change expected this afternoon, but did refine the timing of the
more widespread precip coming in tonight. Lowered POPs in the
Bluegrass and parts of south-central Kentucky this evening, but
still likely/categorical by daybreak Fri.

.Short Term...(Today through Friday Morning)

The January thaw continues this morning as temperatures are quite
warm at this hour. Observations range from 50s to even a few 60s
across southern Indiana and central Kentucky. Winds have been steady
out of the south at the surface, and AMDAR soundings indicate a 40-
50kt LLJ just a few thousand feet off the deck that is helping to
transport warmer air and more moisture to the region.

Today will be the last warm day we'll see for quite some time before
a significant cold front and winter storm affect the region. With
the strong WAA and modest isentropic lift regime, skies will remain
overcast for the day. Scattered showers and drizzle will also
develop, though overall rainfall amounts will remain light. Despite
the clouds and rain, could be pushing record high temperatures for a
few sites this afternoon.

Temperatures will remain warm overnight ahead of the cold front,
similar to yesterday. The cold front should begin approaching
northwestern portions of the CWA around 6z and quickly work its way
eastward.

For the sake of consistency with the potential winter storm, the
rest of the short-term period has been merged with the long-term
period.

.Long Term...(Friday Morning through Wednesday)

...Wintry Precipitation Will Impact Travel Friday into Saturday...

Confidence continues to grow that the region will experience wintry
weather Friday into Saturday. Details regarding the winter storm
have been broken up into the following categories: Timing/P-Type,
Impacts, and Final Thoughts.

***Timing/P-Type***

The shallow nature of the cold front will promote a variety of
precipitation types during this event as the cold air aloft "catches
up" during the day Friday. Rain will be ongoing ahead and along the
front, but surface temperatures will quickly drop to near or below
freezing Friday morning along and west of I-65 behind the cold
front, while temperatures a few thousand feet up could be +40F
degrees. With this type of profile, freezing rain would be the
expected and predominant p-type. Colder air will continue to
advect in at the surface and aloft as the morning progresses, and
as a result we will see a transition from freezing rain to sleet.
By Friday afternoon, enough cold air should be in place that we
start to see sleet change over to snow and stay as snow for most
of the event. It's possible we could transition back to freezing
rain/drizzle or ice pellets as we lose saturation in the DGZ
Friday night into Saturday morning.

It's important to note that the rain -> freezing rain -> sleet ->
snow transition will first occur west of I-65 Friday morning into
the afternoon, while eastern portions of the CWA (near the I-75
corridor) may not start that transition until early Friday afternoon
and continue into Friday evening. Precipitation should persist for
areas west of I-65 until about midnight Friday, while areas east of
I-65 could see the precipitation linger into early Saturday morning,
especially near the I-75 corridor.

The amounts continue to remain tricky and ultimately depend on how
things transition from rain -> freezing rain -> sleet -> snow, as
well as storm track. Given the complexity of this storm system and
the various model output regarding the evolution of p-type,
confidence is low with respect to amounts. Light ice accumulations
look likely, and generally keeping snow amounts to 1"-4". There is
some concern we could see a narrow swath of enhanced snowfall values
due to strong frontogenetic/mesoscale forcing associated with this
system. The 12km/3km NAM, with its higher resolution and better
ability to capture mesoscale details compared to coarser global
models, has hinted at this for parts of the Ohio Valley.
Unfortunately, predicting where these band(s) develop and set-up
this far out is extremely difficult, so for now will keep snowfall
totals broad-brushed, but will mention in the winter storm watch
product that locally higher amounts are possible.

***Impacts***

As surface temperatures drop below freezing behind the front, we
should see the rain transition to freezing rain. Some questions
remain as to how quickly surfaces will cool behind the front, given
how warm we've been recently, which will have an impact on roads and
travelers. Elevated surfaces will be the quickest to drop below
freezing and icing becomes a concern. Ground surfaces will take
longer to respond, and it may not be until the afternoon that we
start to see ground temperatures get close to the freezing mark. The
other caveat is in areas that transition to snow or sleet quickly,
if precip rates begin to exceed melting rates, roads could get icy
and messy very quickly.

Once ground temperatures do cool to freezing, travel will become
very difficult quickly. We expect road conditions to generally
deteriorate from west to east as the day progresses. By Friday
night, travel will be difficult to hazardous for the entire
region.

***Final Thoughts***

Given that all of our region will experience some sort of wintry
precipitation, confidence is high that there will be impacts to
travel. As such, have decided to expand the winter storm watch over
the entire region.

By Saturday afternoon...

Strong Canadian high pressure begins to build into the region
Saturday. This will help to keep us dry, but temperatures will
remain quite cold. The Canadian high will slip off to the east
Sunday evening into Monday as a clipper system moves in from the
northwest. Models are showing a decent amount of moisture with this
clipper, and with temperature profiles staying below freezing for
the duration of the event, p-type would be snow. Some timing
differences exist between models, but looks like snow would start
sometime Monday morning or afternoon and continue into Monday night
or Tuesday morning. Accumulating snowfall certainly looks possible
with this system.

Another re-inforcing shot of cold air will arrive behind the
clipper/surface cold front for Tuesday and beyond. Strong Canadian
high pressure should keep the region dry, but very cold.

.Aviation...(18Z TAF Issuance)

Scattered showers throughout this afternoon will then trend toward
drier conditions early evening. Gusty winds out of the south will
prevail. The main line of showers will begin moving into HNB area
late evening then steadily move east through Friday morning. Sharp
frontal passage will turn winds to the west/northwest quickly. As
surface temps fall below freezing, expect freezing rain then to
sleet and snow during late morning at HNB, BWG, and SDF. LEX will
likely hold off until the afternoon.

For the SDF TAF, freezing rain accumulation could be significant
during the morning hours with current forecast calling for 0.1 to
0.2 inches of ice accumulation. Snow accumulation 2 to 4 inches is
expected in the afternoon and evening hours.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of south central
Indiana and Central Kentucky.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Rain is expected to change over to a wintry mix during the day on
Friday and then eventually all snow by Friday evening. Ice
accumulations are likely, mainly on Friday west of Interstate 65.
Snow accumulations will also be likely into Friday night, with the
highest snow totals expected in southern Indiana and north-central
Kentucky. Travel will be hazardous during the Friday evening rush
hour and into Saturday.

Spotters may be needed to report snow and ice accumulations late
Friday through Saturday.
