Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 302 PM PDT Thu Mar 15 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Another winter storm will move into the region beginning tonight and continuing through Saturday bringing periods of snow. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday. Upper low off the Oregon coast this afternoon will continue to move southward tonight and Friday. Snow will begin to spread into northwest NV tonight, then slowly spread south and east Friday and Friday night. Accumulating snow is expected with this system, especially in areas where the frontal band resides over during the night and morning hours. Generally expecting 3 to 7 inches storm total in the valleys with up to a foot or more in the mountains. Some of this snow will melt during the daytime hours so total accumulations on the ground will be less, especially in valley areas. Have issued Winter Weather Advisory for nearly all of northern and central NV for this event, with the main impacts at night when snow will accumulate on roadways. Snow will begin to taper off by Saturday afternoon as upper low moves out of the area with mostly dry conditions by Sunday afternoon. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through Thursday. There is disagreement amongst long term model members later next week in relation to the intensity and timing of features. However both agree fairly well that fairly moist systems should move across Nevada. To start next week a weak short wave should slide across Great Basin bringing a small amount of moisture. This should cause spotty snow showers mainly along the Idaho border. A weak ridge should then briefly bring calm and dry conditions late on Monday through Tuesday morning. This should be followed up by on Tuesday by a Pacific system that has the potential to tap deep subtropical moisture. The amount of moisture should cause wide spread shower activity across Nevada lasting through Thursday. As the system looks to tap warmer air the showers should start off as a snow to rain/snow mix before transitioning to rain for the valleys. With current model discrepancies it is hard to tell how much or how fast warmer moist air will move into the region so the transitions times are hard to pin down. To further complicate this, there is also the possibility that cold air could slide into the region mixing with the warm air on Thursday. This could lead to the valleys transitioning back into a rain/snow mix. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions continue through today and into the overnight hours. There remains the chance for some residual showers from lingering moisture today but no significant impacts expected. There will be a small chance for some morning fog at KELY tomorrow. A winter storm will bring deteriorating conditions; tomorrow morning for KWMC, tomorrow afternoon for KEKO, and tomorrow evening for KELY and KTPH. The clouds decks will be MVFR to IFR for the duration of the system. The low cloud decks will cause mountain obscurations across Nevada. The system will produce snow showers that can drastically reduce visibility as low as VLIFR for the heaviest showers. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
