.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 241 PM CST Fri Dec 28 2018

A highly amplified pattern was present across the CONUS
and Canada this morning. Across the CONUS, a trough of low pressure
extended from the Arrowhead of Minnesota southwest into
northeastern, then western Nebraska. Southwest of this feature, a
closed low was present over northern Arizona. High pressure was
located northeast of the Bahamas with a ridge extending north into
New England. A second ridge extended from the eastern Pacific into
the Alaskan Panhandle and northern British Columbia. At the surface:
High pressure was located over west central South Dakota. Across
western and north central Nebraska, northwesterly winds were present
with speeds ranging from around 10 MPH in the west to around 25 mph
in the central and east. Skies had begun to clear in the central and
east this afternoon with clear skies present in the west.
Temperatures were cold with 2 PM CST readings ranging from 11 at
O'Neill to 24 at Ogallala.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday night)

Winds will subside this evening as
high pressure builds into northeastern Nebraska. A reinforcing shot
of arctic air will accompany the high with some of the coldest
readings seen so far this winter. With fresh snowcover across most
of the area went with the coolest guidance (EC) and utilized this
for the min forecast tonight. High pressure will build south
southeast into the Ozarks on Saturday. Winds will shift to the south
and southwest across the forecast area with warmer air pushing into
the region. Temps will struggle to reach the freezing mark in snow
covered areas, while in the far southwest, readings will push into
the mid to upper 30s. Low pressure will develop in the Canadian
Rockies Saturday and will approach northeastern Montana by Sunday
morning. Winds will shift around to the west overnight as warmer H85
air pushes into the region. Winds will be light in the evening so
lows will probably occur in the late evening to early overnight
hours with readings mainly in the teens expected.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

The before mentioned low, will track from
nern Montana into the Dakotas on Sunday forcing a warm front through
the area early in the day with a cold front approaching the
northwestern forecast area late afternoon Sunday. This front will
push into the forecast area with bitterly cold temperatures expected
for Sunday night into Monday night. By Tuesday morning, wind chills
of -10 to -20 are possible. In addition to cold temperatures behind
the front, a nice area of mid level frontogenesis will spread from
eastern Wyoming into west central and northern Nebraska Sunday night
into early Monday morning. Inherited forecast had a mention of
freezing rain Sunday night and have scaled that down freezing
drizzle. ATTM, based on the latest BUFKIT soundings and NAM12 grid
forecast, it appears the threat for freezing drizzle is there as the
arctic front tracks across the forecast area Sunday night. For what
its worth, the GFS solution is more aggressive with the cold air
surge Sunday night, and is not indicating much of a freezing drizzle
threat. As mentioned earlier, bitterly cold air will push into the
region Monday and Tuesday behind the arctic front. Highs Monday will
be in the teens to around 20 with Tuesday's highs ranging from the
lower teens in the east to the lower 20s in the southwest. The
arctic airmass will transition east Wednesday as low amplitude
ridging builds into the west, then central plains Thursday into
Friday. After highs in the 30s Wednesday, 40s are expected for
Thursday and Friday.
