Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 128 PM EDT Wed Apr 4 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 414 AM EDT Wed Apr 2 2018 Strong gusty west to northwest winds will be accompanied by snow showers this morning. Some light accumulations will be possible, mainly north of highway 30. Little change in temperatures is expected today with readings remaining in the 30s. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 414 AM EDT Wed Apr 4 2018 991 mb low, currently over southern Ontario, was raising havoc across the Great Lakes with colder air sweeping back in on west and eventually northwest winds. While snow is a concern, larger issue has materialized with regards to winds. Mixing of stronger winds occurred along and behind the cold front, but strong CAA was allowing the mixing to continue with several spots along and east of I-69 seeing sustained winds in the 25 to over 30 mph range and gusts to 45 mph (or even slightly higher). RAP/HRRR/LAV all point towards this continuing into the morning hours with some hints winds could pick up even more in the 10 to 13Z window. After collaboration, opted to hoist Wind Advisory until 15Z to handle the stronger winds. Outside the advisory area isolated criteria is still possible, but not consistent enough to warrant expansion to point further west. Deformation zone was wrapping around quickly with light snow overspreading the area. Will need to keep an eye on any banding over the next several hours as some areas of convergence noted across southern Lk MI and a decent band attempting to set up over LaPorte county. Have kept amounts on the light side, but could need changes if bands stay in place any length of time. Expanded pops through the whole CWA with most everyone seeing at least some snow flakes before all is said and done. Precip and winds will all begin to calm down into this afternoon and tonight as the low quickly moves away. && .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 414 AM EDT Wed Apr 4 2018 Series of waves still on track to at least make an attempt to bring additional precipitation chances. The first comes as early as Thursday afternoon, with better chances Thursday night as the system tracks across northern parts of the area. Should start as rain in the afternoon but then mix with and change to snow. Some indications that a stronger band of snow could take shape somewhere across the north with increased FG forcing. SREF plumes show an inch or 2 possible, but some members north of the 30 corridor do show higher amounts. At this point will stay the course and maintain chc to likely pops and defer to day shift to monitor model trends. Another system will quickly pass mainly south of the region Fri afternoon/evening to bring chance of rain or snow to southern areas. Plenty of cold air to be had with highs only in the 30s Friday and only slight improvement Saturday. Temperatures attempt to moderate into the 40s by Sunday and Monday ahead of yet another wave to bring WAA precip Sunday night into early Monday followed by more as low pressure passes by with rain changing to snow by Tues. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday Afternoon) Issued at 126 PM EDT Wed Apr 4 2018 (For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday Morning) Issued at 605 AM EDT Wed Apr 2 2018 Strong cold air advection continues to occur out of the northwest helping to keep the snow showers going during the early portion of the afternoon as an energetic disturbance moves away from the region. As dry air begins to work in during the early afternoon, expect snow showers to dissipate and any left over MVFR CIGs and VISBY to become VFR conditions. Today's gusty winds on the back of that energetic disturbance will relax early tonight and become more westerly tomorrow as high pressure nudges closer.
