM.

***UPDATE***

Short term forecast appears on track. The low clouds and fog are
clearing rapidly in Los Angeles County and more slowly elsewhere.
Things should clear to the coast in LA by 11 am and by 1 pm in
other locations. Onshore winds should keep things reasonably cool
for July 1st, with breezy conditions in Antelope Valley by the
afternoon.

***From Previous Discussion***

Overall, 00Z models in good synoptic agreement through the period.
At upper levels, ridge noses over the area today then retreats on
Monday/Tuesday as trough develops over the West Coast. Near the
surface, moderate to strong onshore flow will continue.

Forecast-wise, nothing too exciting in the short term. Main story
will continue to be the marine layer stratus. Currently, sounding
data indicates marine inversion around 1500 to 2000 feet deep.
Given the synoptic pattern, will anticipate a little deepening
tonight/Monday and more deepening Monday night/Tuesday. So with
continued moderate to strong onshore flow, low clouds will push
well inland each night. Do not anticipate the inversion to be too
strong, so clouds should dissipate most areas each afternoon.

As for temperatures, the combination of lowering thicknesses/H5
heights and good onshore flow will result in a gradual cooling
trend for all areas through Tuesday.

Winds will not be too much of an issue. The moderate to strong
onshore flow will generate gusty southwest winds across the
mountains and Antelope Valley. However, any potential advisory
level gusts will be very localized.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...01/148 AM.

Overall, 00Z models continue to exhibit very good synoptic
agreement through the period. At upper levels, ridge will build in
from the east, peaking in strength on Friday and Saturday. Near
the surface, onshore gradients will weaken through the period,
actually turning weakly offshore Friday morning and Saturday
morning.

Forecast-wise, focus in the extended period will the heat. Wednesday
should be slightly warmer most areas as thicknesses/H5 heights
increase slightly and onshore flow/marine influence weakens. On
Thursday, the warm up will begin in earnest with the area warming
up 6-12 degrees over Wednesday's high temperatures. For Friday and
Saturday, even warmer temperatures are expected with thickness and
boundary layer temperatures peaking and weak offshore flow in the
morning hours. On Friday and Saturday, many areas will have high
temperatures in the 90s to lower 100s and several temperature
records could be broken. Additionally, overnight low will be quite
warm during this time. So, critical heat conditions will be
possible Friday and Saturday and there may need to be some heat
products issued for the area.

A close second to the heat concerns will be the potential for
gusty northerly winds, beginning Thursday evening and continuing
through Saturday morning. Models continue to forecast an increase
in northerly gradients, beginning Thursday evening and peaking in
strength Friday evening. So, there is the potential for advisory
level Sundowner winds across SBA county Thursday night/Friday
morning. For Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, the
Sundowner winds may be stronger across SBA county and advisory
level northerly winds could develop through the Interstate 5
Corridor. Given the expected hot and dry conditions, there is the
potential for critical fire weather conditions from Thursday
evening through Saturday.

.AVIATION...01/1849Z.

At 1700Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1600 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was around 4000 ft with a temp of 20C.

Mostly clear skies across the area this afternoon, except for the
South Coast and KSBA where MVFR cigs should linger through 23Z.
Otherwise, MVFR/IFR cigs expected to return to coast and valleys
overnight with lower cigs north of Point Conception. Moderate
confidence in timing. 40% chance KPRB remains clear through the
period. 20% chance of LIFR conds for KSBP and KSMX between 12Z-15Z
Monday.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in the 18Z TAF. VFR conds through early
evening. Cigs are likely to return between 06-08Z. Clearing may be
delayed by up to 2 hrs from taf time of 17Z.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in the 18Z TAF. There is a 20-30%
There is a 20% chance that cigs will arrive +/- 2 hrs from taf
time of 09Z.

.MARINE...01/847 AM.

Winds and seas are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory
levels through Wednesday. SCA winds are likely across the Outer
Waters and possible for the Inner Waters north of Point Sal and
the Western Santa Barbara Channel by Thursday evening. Gale force
winds are likely for at least portions of the Outer Waters by
Friday into next weekend.

A long period south swell is expected to arrive across the coastal
waters by Thursday and could lead to hazardous boating conditions
near harbor entrances and jetties.

.BEACHES...01/256 AM.

A long period southerly swell originating from increasing tropical
activity in the Eastern Pacific may bring high surf and strong
rip currents focused across exposed south facing beaches of
southwest California as early as Wednesday evening and possibly
continuing through Friday or Saturday. A short period, locally
generated northwest swell may add to the potentially dangerous
surf conditions, especially across west and northwest facing
beaches.

.FIRE WEATHER...01/1055 AM.

A significant heat wave is projected to affect Southwest
California Thursday through Sunday bringing a prolonged period of
elevated fire weather conditions to Southwest California. The
peak heat of the heat wave is expected to be Friday into Saturday,
when record breaking triple digit heat will be possible across
many inland areas. In fact, warmest valley, lower mountain, and
desert areas could soar to between 105 and 110 degrees on Friday
and Saturday, while portions of the LA basin and SBA south coast
could approach 100 degrees due to a northerly offshore wind
component. This heat wave will be accompanied with very low
humidities, with the potential for widespread single digit
humidities Friday into Saturday. In addition, there will likely be
very poor overnight humidity recoveries across the mountains and
foothills during this event. Gusty northerly winds are also
expected across the mountains, select valleys, as well as the
Santa Barbara south coast, possibly resulting in critical fire
weather conditions. The strongest northerly winds are expected
Thursday night into Friday morning and again Friday night into
Saturday morning when both LAX- Bakersfield and Santa Barbara-
Bakersfield gradients peak around -6 mb. This could result
in wind gusts up to 45 mph across the Santa Ynez mountains and
adjacent foothills, as well as the Interstate 5 corridor of
the Los Angeles county mountains. These gusty northerly winds
will add to the threat of large fires, bringing the potential
for critical fire weather conditions.
