...ARCTIC AIR PLUNGES INTO OUR REGION TO BEGIN 2018...
...WIND CHILL ADVISORY FOR MOST OF OUR REGION TONIGHT...
...FROZEN PRECIPITATION POSSIBLE ON WEDNESDAY...

.CURRENTLY...
Early New Year's morning surface analysis depicts an arctic dome
of high pressure (1050 millibars) centered over the Plains states.
A weak low pressure wave situated along the arctic cold front was
pushing southeastward across central Florida. Aloft...a broad
trough extends from the Canadian Prairies to New England, with
mostly zonal flow in place locally. A weak shortwave trough was
embedded in the zonal flow and was progressing across the Florida
peninsula. Meanwhile, a potent shortwave trough was digging
southeastward and was crossing the Canadian border into eastern
Montana. Isentropic lift associated with the weak shortwave trough
and wave of low pressure to our south is generating a batch of
light to moderate rainfall along the Interstate 10 and 75
corridors, with low stratus ceilings and patches of drizzle
covering all but our north central Florida counties as of 10Z. Our
local pressure gradient is rapidly tightening over coastal
southeast Georgia, where gusty north-northeasterly winds are in
place and are about to cross into northeast Florida. Cold air
advection is driving temperatures and dewpoints down into the 30s
across all of southeast Georgia, with 40s for northeast Florida
and lower 50s for north central Florida.

.NEAR TERM /TODAY AND TONIGHT/...
Isentropic lift along the I-10 corridor will gradually shift
southward later this morning as the arctic dome of high pressure
continues to expand southeastward from the Plains states. The
surge of north-northeasterly winds will overspread the northeast
Florida coast by late morning, with breezy to near windy
conditions prevailing this afternoon and tonight, with gusts to
near 35 mph at times for locations east of I-95. Breezy northerly
winds will advect arctic air into our region today, with
temperatures not rising appreciably even as cloud cover thins from
north to south during the mid to late afternoon. Drizzle will exit
southeast Georgia by the mid morning hours, but pockets of light
rain and drizzle may persist into the afternoon hours over
Flagler, St. Johns, Marion and Putnam counties. Temperatures this
afternoon will generally be in the 40-45 range with wind chill
values in the 30s for locations north of a Gainesville to St.
Augustine line, with 45-50 degrees for locations south of this
line.

Skies will clear over southeast Georgia and the Suwannee Valley
tonight and will at least partially clear for the rest of inland
northeast Florida. Low stratus ceilings will be slow to budge from
St. Augustine to Ocala and points southeastward as low level winds
begin to veer to a northeasterly direction. Breezy to near windy
conditions will prevail at the coast, with speeds remaining around
10 mph through the night at inland locations, except around 15 mph
in north central Florida. These winds will combine with the arctic
air mass advecting into our region to create low wind chills of
15-25 degrees beginning around midnight. A Wind Chill Advisory has
been posted for all counties except Flagler County. Temperatures
will fall below freezing by the late evening hours over inland
southeast Georgia and the Suwannee Valley, with the season's first
long duration hard freeze overnight into Tuesday morning. Lows in
these locations will fall to the low to mid 20s. The strong
north- northeast surface winds will make for a tricky temperature
forecast for locations further east, with lows likely remaining
just above hard freeze criteria overnight for coastal southeast
Georgia and Nassau County, FL, where a freeze warning is in
effect. A freeze warning is in effect for most of inland northeast
Florida and portions of north central Florida. Portions of
western Marion County will likely experience near freezing
temperatures by early morning on Tuesday, but confidence was too
low to include Marion in the freeze warning at this time. A few
pockets of light rain or drizzle will remain possible for
locations south of St. Augustine overnight, with lows in these
areas generally in the lower 40s and wind chills in the upper 20s
to lower 30s, or just above wind chill advisory criteria.

and highs only in the 40s and brisk NE winds around 15-20G25 mph
will continue wind chills in the 30s through the day. Some
isolated rainfall still possible along the NE FL coast from St
Johns County southward in the onshore flow.

Tuesday Night...Low pressure begins to develop over the Bahamas in
response to mid/upper level shortwave digging over the GOMEX. This
will begin to shift precip shield back onshore the NE FL coast and
into the St Johns River Basin towards morning. For now these
regions should remain above freezing and expecting mainly liquid
precip there while much further inland across SE GA and inland
North FL another Freeze/Hard Freeze is expected with lows ranging
from the middle 20s to lower 30s. Not quite as much wind as Monday
Night but N/NE winds at 5-10 mph inland and 10-20 mph along the
coast will continue the threat of wind chills in the upper teens
and 20s and wind chill advisories may need to posted once again.

