AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Jackson KY 832 AM EDT Sun Mar 11 2018 .UPDATE... Issued at 832 AM EDT SUN MAR 11 2018 Satellite imagery shows clouds a little more prevalent than was forecast this morning, and the forecast was adjusted for this. Otherwise, the only changes involve blending early morning obs into the forecast. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday) Issued at 534 AM EDT SUN MAR 11 2018 It's another night of difficult forecasts. Considering the time frame in which the next system is expected to affect the area, the models are not in very good agreement. The challenges involve placement of the heaviest precipitation and temperatures when it falls. A shortwave trough currently along the NE/MO border will move to the Tennessee Valley by early Monday morning, and then to the Carolinas by tomorrow evening. It will prompt a surface low to track from east TX early this morning to northeast TN by late tonight. By that time, coast development will be taking over further to the southeast. The shortwave will provide dynamic lift, which combined with low to mid level frontogenetic forcing, will likely result in a fairly intense band of precip moving through KY. Surface cooling will occur during this time, with the drop below freezing being critical as to how much snow can accumulate. At this time, it looks like the heaviest precip combined with cold temperatures will come together over central KY. Over the JKL forecast area, the precip which occurs after a drop below freezing is supportive of advisory criteria snow across all but the extreme northern and southern portions of the area. Warm ground heading into the event will also hinder accumulation. Toward the end of the event as moisture become more shallow, ice production aloft may be lost, and a bit of freezing drizzle or light freezing rain could result. However, any amounts should be negligible. Any significant precip lingering into Monday morning should taper off as support is lost. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 339 AM EDT SUN MAR 11 2018 The extended portion of the forecast begins on Monday night with an overall active upper level pattern in place. With a developing coastal system tracking up the east coast, northwest flow will develop over the OH Valley. In this pattern numerous disturbances will track southeast across the Great Lakes into eastern Kentucky. Temperatures during the through this period will be too warm for all snow so rain showers will be expected through the day and snow showers likely during the nighttime hours. This pattern will likely persist for Tuesday and Wednesday. Model soundings indicate decent instability for an upslope event but due to the warmer temps any snow that falls overnight will likely quickly melt as it hits the surface. Snow may cause some visibility issues but that will be about the only impact. By Thursday, high pressure anchors over the southeastern CONUS with a persistent ridge axis nudging north into the OH Valley keeping eastern Kentucky dry for Thursday. On Friday another wave pushes east into the area along a boundary extending from a developing low pressure system in the Central Plains. This shot of moisture will be the beginning of precip as the mentioned low in the west develops and shifts east bringing a larger swath of moisture into the region for Friday night and into Saturday evening. While weak at this point, the model soundings do show some instability. Models do seem to lack some consistency but a mention of thunder may be needed in future issuances of the HWO. Especially if the soundings show any increased instability. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) ISSUED AT 832 AM EDT SUN MAR 11 2018 Conditions over the norther part of the area were VFR to start the period, while the remainder of the area showed a wide range from LIFR to VFR. The low clouds causing the poor conditions should break up this morning, giving way to unrestricted conditions everywhere for a time. By late in the day ceilings should begin lowering again from south to north, with MVFR or worse arriving area wide by late tonight. Precipitation will also be developing over most of the area.
