Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 1114 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday) Issued at 309 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 A mild and dry Christmas Day is on tap for western and north central Nebraska. Upper level ridging aloft will build northward across the area today in response to a digging TROF along the west coast into the desert southwest. Some increase in mid and high level clouds can be expected across the area ahead of the system. Highs by this afternoon should reach the upper 30s to mid 40s. Winds will be light, gradually shifting around to the east northeast The post-Christmas winter storm appears to be on-track for western and north central Nebraska. The system is just moving onshore the west coast tonight. It was sampled well in tonights upper air sounding data and all models seem to be converging on a solution. The NAM and GFS which had been too weak and disorganized have trended toward the stronger, farther west and negatively tilted ECMWF. What this means for our immediate area of western and north central Nebraska will be some light mixed precipitation late tonight and during the day Wednesday. This will be followed by snow, possibly heavy, Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Breaking it down, moisture transport and isentropic lift will be underway by late this afternoon. This can be seen at virtually all levels. This will lead to an increase in clouds, but no precipitation will occur during the day today. Moisture transport and isentropic upglide increase further tonight into Wednesday. This will lead to the development of scattered light precipitation after midnight continuing into Wednesday morning. Low clouds and possible advection fog will also develop. Sounding profiles continue to show that some light freezing rain or freezing drizzle could occur until about midday Wednesday, then temperatures at the surface warm above freezing during the afternoon hours. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 309 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 The system will begin to emerge onto the plains Wednesday night and move northeast across the region Thursday. Models have converged on a track...and the track is favorable for a moist wrap-around/TROWAL to bring a swath of heavy snow to much of western and north central Nebraska. Amounts of 6-10" appear likely in a band centered from near Springview southwest through Ogallala. This is a slight shift west of the previous forecast. Across the Panhandle and portions of far southwest and central Nebraska 2-5" is possible. These amounts combined with gusty north winds will likely cause travel difficulties Wednesday night through much of the day Thursday. The current Winter Storm Watch looks good and will not make any changes. Cold in the wake of the system for Friday and Saturday, with highs about 15 to 20 degrees below average. Then a Chinook type event should really help temperatures recover Sunday, with highs reaching into the 30s. A cold front from Canada then knocks highs back into the 20s by Tuesday. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1114 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 VFR conditions are expected to continue through 00z across the area. After 00z conditions will begin to deteriorate across the area as a strong winter storm begins to track into the area. This will bring precipitation into the area and MVFR to IFR conditions to both terminals through the end of the forecast period. Some light freezing rain could develop late tonight. This could create some slick spots on untreated surfaces. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY. A strong winter storm will impact the central plains early Wednesday morning through Thursday night. Rain, snow, blowing snow, and freezing rain will all be possible. The greatest potential for accumulating snowfall will occur late Wednesday through Thursday. Gusty northerly winds will allow for some blowing snow and reductions in visibility on Thursday. The greatest potential of a wintery mix of light freezing rain and snow will be Wednesday morning. Those planning post Christmas travel across western and north central Nebraska should prepare for hazardous travel conditions beginning late tonight and last through Thursday.
