Through Friday...

Northeast IL and northwest IN are in the convergence zone between
a convective complex across southern IL and an upper trough across
WI. It is these areas where better forcing resides, but there is
some weaker forcing in a moist atmosphere such that
isolated/widely scattered shower and thunderstorm development is
possible just about anywhere as we are weakly unstable and
uncapped. There is no great surface trigger and shear is weak,
thus any thunderstorms over the area would be isolated and likely
shorter lived, with better chances across northwest IN and closer
to central Illinois. Brief heavy downpours, an uptick in already
breezy west/southwest winds due to decent low level lapse
rates/DCAPE, and lightning are the main hazards.

Forcing from the southern stream shortwave will creep farther
northward this evening, which would favor areas south of I-80 and
areas east into NW Indiana for any slightly better coverage this
evening.

Overnight, the northern stream upper trough will dig
southeastward. and this will enable a backdoor cold front to
cruise southward across the lake tonight. This front will arrive
Friday morning and bring some clouds and cooler/drier northeast
winds. Expect significantly cooler conditions at the lakefront,
and for the Chicago metro counties, with still warm conditions for
areas south of I-80 and west toward I-39. The frontal passage
should be mainly dry, maybe a few sprinkles.

Friday night through Thursday...

A period of quieter weather is setting up for the longer term
forecast period.

Following the passage of the cold front Thursday night, generally
north flow will set up and continue into the weekend.  Cooler
conditions along the lake with higher temps inland expected for
Saturday, with highs in the mid 60s along the lake front and upper
70s to lower 80s well inland.  as an upper ridge passes east of the
region Saturday night, a long wave upper trough will cross the
Middle and Upper Mississippi Valley while an associated sfc trough
and weak cold front pass through the region Saturday night.  The
greatest chances for any pcpn through the long term forecast period
will be associated with the frontal passage Saturday night.  Weak
high pressure will slowly build in behind the front, beginning a
period of generally dry weather with seasonable temperatures for
sunday and into next week.

.AVIATION...
For the 18Z TAFs...

Concerns are convective development this afternoon/early evening,
then a cold front with a sharp wind shift to NE Friday morning
accompanied by a period of MVFR cigs.

Northeast IL and northwest IN are in the convergence zone between
a convective complex across southern IL and an upper trough across
WI. It is these areas where better forcing resides, but there is
some weaker forcing in a moist atmosphere. There is no great
surface trigger, thus any development over the terminals would be
isolated and likely shorter lived. Therefore have kept SHRA/TS
out of the TAFs at this point. Better development is expected
south and east of the terminals.

Expect a diminishing trend mid to late evening. Focus will shift
to timing the northeast winds with a sharp backdoor cold front
Friday morning. Confidence on timing is medium, as is the duration
of MVFR cigs with the front. Northeast winds will then continue
through the remainder of the TAF period.

A cold front will move down the lake tonight. Drier air behind the
front should scour out any lingering fog, and while modest cold
advection drives north winds up to 25-30 kt. A Small Craft Advisory
will remain in effect for the IL/IN nearshore waters from late
Friday morning through early Saturday morning.  Winds should
diminish and veer to the east Friday night into Saturday. A broad
low pressure trough and associated cold front will move over the
lake Saturday night into Sunday morning. Winds will become northwest
25-30 kt behind the front for sunday afternoon into Monday
afternoon. Winds should diminish again by Monday night and into the
middle of next week as high pressure spreads over the lake.

At 225 PM CDT, trained weather spotters reported a strong
thunderstorm over Goodings Grove, or over Homer Glen, moving east at
25 mph. This storm produced a 43 mph wind gust at the Romeoville
airport and a spotter report of a 50 mph wind gust in Plainfield.

Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph will be possible with this storm along
with heavy downpours.

Locations impacted include...
Joliet, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn, Lockport, New Lenox,
Homer Glen, Blue Island, Alsip, Matteson, Mokena, Frankfort, Lemont,
Midlothian, Worth, Flossmoor, Posen, Olympia Fields, Oak Forest and
