Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 255 PM EST Wed Jan 24 2018 .DISCUSSION... .CURRENTLY... Under variably cloudy skies and mainly northeast winds of around 10 mph, temperatures are in the lower to mid 70s along the Florida Keys. Meanwhile, local radars are only detecting a few patches of sprinkles on the outer waters beyond 20 nm southeast of the Middle Keys. Surface wise, a trough of low pressure is aligned about 20 to 30 nm southeast of the island chain, with an expansive continental ridge of high pressure extending from the south central United States and across the entire Gulf of Mexico and the Florida peninsula. On our marine district, winds vary from calm at Long Key Light to 12 and 13 knots at Pulaski Shoal Light and Molasses Reef Light respectively. && .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Saturday) A large region of high pressure centered over eastern Texas and Louisiana will migrate swiftly eastward and intensify over the extreme southeast United States and the Carolinas over the next couple of days. Because of a progressive and zonal movement throughout the troposphere, mid and upper level ascent will remain well north of our county warning area while the frontal boundary over south Florida loses its identity tonight. In addition, the trough in the Straits of Florida will be pressed southward and away from the Florida keys. However, low level confluence within an increasing, albeit shallow north to northeast trajectory will prompt 20 percent pops from the Reef Tract northward and 30 percent pops in the Florida Straits. Thereafter, increasing low level moisture flux and confluence combined with an eroding stable layer near 700 mb will warrant a gradual increase in pops through the period. High temperatures will range from the lower 70s on Thursday to the upper 70s on Saturday. Lows will vary from the mid 60s tonight and Thursday night to near 70 degrees Saturday morning. And finally, breezy to windy conditions can be expected through the period. && .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday) The persistent western Atlantic ridge axis lying across the Florida peninsula will likely retreat well eastward, as a cold front races eastward through the Gulf of Mexico. Medium range guidance is in fairly good agreement with the cold front passing through our region on Monday with cooler and drier air to follow well into next week. But until then, low level confluence and minor large scale ascent will prompt medium range chance pops to be retained until at least Sunday morning, before only dime pops will be inserted beginning Sunday night. Above normal temperatures will return to average with daytime highs generally in the mid 70s and overnight lows in the mid 60s. && .MARINE... A substantial, albeit gradual wind surge from west to east will overspread our marine district by early Thursday morning and persist for the balance of this week and into the weekend. Subsequently, a Small Craft Advisory will be inserted for all Keys coastal waters except Florida Bay. && .AVIATION... Tonight: VFR conditions return to both the KEYW and KMTH island terminals. Short lived MVFR cigs will be after 0600Z. Surface winds from 030 degrees will average 10-13 knots thru 02 or 03Z then increase to between 15-17 knots with gusts over 25 knots. && .CLIMATE...
