Through Tonight...
Main forecast concerns/challenges are with isolated showers and
thunderstorms this afternoon, and with increasing chances for
additional showers and thunderstorms late tonight. Latest radar
imagery depicting isolated showers and storms developing along the I-
39 corridor across north central IL. Substantial heating with higher
dewpoint air remaining in place has once again allowed for an
uncapped environment this afternoon, with steeper low lapse rates
situated over much of the area. In this setup, think additional
isolated development will be possible across the CWA, however,
confidence is low on exact placement. There is currently not any
real surface focus in place this afternoon, and expect any
development will be where surface convergence will be enough to
support growth. Once again, in this environment, this could happen
anywhere across northern IL and northwest IN this afternoon into
early.
Coverage of storms will be low, and duration brief. This lacking
focus and bulk shear should limit intensity this afternoon. However,
given the steep low level lapse rates/ML CAPE axis in place, would
not take much for some isolated robust development. The threat of
severe weather is low, however, with the DCAPE axis overhead, could
not rule out a few stronger storms capable of gusty winds. Also,
although brief, any storm will be capable of producing heavy
downpours.
Additional precip chances later tonight do look to be confined to
locations along and west of I-39, mainly late tonight. Upstream
precip will continue to slowly shift east tonight, with guidance
showing the eastern extent of this precip possibly reaching the CWA.
However, more widespread precip chances don't look to arrive until
later in the day Wednesday.

Thursday through Tuesday...
Overview...Cooler air is almost here! Highs Thursday will be in the
70s with morning precipitation that declines through the day.
Temperatures are forecast to be below normal through the weekend,
and rise to near normal early next week. Guidance has better
agreement with the path of Tropical Storm Gordon's remnants.
Precipitation from that system reaches the region this weekend,
and it looks like areas along and south of I-80 will see the bulk
of the precipitation.
An upper level disturbance will shift south and east Thursday
leading to a decaying precip trend. The best chance for precip will
be Thursday morning, but I kept at least a chance through the night.
Attention then turns to the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon.
Guidance has much better consistency with the low's path, although
the 00Z ECMWF has a slower solution and takes the low over NW IN
Sunday night. It looks like the northern edge of the precipitation
shield should impact areas south of I-80 later this week and over
the weekend. If the ECMWF is right, more of the forecast area may
see precip with heavy rain possible south of I-80 Sunday.
High pressure spreads across the region early next week bringing
more seasonal temps with it.

For the 06Z TAFs...
Quiet conditions, dry and VFR with sswly to swly winds will
persist through tomorrow afternoon. Mid and high cloud will
increase through the late morning and afternoon hours, but cigs
will remain VFR. The main concern for the period will be timing of
shra/tsra and associated CIG/VIS impacts as a cold front
approaches the region tomorrow afternoon and crosses the region
through the evening and overnight tomorrow. Latest guidance
continues to indicate that some sct shra/tsra could reach the RFD
area by 18-20z, but the most widespread, persistent activity will
likely be along and behind the front. So, have maintained the
timing and trends of the going forecast. Will likely transition
from the prob30 to tempo ts as timing becomes a bit more certain
and there will likely be at least a few hours of prevailing ts at
the terminals, but exact timing will be highly dependent on the
progression of the front. Will also maintain the idea of an
extended period of MVFR CIGs following the frontal passage as
nely flow sets up behind the front and there is still the
potential for IFR cigs as well, but confidence in timing and
duration remains too low to include in the TAFs at this time.

South to southwest winds will increase especially over the northern
half of the lake this morning as a surface low currently over the
Plains shifts across Wisconsin. Winds will increase to 30 kt over
the northern half of the lake, and a brief period of low end gales
are possible. The low's cold front will pass over the lake this
afternoon and evening, and winds will become north to northeast 15-
25 kt behind it. Waves will become hazardous to small craft tonight
into Thursday, and I issued a Small Craft Advisory accordingly. The
waves will be marginal Thursday night through Friday evening.
High pressure will build over the northern Great Lakes Thursday, and
northeast winds 10-20 kt will become east Friday night. Another
large high will build over Ontario Friday. The high will move over
Quebec Saturday night while the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon
will move across the mid Mississippi Valley. The look will pass
south of the lake and reach Lake Erie/southern Michigan Sunday night
or Monday. East winds will increase to 30 kt over the southern half
of the lake Saturday night into Sunday morning. Another Small Craft
Advisory will likely be needed late this week into the weekend. High
pressure will spread over the lake early next week.
