Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jackson MS 928 PM CST Fri Mar 2 2018 .UPDATE... Updated for evening discussion. && .DISCUSSION... The forecast is on track with clear skies and light winds allowing for optimal cooling this evening. The threat for frost still exists over north central into east central MS where temperatures will dip well into the 30s prior to daybreak, so no change will be made to the HWO/graphic. /EC/ Prior discussion below: Tonight and Saturday: High pressure will continue to bring rather pleasant, although somewhat cool, conditions to the "Arklamiss" region through the next 24 hours. High pressure at the surface still building south through the Lower MS Valley currently will only slowly transition east of the region through tomorrow, at long last bringing all areas two days in a row of fine weather. The one caveat is seasonably chilly temperatures tonight will likely get far enough down into the 30s in much of north-central through east-central Mississippi to allow for patchy light frost late tonight through daybreak Saturday. Usually in early March this is no big deal. However, with the unusually early green up in February, there are more plants in situations susceptible to frost in early March than is typically the case. The HWO and graphics will continue to represent this threat to property. /BB/ Saturday Night through Friday: Although winds will be switching to come around out of the south on Saturday night, the axis of a surface high will extend across the forecast area while ridging continues aloft. Some clouds may increase in the west late in the night, but not before temperatures in some areas get down into the mid-30's. Will continue a Limited threat for patchy frost through Saturday night, mainly for the Golden Triangle and parts of eastern Mississippi. A low pressure system deepening over the Central High Plains on Sunday will then become our focus as it progresses eastward into early next week. There continue to be some slight differences among the models with regards to consolidating the upper-level energy as the system progresses toward the Great Lakes, but overall confidence has increased for the associated cold front to push through our forecast area Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Based on the current timing, there may be sufficient moisture and instability recovery ahead of the cold front to see some stronger to severe thunderstorms develop late Monday afternoon and evening. The system looks to be progressive, so there is lower concern for flash flooding. However where river and stream levels remain above normal, some additional flooding issues can't be ruled out with any heavier downpours. Cooler and drier air will work its way into the region behind the cold front, resulting in quieter weather for most of next week.
