Updated for 06Z aviation discussion && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF discussion: Overall a quiet TAF period is in store as the disturbance pulls away and all light snow chances have moved out of the area. VFR ceilings are expected through the TAF period with only passing high clouds. Expect the winds to gradually shift to around the south-southwest tomorrow around 5-8kts before lessening by the evening. Expect any lower ceilings to slowly move in tomorrow evening in north-northwest TAF sites in advance of an approaching cold front. /DC/ && .DISCUSSION... The upper disturbance managed to squeeze out quite a few flurries this afternoon and evening crossing the area. It also managed to spit some sleet the further south it pushed. The disturbance is now pushing east of the area though and through the rest of the night, the CWA should remain free of precip. No changes made to the overnight forecast. /10/ Prior discussion below: Tonight and Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Our cold pattern continues as the region remains situated under a large longwave trough. The surface high that has been also over us will shift east tonight, allowing southerly flow to slowly return to the region. Through the remainder of this afternoon and evening, a disturbance will continue to move across mostly northern and central portions of the forecast area. This will, at minimum, bring cloud cover back to the region. It might also squeeze out a few snow flurries across the north, but nothing of significance is expected. As this passes by, clouds will eventually clear from west to east in its wake tonight. This will help overnight lows drop back into the mid 20s. However, thanks to very very slight southerly flow/warm advection and the influence of any cloud cover, temperatures should not be as cold as they were last night. The coolest locations should likely be in the Delta, where temperatures have struggled to break the freezing mark today. arrive As southerly flow continues tomorrow, temperatures will actually be somewhat normal for this time of year. Highs will range from the upper 40s across the Highway 82 corridor to a somewhat balmy mid 50s across the Highway 84 corridor. Enjoy the warmer weather on Monday as our next round of cold weather from Old Man Winter will return for mid-week. /28/ Monday night into Tuesday: Tomorrow's warmup will be very short- lived as an Arctic cold front charges across the region tomorrow night, bringing temperatures similar to what was experienced at the beginning of the month. But first things first...light snow and possible snow accumulations Monday night into Tuesday. While at the surface the front will make headway across the area late Monday night into Tuesday morning, the upper level system will remain back to the north and west. Increasing mid/upper level forcing and a surge of scant but sufficient deep layer moisture just behind the front will provide the impetus for light snow to develop from the ArkLaTex through the ArkLaMiss Monday night, spreading southeastward through the daytime Tuesday across the remainder of the area. There is general model agreement in a decrease in QPF as the system moves southeastward across the area. Not surprisingly, the GFS is one of the drier solutions (a bias we have mentioned in recent discussions), showing very little or no QPF over the southern part of the area. Meanwhile, recent ensemble guidance cycles have consistently shown QPF persisting across the area, with greatest amounts still in the north and west. While for most areas any light precipitation will be in the form of snow, there remains some question about precip type across the south. Even there, forecast wetbulb profiles suggest once saturation occurs, snow would be the more likely p-type. Nevertheless, light rain or sleet at the beginning of precip is possible. For forecast snow amounts, we are sticking close to Euro ensemble means over much of the area, which matches closely with WPC guidance. SREF guidance is also trending upward as it often does in this time frame of the forecast, bringing as much as 1/2" down to the I-20 corridor. This forecast still keeps all areas below warning criteria, but bumps most of the Delta area up to between 1" and 2". It also expands the potential < 1" farther south and east. Though we didn't expand notable accumulations that far south, some guidance suggests light accumulations into the Pine Belt. Light snow may linger there into the early evening, but is expected to end before midnight. Unless expectations change considerably, a Winter Weather Advisory will most likely be issued for a portion of the area (especially the Delta and north/west areas) later tonight or early tomorrow. With this occurring in an increasingly cold airmass, accumulations on roads, and therefore, travel impacts, may be more likely. Snow may also have a chance to stick around a bit longer, causing some impacts to linger into Wednesday. Beefed up HWO/graphic wording a bit to account for increased snow amounts and increasing confidence in travel impacts. Wednesday through the remainder of the week: Though the threat for winter weather will end, concerns for dangerous cold will continue through the midweek period. This threat is particularly notable due to the weakened state of infrastructure following the Arctic outbreak earlier this month. Mostly sunny conditions will return Wednesday as the upper trough axis moves past the area. The combo of insolation and very dry air will help sublimate and/or melt lingering snow, even with very cold conditions (including temps remaining below freezing for many areas north of I-20). Continued cold advection and possibly some snow cover will help temps drop into the teens Tuesday night, then more favorable radiational cooling will likely allow them to do the same Wednesday night. With the a northerly breeze persisting on Tuesday night, wind chills will likely fall into the single digits. A Hard Freeze Warning and/or Wind Chill Advisory will likely eventually be needed for at least some portions of the area. To raise awareness and emphasize potential dangers to people, animals, and infrastructure from this cold wave, we have raised the threat category in HWO/graphics to significant over the northern half of the area. For the end of the week into the weekend, there is a continued trend toward a drier forecast, with a more stubborn surface ridge and the Gulf low pressure system taking a more southward track.