Wednesday...Models in good agreement as mid-upper trof aloft
pushes across the Deep South and into SE GA/NE FL and this will
serve to deepen Bahamas Low pressure system and track it
northward. The phasing of these systems at the surface and aloft
will serve to enhance lift/moisture over the region. The diffs in
the models are mainly how much warm air overrides the cold airmass
already in place. The NAM/ECMWF are in agreement with a colder
scenario that would bring winter mix to inland NE FL and SE GA
with event starting as some Freezing Rain and mixing with
Rain/Sleet/Snow at times before changing back to just Rain/Snow
during the afternoon as the shortwave passes by and colder air
works in the lower levels and ends the event as all Snow in some
locations with some small accumulations possible along the I-10
corridor of NE FL northward through SE GA. The GFS run was much
warmer in the lower levels and somehow has enough warm air pushing
back northward to push Max Temps back into the upper 40s/lower 50s
area-wide and mostly a rainfall event. For now leaning towards the
colder solution and have kept Max temps topping out closer to 40
degrees and will likely be cooler than this as enhanced lift and
moisture falling into the colder/drier airmass with dewpoints in
the teens/20s will allow for evaporational cooling to keep temps
down with an entire mix of Rain/Mixed Pcpn over inland areas while
areas basically SE of a line from JAX to GNV through the St Johns
River Basin will likely change to all rain Wednesday while areas
across SE GA and inland North FL with North winds backing to the
N/NW through the day will keep mixed pcpn possible through the day
after starting as a period of possible freezing rain in the
morning as temps start out below freezing in many inland
locations.

Wednesday Night...Any mixed winter precipitation on the backside
of departing low pressure system will end very quickly during the
early evening hours with skies becoming clear and NW winds at
10-15G20-25 mph combining with widespread temps falling into the
middle/upper 20s inland and lower 30s coast will push wind chills
down into the teens/lower 20s once again and expect the need for
Wind Chill Advisories area-wide along with Hard Freeze/Freeze
headlines as well.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Cold High pressure over the Central US will slowly build towards
the Carolinas through the period. This will keep well below normal
temps and mainly clear skies in place from Thu-Sat with highs
only in the 40s and lows in the 20s each night with widespread
Freeze and/or Hard Freeze events expected by each morning. Onshore
flow will develop by the weekend and this will start a warming
trend with highs into the 50s by Sunday with partly cloudy skies.

.AVIATION...
LIFR/IFR ceilings of 400-700 feet through at least 14Z at the
regional terminals. Light rainfall early this morning will
transition to drizzle by the mid-morning hours, with ceilings
slowly rising to MVFR by 19Z at SSI and 20Z at the Duval County
terminals and GNV. IFR ceilings will likely prevail through around
00Z at SGJ. North-northeasterly sustained surface winds of 15-20
knots will prevail throughout the day and evening at SSI.
Northerly surface winds will strengthen at the Florida terminals
after 11Z, with sustained speeds increasing to around 15 knots.
Frequent gusts to 25-30 knots are expected this afternoon at the
regional terminals.

.MARINE...
Weak low pressure along an arctic cold front will push southeastward
across the Florida peninsula this morning. A dome of arctic high
pressure will expand into the southeastern U.S. today, resulting
in a rapid tightening of our local pressure gradient this morning.
North-northeasterly winds will rapidly strengthen this morning
over the Georgia coastal waters, with Small Craft Advisory
conditions expected early this morning and then Gale Conditions
developing by late morning, with frequent gusts near 40 knots
possible this afternoon. Small Craft Advisory conditions will
overspread the Florida waters early this morning as north-
northeasterly winds strengthen to 20-25 knots, with Gale Force
winds arriving by mid-afternoon. Seas in the near shore waters
will build to 5-9 feet by this afternoon, with offshore seas
building to 7-12 feet later today. This very tight pressure
gradient will persist through at least Tuesday afternoon, with
Gale Warnings through early Tuesday afternoon for the Georgia
waters and through early Tuesday evening for the northeast Florida
waters. Low pressure will develop on Tuesday night over the
northern Bahamas and will accelerate northward off the U.S.
eastern seaboard while rapidly strengthening on Wednesday and
Thursday. Strong northerly winds will shift to northwesterly by
Wednesday afternoon, with Small Craft Advisory conditions
continuing through at least Thursday night on all waters.

Rip Currents: High risk at all area beaches through at least
Tuesday.

.HIGH SURF/COASTAL FLOODING...
Winds over the coastal waters will begin to veer to a
northeasterly direction overnight, which will begin to direct
higher surf towards the northeast Florida beaches. A high surf
advisory will likely be needed for the northeast Florida coastal
counties overnight through at least Tuesday night, with breakers
of 6-8 feet possible. Minor coastal flooding will be possible
during times of high tide beginning early on Tuesday morning, with
this possibility continuing through at least Tuesday night before
winds become offshore on Wednesday afternoon.

Temperatures over southeast Georgia continue to trend down into
the low to mid 30s early this morning. Drizzle is slowly exiting
the region, but there may be a period of light freezing drizzle
across portions of Glynn and Camden counties before the
precipitation ends. The main concern for motorists is the
potential for black ice to develop on elevated road surfaces and
bridges. Motorists traveling along the Interstate 95 and U.S.
Highway 301 corridors in southeast Georgia early this morning
should use extra caution as they traverse bridges and elevated
roadways. Ice accumulation is not expected in these locations
before precipitation ends before the mid-morning hours.
