...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS
AFTERNOON TO 7 AM EST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Lake effect snow expected. Travel will be very 
  difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute 
  on Thursday. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 13 inches 
  through Friday, with localized amounts up to 15 inches, are 
  expected.

* WHERE...Berrien County.

* WHEN...From 1 PM this afternoon to 7 AM EST Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow amounts will vary greatly from 
  location to location. Motorists should prepare for rapidly 
  changing conditions, with near zero visibility at times in the 
  heaviest bands.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for lake effect snow means lake effect
snow is forecast that will make travel difficult in some areas.

Issued at 244 PM EST Tue Jan 2 2018

Another night of bitter cold and dangerous wind chills as
temperatures drop below zero this evening. Wind chills of 10 to 20
below will persist through daybreak. Otherwise lake effect snow
showers will develop in earnest Wednesday afternoon in the wake of
another upper air disturbance crossing the Great Lakes. Lake effect
snow bands will intensify Wednesday night and persist through Friday
as another bout of arctic air floods the upper midwest and Ohio
valley.

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight and Wednesday)

Nrn stream clipper over SK this aftn will dig rapidly sewd this
period and phase with downstream wave along the gulf coast Wed aftn
and result in a very deep system blowing up through the wrn
Atlantic. Upstream flow aloft deepens substantially in response with
upper trough centered through the James valley. Thus long axis fetch
within renewed low level lake based thermal troughing will promote a
multi-day intense lake effect snow event.

Clear skies and some diurnal dropoff after sunset along with sw
gradient flow aoa 10kts warrants another wind chill advisory
overnight. Otherwise frontal based snow band in progress across MN
this aftn and is expected to blossom a bit more as it drops
se...crossing the cwa mainly late Wed morning through early aftn
with a dusting of snow likely. Thereafter deep nrly flow
trajectories down lake MI arise with vigorous plume development by
21-00Z. Based on clustered 12Z evolution/timing will bump prior
headlines forward in time given potential heavy snow rates not
expected until Wed aftn at the earliest.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

...Significant multi-day lake effect snow event late Wed-Fri...

Expected dipole banded lake effect matures late Wed night into Thu
morning timed with maximizing lake based thermal troughing. Best
parcel based thermal modification mid morning through mid evening
Thu and period of greatest concern given equilibrium heights nearing
10kft and substantial vertical motion. DGZ within the top of the
vertical motion plume initially Wed does favorably lower Thu and per
sfc-h85 theta-e lapse rates nearing -2 would suggest 2"/hr snowrates
likely especially within nrn portion of band collocated within best
parameter space overlap Thu. Typical of these events is primary
convergence oriented ern lake band near along/ern shoreline and
secondary band farther west. Ern most band is indicated in all
solutions along with some degree of additional entrainment of lake
Superior connection yet with significant location spread among
highres guidance. Additionally 30kts of mean cloud layer flow would
spread decent accumulation potential further inland than typical and
affect nrn portions of Kosciusko/Marshall and perhaps even into wrn
portions of Lagrange/Noble late Thu should ern most solution space
verify. Regardless general consensus warrants adding Elkhart county
in the very least but defer any further swd expansion or upgrades at
this time. Nonetheless blended aggregate qpf along with modified
snow ratios of 20-25:1 would spell 12-16" snow accums across
Berrien/Cass through Fri aftn and 6-12" nrn Laporte east through
Elkhart and perhaps 3-5" north of US 30 through nrn
Marshall/Kosciusko.

Thereafter bitterly cold pattern of late breaks briefly milder timed
with a breakdown of wrn NOAM upper ridge and ewd flat zonal flow.
This results in a period of strong sw flow aloft and dislodges
current arctic airmass in place with a run into the 30s likely Sun-
Mon followed by yet another renewed swd push of arctic air by Tue
and accompanying lake effect. Strong wrn ridge flattening sw trough
through the wrn US this weekend handled similarly in 12Z operational
solutions albeit with little run continuity and lackluster ensemble
support. General trend/look is for a more open/progressive solution
aloft tracking ewd across the lakes/OH valley Sun-Mon and more of a
snow event here locally outside more vigorous sfc frontal wave
development although srn zones could warm enough aloft for an icing
threat. Stay tuned.

Reasonably quiet weather for aviation concerns this TAF cycle.
Steady SW flow around 10kts through the period with VFR conditions
prevailing until Wednesday morning where VFR cigs move in with
approach of next system...becoming MVFR at KSBN before the end of
