Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 1131 AM CST Thu Nov 29 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 329 AM CST Thu Nov 29 2018 A weak disturbance will trigger some light snow and rain showers across portions of southwest and central Nebraska through the Thursday morning hours. Minimal snow accumulations are expected before precipitation changes over to all rain shortly after sunrise. Precipitation is expected to move east and diminish Thursday afternoon. A brief dry period is anticipated on Thursday evening before the next system approaches from the west. Precipitation from the next system will arrive across the northwest Sandhills as early as 1 AM CST before spreading east and south across the rest of the forecast area. For temperatures...despite plenty of clouds on Thursday, highs will rise into the mid to upper 40s for most locations. Thursday low temperatures will eventually drop into the mid to upper 20s. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 329 AM CST Thu Nov 29 2018 Models continue to advertise a deep cold upper trough moving into the Central Plains Friday into the weekend. As the upper trough emerges later Friday it will become negatively tilted. The GFS and NAM seem too far north with the H5 low center tracking across Nebraska. Prefer the deeper, farther south ECMWF, UKMET and GFSFV3. Jet dynamics would tend to support a deeper, farther south solution. Discussed with WPC, and they agree, with the ECMWF ensemble mean supporting a deeper southern track. This track and the negative tilt will allow Gulf moisture to advect northwestward from the Southern Plains into the Western High Plains Friday into Friday night. Moisture transport and deep isentropic upglide ramp up Friday evening and should result in precipitation development across most of western and north central Nebraska. This should mostly be in the form of snow as dynamic cooling processes begin to take hold. By Saturday morning the upper trough closes off across north central Kansas, and then moves very slowly northeast into southeast Nebraska by Saturday afternoon. Saturday night it will shift eastward slightly into southwest Iowa, where it nearly stalls as a 150 kt jet rounds the base of the trough across the southern Rockies into the Southern Plains. During this time a surface low will deepen to near 985 mb, and will track from eastern Kansas Saturday morning to southern Iowa Sunday morning. The slowing of the system will allow the cold moist conveyor to wrap back west into western and north central Nebraska, with the potential for heavy snow developing across portions of the area. This continues to seem most likely across northern Nebraska, where a Winter Storm Watch is in effect. It does appear though that decent accumulations could occur all the way south to near the I-80 corridor. After coordination with surrounding offices, have expanded the watch some to the south and west of the original issuance. Will not go all the way south to I-80 corridor at this time, as confidence decreases significantly in these areas regarding significant snow accumulation. Winds during this time will increase from the north, with 850 mb speeds expected to be around 40 kt. A fairly significant surface pressure gradient will occur across the our area due to the deep nature of the surface low. The lack of strong high pressure building southeast behind the system will keep the gradient from becoming overly tight. Nevertheless, with such a deep surface low, wind gusts of over 25 mph are expected. This could lead to some blowing and drifting snow later Saturday. Cold temperatures are expected the first half of next week in the wake of the system as cold air spills south into the region from Canada. Mainly dry conditions are expected after Monday as northwest flow aloft develops. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 1131 AM CST Thu Nov 29 2018 An area of rain showers will continue to move east across the southern Sandhills this afternoon, affecting terminals KLBF and KBBW. Brief drops in cigs to MVFR are possible, but VFR will be predominant. A transition to southeast winds tonight will draw more moisture into the region. Cigs will gradually lower overnight while fog develops, particularly across southwest and central Nebraska.
