Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 226 AM PST Thu Jan 18 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Unseasonably warm today. Later today and into Friday a cold front will pass from NW to SE across the region. For most valley locations, precipitation will begin as rain, then change over to snow tonight into Friday. Summits across northern NV will see some snow as early as midnight tonight. By the mid to late morning on Friday most valley locations across the region will see snow. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Warm southwest flow today will yield well above normal temperatures across the region this afternoon, with good chances that the record for the city of Elko will be tied or broken. Strong jet energy will spread into western portions of the CWA today, resulting in gusty southwest winds, strongest over higher terrain. Have added blowing dust for portions of southeastern Humboldt County, as well as significant portions of Lander and Eureka Counties from late this morning into the evening hours. The cold front is still on track to enter Humboldt County today, and pass from NW to SE across the CWA this evening and into Friday. Made a few minor adjustment to POPs, generally slowing the arrival of the frontal passage by a couple hours. Have also added isolated thunderstorms to portions of central NV for the Friday afternoon time-frame as LIs come in around zero with the passing front. Strong dynamics across east-central NV Friday afternoon and evening with good convergence may result in even higher QPF/snow amounts than current guidance and forecast suggest. All snow headlines for this approaching system remain unchanged. With the front passing southeast into Utah Friday night, cooler, more seasonable temperatures return for Saturday, with some lingering light snow showers possible across much of the region. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. A departing winter storm will be pushing east into Utah during the Saturday night to Sunday time. A ridge of high pressure will build in behind the storm system on Sunday. There will be a quick break in the weather on Sunday before the next weather system comes in Sunday night and Monday. The afternoon highs for Sunday will be near normal, with readings in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Sunday night and Monday. The next weather system will be travailing across the forecast area during this time. Main focus area for precipitation will be across areas north of US Highway 50. At this time, the best accumulations are more likely in northern Elko county. As of now this system looks to be capable of producing an inch or two of snow in the northern valleys and less than an inch elsewhere. Winds will be generally light, but could be breezy in Humboldt county. Highs will be in the low to upper 40s with lows in the teens and 20s. The pattern of active weather continues after a break with an upper ridge building in on Monday night and Tuesday. There could be some leftover snow showers but should be quiet for the most part. Highs on Tuesday will be in the 30s and 40s with lows in the teens and 20s. Another system may be possible Wednesday through Thursday with snow showers. Confidence remains somewhat low but it is improving as models are getting a better handle on the storm. Highs will continue to remain near normal for this time of year. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected as mid and high level clouds move over the area. Breezy conditions this afternoon for all terminals. Conditions will deteriorate with an onset of a storm system later today lasting through Friday. This will bring low ceilings of possibly ifr or lower with mountain obscuration.
