Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 928 AM EDT Fri Oct 5 2018 .DISCUSSION...In the middle and upper levels(700-200 mb), latest available satellite imagery overlaid with model streamline analysis as of 900 am, depicts the center of an expansive deep and warm regional scale anticyclone centered over the Upstate of South Carolina. At the surface, 1020 mb plus surface ridging is in place from Central Alabama to east of Savannah Georgia. Across the tropics, broad low pressure is over the Northwestern Caribbean Sea just off the Nicaraguan/Honduran Coasts. Tropical Storm Leslie remains no threat to the Keys over the West Central/Northwest Atlantic well to the northeast of Bermuda attm. As such, the 12Z sounding at Key West illustrated a decent MSLP gradient with fresh northeast to east breezes from just off of the surface up to 400 mb, with a moderately moist lower to mid troposphere and columnar PWAT ~ 1.76 inches. .CURRENTLY...As of 800 am, skies are mostly sunny across the islands and surrounding waters. Radar detects only isolated showers attm, with most of the activity across the Western Florida Straits. Since these are moving at approx 20 knots, they are capable of delivering some gusts around 30 knots. Temperatures across the islands are in the lower 80s with dewpoints in the lower to mid 70s. An ascat pass late last evening indicated solid 20 knotters encompassing much of the Florida Straits. C-man stations along the Florida Reef as well as around Smith Shoal Light are registering east to southeast winds between 15 and 20 knots with gusts between 20 and 25 knots. .SHORT TERM...Rest of today and this evening, deep 590 dm plus ridging will migrate to Eastern North Carolina by days end. At the surface and in the lower levels, the combination of the aforementioned developing broad area of low pressure in the Western Caribbean and surface ridge axis across Northern Florida, will result in near breezy to breezy conditions across the islands and surrounding waters. Forecast soundings drop PWAT from near 1.50 inches thru the day to near 1.00 inches by sunset, as drier air mixes down even moreso this morning. And given that guidance is a couple knots too low like in the last several day, a minor update will performed to raise winds and lower pops. Other than that everything is on track. && .MARINE...Thru this afternoon, given above synoptic scenario and some ship observations as well as at Smith Shoal Light, an SCA will be hoisted for the Florida Straits, Hawk Channel, and possibly GMZ033-034, which is the Dry Tortugas and and the Offshore Gulf waters 20 to 60 nm west of Mainland Monroe County.
