.DISCUSSION...
A slow moving upper shortwave trough is in the process of closing
off into an upper low over the Southern Plains. Ahead of this
feature, southwesterly flow continues aloft above a strong cold
front that pushed through overnight. This front was located
southeast of the Jackson metro this morning with a brisk and
chilly northerly wind in its wake. Temperatures have and will
continue to drop through the day across the area as strong cold
air advection persists. Most locations have already seen their
high temperatre for the day this morning. A band of light rain is
also oriented across the I-59 corridor with areas of drizzle
extending back into the Jackson metro owing to isentropic ascent
and favorable jet dynamics overhead. Only made minor updates to
the ongoing forecast to tweak PoPs and hourly temperatures. While
outside of the current period of interest for this update, it is
worth mentioning that a limited risk for ice accumulation was
added earlier this morning to the HWO/graphics across portions of
the Delta and north central Mississippi for tomorrow morning
through evening. More details regarding this potential will be
available with the main forecast package this afternoon and a
winter weather advisory for a portion of the area is not entirely
out of the question and will be evaluated as additional 12z model
guidance becomes available. /TW/

Today through Tonight:

In the near term, the primary weather concerns will be for the
cold temperatures, and the threat for light wintry precipitation
developing toward daybreak Wednesday morning. By mid-November
standards, this is a remarkably cold airmass that is advecting
into the ArkLaMiss region, and it will bring the potential for
significant discomfort to those outdoors in the next few days. For
today, daytime temperatures will struggle to climb much, if any,
above morning readings which will range from the mid 30s to upper
40s, and cloudy skies combined with brisk northerly winds will
make it feel especially cold for those who are not dressed
appropriately. Daytime high temperatures will be up to 30 degrees
below normal for this time of the year.

For tonight, those same clouds will help to keep temperatures from
falling much, but enough decrease in cloud cover combined with
cold advection is expected to allow temperatures to fall below
freezing over the Delta region and we have issued a freeze warning
accordingly given that a solid freeze has yet to occur so far
this cool season for most of the area. Also, as has been discussed
in recent days, a threat for light wintry precipitation is still
on track to develop Wednesday morning when a shortwave trough
begins to close off and interact with the strong baroclinic zone
currently in place over the southeast CONUS. At this time we
expect the precip to not develop in earnest until after daybreak,
but given early morning temperatures near or just below freezing,
we'll be monitoring closely for signs of quicker development for
any accumulating precip. Some of the high-res guidance is more
aggressive in this manner, particularly the NAM, but have sided
with the more conservative global model consensus for now which
appears more realistic with initial precip in the cold airmass.

Tomorrow Night through Monday:

As the closed low deepens over the ArkLaTex during the day on
Wednesday, expect moisture to continue being lifted and wrapped
around the low. Looking at forecast soundings and isentropic maps,
the atmosphere is expected to saturate beneath the 700mb level,
with a general lack of upper-level moisture or strong enough
forcing to saturate the dendritic growth zone. Therefore, the
precipitation type is expected to remain a mix of light rain and
light freezing rain. The distinguishing characteristic between the
two areas will be wherever the low-level air mass can cool to -
and remain - below freezing. In general, this will favor better
chances for light freezing rain through southeast Arkansas, far
northeast Louisiana, and portions of Mississippi to the north and
west of the Natchez Trace. There may be a struggle to maintain
freezing temperatures as low-level stratus may still allow some
insolation and precipitation may mix down some of the elevated
warm layer. For now, the temp forecast is a compromise between the
coldest scenarios and various hi-res hourly guidance. If
saturation can extend deep enough closer to the core of the closed
low, there may also be the chance for some snow flurries or light
snow showers to mix in. So for areas north and west of the Natchez
Trace, there is also a mention of flurries included.

With surface temperatures somewhat uncertain and precipitation
rates expected to be light, we are currently forecasting no
accumulation of any freezing or frozen precipitation. Any
meaningful snowfall accumulations should remain north of our
forecast area - northern Arkansas and western Tennessee. We will
continue to evaluate the threat for any light ice accumulations
from freezing drizzle or freezing rain, but currently confidence
is low enough that no ice threat has been included in the
Hazardous Weather Outlook or graphics.

Confidence is much higher with regards to the freezing
temperatures spreading across our entire forecast area in the wake
of the system on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Most
locations will likely see low temperatures dip to the upper 20s by
early Thursday morning, and much of the area will see those
temperatures for several hours overnight. Therefore a Significant
threat for a freeze has been added to the Hazardous Weather
Outlook and graphics, with frost posing a threat to unprotected
sensitive vegetation.

A gradual warming trend beneath clearing skies will commence
through the end of the week, although temperatures will still be
on the cooler side of normal. As the cool surface high lifts north
and eastward, models hint that our next cold front may arrive in
the region sometime early next week. As of this time, it does not
look to bring significant chances for rain or cooler weather. /NF/

12Z TAF discussion:
-RA/-DZ will continue to slowly diminish this morning and
 visibility improve, but widespread IFR ceilings will remain for
 most of the day...slowly lifting to MVFR categories during the
 afternoon and evening at most sites. Some VFR conditions may even
 develop at GLH/GWO overnight, but this will be short-lived with
 the approach of the next system for Wed/Wed night. Otherwise,
 gusty northerly surface wind can be expected this forecast period
