Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 335 PM PDT Sun Sep 9 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Warm and dry weather will continue into early next week as gusty southwesterly to westerly winds begin to increase. With the increase in winds, cooler temperatures are anticipated by the middle portion of next week with temperatures returning to near normal for this time of the year. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. No changes of significance was made to the forecast as model agreement is excellent for the short term. Winds will gradually increase Monday with afternoon gusts in the 20 to 25 mph range. This will begin the transition into the very dry and breezy/windy weather pattern expected this week. Details on fire weather are listed in the fire weather section. .LONG TERM...Tuesday night through next Sunday. The main forecast concern in the long term continues be the winds. Long wave trough dominates the West, bringing a dry southwesterly flow aloft. Expect breezy to windy conditions to continue in the afternoon/early evenings on Wednesday and Thursday. Please see the Fire Weather section for the hazardous conditions that this will create. Temperatures will cool by 5-10 degrees and be closer to seasonal averages. Look for daytime highs in the 70s and 80s and nighttime lows in the 30s and 40s. Both the GFS and EC bring a shower to northern Elko county near the Idaho border on Wednesday night as a piece of energy moves through, but brought in only low pops due to this dry flow. Heights will start to increase again in Nevada on Friday and continue through the weekend as the upper ridge begins to re-establish itself in the 4 corners region at the same time that a cut off low forms off of the California coast. A warming trend will begin Friday, and by Saturday temperatures look to rebound back to above normal levels. Dry conditions will continue. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at all TAF sites through Monday afternoon. There will be periods of high clouds with west to southwest breezes on Monday afternoon. && .FIRE WEATHER...On Monday, winds gradually increase and become breezy. Condtions will also be very dry to extremely dry as SW flow will downslope off the Sierra creating low to mid single digit RHs. This will worsen as we head into Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with Wednesday appearing to be the strongest wind day. Based on this conditions and model agreement, issued a Fire Weather Watch. This will be an interesting time as strong SW flow aloft will keep the mid and upper sloped well mixed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Very poor RH recoveries and gusty winds may persist all night, with the exception of deep/sheltered valleys. This is why the current watch us pulled through the night. By Thursday, weather system moves through the region. This will push the axis of strongest winds into FWZ 455, however confidence is too low to issue a Fire Weather Watch. This will be watched closely as trends suggest a watch will eventually be needed. Something to take note of...if a fire starts, expect RH values as low as 2 percent with widespread single digits across the majority of the reigon. In addition,m winds will be gusty and persist well into the evening and overnight. Very poor RH recoveries are possible.
