AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Jackson KY 1255 PM EST Sat Dec 8 2018 .UPDATE... Issued at 1036 AM EST SAT DEC 8 2018 Continuing to monitor radar trends as this system moves closer to the region. OHX had fair robust returns on radar this morning with reports of wintry mix of snow, light snow and drizzle. As the sun began to rise, however, returns really started to dwindle and significant drying looked to have taken place. Models are not having a good handle with this, but it does look like things are starting to build back in during the late morning hours. Continuing to monitor this to see which models are initializing the best, especially as the 12Z runs start to filter in. It is noted that the 12Z GFS does seem less robust than the 6Z run, but it is warmer. That being said, the warmth seems overdone, with the soundings not really supporting it...they don't show much of a warm nose above 0C. Will wait and see how the new GFS and ECMWF come in to get some more validation. Otherwise, left the forecast the same for now. Did update the near term grids with the latest observations to make sure the current conditions were reflected in the forecast. All updates have been published and sent to NDFD/web. UPDATE Issued at 652 AM EST SAT DEC 8 2018 An extensive area of rain is developing to our southwest this morning. A few reports a few flakes at the onset, but for the most part, primarily seeing rain or freezing rain at this point. 06z HRRR did come in with mainly rain for our valleys based on thicknesses, with only some snow on the highest ridgetops in Bell, Harlan, and Letcher counties tonight into Sunday. 06z GFS is also showing a mainly rain event based on thicknesses as well. 06z NAM continues to be the most aggressive with the snow, but likely is seeing some dynamic cooling taking place due to the heavier precipitation amounts. The precipitation rates may be key tonight on whether we stay rain, or go over to all snow. Either way, not enough supportive evidence to make any changes based on the 06z data at this point. Its also worth noting, we didn't get as cold overnight as expected as high clouds and northeast winds help to keep temperatures up overnight. The warmer temperatures could potentially support the more rain/freezing rain scenario tonight. There is a nice gradient in dewpoints setting up across southeast Kentucky and could be an early indication of where the northern edge of precipitation could eventually set up later tonight. This will be watched through the day today to see where this dewpoint gradient ultimately resides. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday) Issued at 342 AM EST SAT DEC 8 2018 Water vapor imagery this morning shows a nicely developed vort max over west Texas with a warm conveyor belt extending northward from Mexico into Oklahoma, wrapping in around the vort center. At the surface, A strong area of high pressure over the northern plains is providing very dry east to northeast low level flow across east Kentucky. Dewpoints have been falling through the teens this morning. As the vort max moves east today, a low pressure center will develop over the lower Mississippi river valley and track east tonight into tomorrow. A deformation zone will set up over Tennessee late this afternoon into tonight, and slowly pivot northward into south central and southeast Kentucky tonight. This deformation could align with an upper level TROWAL leading to some modest precipitation rates late tonight into early Sunday morning within this deformation zone. The big question is exactly how far north and how does the thermal structures align late tonight into tomorrow. The 00z NAM and 00z GFS were in pretty good agreement with one another, while the Canadian and ECMWF were a bit farther north with the precipitation. The hi-res model guidance ARW, NMM, HRRR, and RAP all support a solution similar to the NAM/GFS. Thus, believe the ECMWF and Canadian may be not accounting for an expected tighter gradient to the precipitation given the dry air on the north side of this system. Thus, opted to side more with the Hi-res model guidance/NAM/GFS. Still some concern with the warm nose as it pokes in late tonight and could lead to some pockets of freezing rain or rain (pending surface temperatures). This would cut into potential snow amounts. In fact, more rain is a distinct possibility. Overall the trend for less snowfall has continued, especially with the expected heavy, wet nature of the snow. It may be hard to reach 3 or 4 inches without a longer period of snow or more liquid equivalent. Thus, at this point, best confidence is to go ahead with a winter weather advisory and address the freezing rain and snow potential together. With the best threat being across the southeastern 2 tiers of counties bordering Tennessee and Virginia, will go with these areas in the advisory. Will leave a northern tier of counties from this area in a highlighted HWO area due to some uncertainty. Farther, north, no impacts are expected from this storm. There remains quite a bit of uncertainty with this event, and it is possible an upgrade for a few counties might be needed. However, at this time confidence is not high enough to go with any warnings. Precipitation will wind down during the day Sunday with a loss of ice possible in the clouds. This could lead to some light freezing rain or drizzle develop for places in the higher terrain where temperatures stay below freezing on Sunday. Areas below 2000 feet should warm well above freezing on Sunday with the impacts from the early day snow diminishing into the early afternoon hours. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday) Issued at 415 AM EST SAT DEC 8 2018 the period is expected to begin with a shortwave trough pushing south and east of the area with associated surface low pressure moving further east off the coast of the Carolinas. This shortwave trough and a closed low upstream over the Central Plains are expected to be moving through a trough over the Central and Eastern Conus in a split flow regime. Upper ridging meanwhile should extend into the Rockies at that point while an upper trough will be approaching the west coast of the Conus. At the surface, high pressure is expected to be centered over the Central Plains to start the period. Sunday night into Monday, the closed low initially in the Plains should weaken and probably become an open wave as it tracks toward the northern Gulf Coast states. At the same time, the surface low that will affect the near term will move further off the eastern seaboard while the lead shortwave departs to the south and east with any lingering precipitation ending early on Sunday night. Also, surface high pressure will build into the mid and lower MS Valley and OH Valley Sunday night into Monday with a drier airmass settling into the region. This should set the stage for a rather cold night on Monday night. Upper level ridging should move east across the Central and into the eastern Conus through midweek with the axis of this ridge moving east of East KY by late Wed. Meanwhile a trough will work across the western Conus and approach the Plains by midweek. The model consensus is for a lead shortwave to pass northwest of the are late Wed into Wed night. Then, as the trough continues to work from the western Conus into the Plains and central Conus, the model consensus remains for a closed low to develop over the southern Plains by Thursday and then approach the area at the end of the period in tandem with the associated surface low pressure system. Model agreement is for an unsettled second half of the week. Generally chance to likely pops were used at this point, rather than the Superblend categorical pops due to some timing uncertainties from run to run and model to model. The period will being with below temperatures, but highs should moderate through midweek. The airmass will be on the dry side and expected dewpoints and coop model guidance support some low temps on Mon night and Tue night possibly into the upper teens for the normally colder valley locations. As the region gets into return flow at midweek and in advance of the next low pressure system by Wed night into Friday, above normal temperatures are expected. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon) ISSUED AT 1255 PM EST SAT DEC 8 2018 VFR conditions and winds less than 10 kts are expected through this evening. An approaching storm system will bring lowering CIGS from south to north tonight, with all TAF sites except for KSYM expected to be MVFR by daybreak or just after. MVFR conditions will continue through the remainder of the forecast. Precip will accompany the increased cloud cover. This will mainly affect the southern most TAF sites including KSME and KLOZ, but could push as far north as KJKL and KSJS. The precipitation will fall likely in the form of snow, with the possibility of other wintry precip mixing in throughout the period. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty with this system, especially concerning the weather types and timing.
