.SYNOPSIS...

Lighter lake effect snow showers will persist through Monday with
only minor additional accumulations expected. Bitterly cold
conditions will also continue through Tuesday with dangerous
nighttime wind chills dropping into the 15 below to 25 below
range. Some slight moderation in temperatures by late Tuesday but
another system dropping out of the Northern Plains will bring
another shot of cold air to the region along with renewed lake
effect snow showers for the second half of the work week.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Monday)
Issued at 404 PM EST Sun Dec 31 2017

Mesovort has moved inland this afternoon with single band now
working across northwest Indiana and extreme southwest Lower
Michigan. This circulation disrupted downstream banding across
the local area earlier this afternoon with much of the significant
lake effect now having largely exited Berrien county and limited
to far southern sections of the county. Primary single band will
continue to move inland through the late afternoon hours with best
accumulations anticipated across approximately northeast half of
La Porte county. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected
with this band, and given the passage of smaller scale vorts
embedded in the band helping to anchor it for a time before moving
east, could see localized 6+ inch amounts primarily across
extreme southwest Berrien and La Porte counties. The primary
concern with this particular event is not likely to be total
amounts, but rather the dramatic changes in conditions in and out
of the band notable with many lake effect events of this nature.
Dominant band will gradually shift eastward through early evening
with snowfall rates gradually diminishing with eastward extent
across St Joseph IN/Cass counties, but will keep winter weather
advisory up for these counties through the midnight EST period.
Lake effect snow showers will continue overnight into Monday but
lowering inversion heights, loss of deeper moisture, and west-
northwest nature to fetch should limit additional accums.

Other concern tonight will be wind chills. Skies have cleared across
many locations outside of lake effect clouds with main question this
evening on extent of decoupling. Strong anticyclone building across
the central US and remnant lake aggregate troughing should maintain
moderate pressure gradient across the area, and thus could see winds
saying up in the 5 to 10 mph range through most of the night. Did
go ahead and stay close to previously forecast mins from 5 below
to 12 below (warmer in single digits above zero near Lake
Michigan), but with these winds staying up overnight have some
concern that even areas across the north/northwest could flirt
with wind chill criteria. Did expand wind chill advisory to
include all of forecast area through Tuesday morning. For
locations that are more marginal across the north tonight, wind
chills should be more solidly in wind chill advisory range for
Monday night/Tuesday. Forecasted wind chills do get as cold as 25
to 30 below across the south tonight where lesser cloud cover is
anticipated, but given uncertainties in wind speeds and extent of
decoupling will hold off on any wind chill warning headlines at
this time and maintain mention of 15 to 25 below. Highs for Monday
will struggle through the single digits above zero, keeping wind
chills near advisory criteria through much of the day for portions
of the area.

.LONG TERM...(Monday Night through Sunday)

Some moderation in conditions expected by Tuesday as negative upper
height anomaly across eastern CONUS departs and mid/upper flow
temporarily loses some amplification in advance of next upstream
wave across the Northern Plains. Another shot of cold advection
is in store behind the passage of this upper trough for midweek
with another round of lake effect snow expected Wed-Fri. Did add
some low chances of light synoptic snow with the upper trough on
Wednesday per collaboration, but no significant snow is expected.
Guidance still depicts flow deamplification toward the end of the
period, with gradual retreat of colder air, but this may be
accompanied by increasing precip chances toward the end of the
period as a stronger advective forcing pattern takes shape.

Dominant band has shifted east of KSBN and southern extent will
graze KFWA with some flurries. Otherwise, NW flow will allow for
multiple bands of lighter snow showers at KSBN and maybe some
cloud cover (flurries?) as far SW as FWA. Will keep impacts
minimal with tempo at KSBN for MVFR Vsby/Cigs overnight. At KFWA,
IFR cigs should quickly improve to VFR, with chances for some MVFR
cigs this afternoon with lake effect cloud cover.
