Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 246 AM PST Wed Feb 28 2018 .SYNOPSIS...A break in the weather is expected through Wednesday afternoon before the next storm system is forecast to impact the region. This system will be a prolonged and cold event with widespread accumulating snowfall from Thursday through Saturday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Overall pattern: persistent long wave trough over the west coast...stable Greenland high...generally fixed relatively flat central US ridge. Lots of short waves moving into west coast with ample maritime polar moisture and temps. Great Basin will be buffeted by a short wave closing off into a major low pressure center dropping south along the coast of Oregon and then moving northeast into southern Alberta. It is associated with another closed low over Northwest Territories which is causing it to rotate in more-or-less tandem fashion. This southern low has significant trough extending south from and rotating around it. These troughs will dominate the short term forecast. Actually, this short term forecast duration was selected because it contains the most active of the storms passing through essentially the middle forecast term. Bottom line is a long duration event starting in northwest Nevada tonight, progressing over northern, then central and eastern Nevada through Saturday. Cold air and moisture sufficient for tons of snow. Valleys will vary wildly with anywhere from 1-8 inches increasing from northwest to southeast in severity. Mountains also will range from around 6 inches in drier northwest Nevada to over a foot and half storm totals in the higher mountains of northern and eastern Nevada. Travel will be a problem. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through Wednesday. Snow tappers off Sunday morning with large cold upper trough lifting out of Nevada during the afternoon and evening hours. Seasonably cold and drier weather follows for early next week. Anticipate low temperatures will likely bottom out in the single digits above and below zero in many areas Sunday night into Monday morning given fresh snow cover, clearer skies, and light winds. Progressive upper ridge moves through the Great Basin on Tuesday followed by milder southerly flow ahead of a Pacific frontal system that may not make much headway into Nevada on Wednesday, but provide a chance of some light snow showers or flurries in the far north and west. As a result, temperatures should warm back up closer to normal by the middle of next week with daytime highs rising into the lower to mid 40s. && .AVIATION...Some stubborn low stratus will linger around KELY early this morning, otherwise VFR conditions will prevail at KWMC, KEKO, and KTPH with a gradual increase in high and then mid- level clouds across the state today. Ceilings will lower in the north tonight with some snow showers moving into the vicinity of KWMC between 06Z - 12Z Thursday, and around/after 12Z Thursday morning at KEKO. A series of Pacific weather systems will cause more adverse winter weather with periods of MVFR and IFR conditions across much of the region starting Thursday and lingering into Sunday morning. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
