Heavy rainfall will be transitioning to the east of the area through daybreak, but some precipitation will continue into the morning hours and the further rainfall will keep water levels from falling rapidly. In addition, rivers are starting to rise from all the recent rain and will continue to rise in many spots through the next few days. In short, just because rain is starting to let up you should be very cautious of flooded roadways and remember to turn around, don't drown. Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Jackson MS 1147 PM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 .UPDATE... Updated for 06Z aviation discussion && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF discussion: Most TAF sites will deal with some patchy fog reducing visibilities to MVFR overnight, otherwise intermittent VFR ceilings will periodically develop and move over. HBG and PIB will see denser fog develop in those area with IFR/LIFR conditions from 26/08Z to 26/14Z. Thereafter, conditions improve to VFR and stay as such at all TAF sites through the end of the period. Winds look to stay southeasterly at 5 to around 10 knots with gusts from 20 to 25 knots during the afternoon and continuing through the end of the period./26/ && .DISCUSSION... Expect isolated light rain showers tonight for mainly western and central portions of the area as a boundary lifts north through the region. Patchy fog will be possible later tonight across mainly southern portions of the area. Low temperatures will be in the mid 40s to lower 50s. No major changes were needed to the current forecast. /27/ Prior discussion below: Through Wednesday: The sun has been more plentiful that previously anticipated across much of the area this Christmas Day, allowing temperatures to soar through the 60s to near 70 in some areas. Meanwhile, clouds have persisted along the US 82 corridor, where temps remain in the 50s and upper 40s in North MS. The disturbance which sparked off isolated showers in these areas earlier today is now moving away toward the Mid-Atlantic coast. Tonight, a pseudo- warm front will develop across the area as our next storm system begins to take shape over the Southwestern states. As this subtle boundary lifts northward across the area, clouds will increase and a band of isolated/scattered showers will lift northward through the night. The greatest chances for very light rain amounts will be over the western half of the area. These showers are expected to lift north of our area by Wednesday morning. Patchy fog will be possible across Central LA and South MS around daybreak, but for now it appears considerable cloudiness will prevent fog from being widespread. Low level southeasterly flow will pick up through the day as the developing surface low deepens over West TX. By late afternoon and early evening, showers may begin to move into the MissLou region as deeper moisture and increasing lift advance into the region. In spite of the clouds, it should be relatively warm again with highs possibly touching 70 in a few areas. /DL/ Wednesday night through New Years Eve... An active weather pattern will take shape which should feature several rounds of rain and some storms. The first weather system to affect our region will begin to develop across the Southern Plains by Wednesday night. The upper ridging that has been over us will push off to the east as an upper trough digs across west Texas and New Mexico. A deepening area of low pressure will track across Kansas and Nebraska and toward the Upper Mississippi Valley region. Moisture will stream into the region ahead of this heading into Thursday with PW values increasing to around 1.6 inches by Thursday morning. Some showers could be ongoing by daybreak Thursday but the bulk of our expected weather will come later into the afternoon through Thursday night. A cold front will push into the region, with a line of storms ahead of it. Dewpoints are forecast to reach into the lower to mid 60s across the area, as well as vertical totals around 25-27C and sufficient low and deep layer wind shear. This would suggest potential for damaging winds and of course tornadoes. Going marginal risk is sufficient for the time being and will be continued. The other risk with this system will be from heavy rain and flooding potential, particularly in the east and southeast part of the forecast area. Ample moisture will be in place and with a slower moving system that appears to hang up in the east and southeast, this could bring potential for 2-4 inches of rain here. Elsewhere, 1-3 inches will be possible. Inherited limited and elevated risks appear fine but did expand the elevated risk just a little to the west. With strong ridging across the Atlantic, this front will hang up around our area and keep rain chances in the forecast, especially for locations along and south of I-20 through the remainder of the year. A few areas of low pressure look to develop along this stalled front which could bring rain to the entire area and potential for some stormy weather as well, particularly around the New Year.
