An anomalous cool early spring day is ongoing this afternoon
across our forecast area, with scattered to broken low clouds and a
gusty west-northwest surface wind within a cool advection pattern.
The greatest cloud cover exists over southern IN at this time. As
surface high pressure builds east from the mid MS Valley, the clouds
will diminish late this afternoon and early evening, while winds
become light tonight. This will set the stage for a cold night.
Under a mostly clear sky and light wind, radiational cooling will
cause surface temps to fall into the mid 20s to around 30 by
Thursday morning.
A Freeze Warning currently is in effect for a part of central KY.
However, after new input from the Univ. of KY Ag Weather Center,
growth is sufficient across the state to warrant a Freeze Warning
across all of our KY counties. Over southern IN, growth overall is a
little less. Input from Huber's Orchard also indicated that growth
is behind schedule and that these temps will have minimal impact
tonight. Thus, will leave southern IN out of the warning, but temps
will be subfreezing in this area as well. The effective warning time
remains the same from 12 am to 10 am EDT.
On Thursday, the surface high begins to move off to our east
allowing for temps to moderate somewhat into the 50s across the
region, approaching 60 downstate. A weak weather system will pass to
our north resulting in some mid-high clouds Thursday afternoon,
especially across northern areas, but conditions will remain dry.

Friday - Friday Night
Models continue to advertise potential for winter precip Friday
night, particularly across the northern half or two-thirds of our
forecast area. As the flow aloft backs to westerly, isentropic lift
and low-mid-level frontogenetical forcing will increase over the
lower OH and TN Valleys. At the same time, a surface low will head
ENE across the TN Valley. As a result, precip will break out across
central KY and south-central IN Friday afternoon or early evening.
Since temps Friday afternoon will peak well up in the 50s (with
lower 60s downstate), all precip should start as rain.
However, as cold low-level air surges south to the north of the
surface low, model time-height cross sections and soundings show
temps falling quickly allowing for a changeover to snow (with a
little sleet possible during the transition). This will occur over
southern IN first then work into central KY. Precip should remain as
rain for much of the forecast period over south-central KY, with
some heavy rain possible. However, it looks like even there it
should end as some brief snow.
Snowfall amounts right now are tenuous, as models offer differing
QPF and timing of the cold air coincident with deep-layered moisture
and ascent. However, anywhere from 1-4 inches is possible over the
northern half of our forecast area. Some of the snow may briefly
melt upon falling given warmer ground from the daytime, but rates
and falling temps will overcome this, including even on some roads
early Saturday morning. Definitely some impact will occur. Later
shifts will further evaluate this system and consider any needed
headlines as the event draws closer in time and confidence increases.
Saturday - Saturday Night...
All precip will move out Saturday morning, leaving a raw chilly day
for early April. High temps are only projected to reach the upper
30s and lower 40s, which would be some 20-25 degrees below normal if
these temps verify. It will also be a little breezy as well to add
to the chill.
As the surface high moves across the OH Valley Saturday night and
Sunday morning, cold air will be entrenched. Lows will be in the
lower to mid 20s, and some normally colder valleys could see teens.
Thus, a very hard freeze is likely across our entire area.
Sunday and Beyond...
High pressure will be sitting over the OH Valley region by Sunday
morning, but will slowly move eastward through the day. A strong
system will eject out of the northern Rockies Sunday morning, and
arrive to our region by late Sunday afternoon. Forcing from this
system, along with isentropic lift, will aid in the development of
precipitation after 18z Sunday for southern Indiana and central
Kentucky. Temperature profiles look cold enough for some snow Sunday
evening, though warmer air advecting in from the south around 900mb-
850mb could transition everything over to rain. For now will keep a
mix of rain/snow for most areas and watch for model trends.
Temperatures gradually warm in the lower atmosphere by Monday
morning to where p-type will be a cold rain. Some model differences
exist with a southern stream system trying to phase with a northern
stream system near our region, but it looks like we should begin
drying late Monday or early Tuesday. Any remaining showers should
push out by Tuesday evening with high pressure building in on
Wednesday.
