Precipitation will end this evening but not before changing to
snow. Accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected over mainly the
tri-state region of northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio and
southwest lower Michigan. A period of dry and mild weather is
expected from Friday into Sunday night under high pressure before
rain and snow chances return next week along with colder
temperatures.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Friday)

Surface low deepening rapidly this afternoon as northern and
southern stream waves begin to phase. Strong northern stream jet
digging south with left front expected to enhance pcpn into this
evening before moisture finally pulls east. Deepening surface low
expected to slow and this will help pcpn linger through mid
evening in the far east. Thermal profiles cooling this afternoon
as colder air being pulled south and dynamic cooling leading to
changeover to wet snow with big flakes. Accums have been limited
so far with warm and wet ground but 2m temps falling to between 32
and 34 within heavier snow and some reports coming in of snow
beginning to accumulate. Latest hires trends and QPF suggest
amounts will be a bit lower overall in the northeast but still
possible to see 2 to 5 inches with the higher amounts in extreme
northeast where period of moderate to heavy snow before ending
after dark. No changes planned to headlines at this time.
Winds will also be increasing early this evening with tightening
sfc gradient in wake of sfc low. Momentum transfer with cold air
advection will also aid in a brief period of gusty winds,
especially in the east through early to mid evening. A few hours
with gusts to 35 knots expected but too brief a period to hoist an
advisory and will handle with an SPS as needed. Otherwise gradual
clearing should follow late tonight but combination of late
clearing and gradient winds should help keep temps from plummeting
over fresh snow cover.
Period of dry and quiet weather set to begin on Friday as high
pressure moves into the region. Highs will range from upper 30s in
northeast over snow field to middle 40s southwest.

High pressure remains over Great Lakes through Sunday with mild
temperatures and light winds. Will have to watch some fog or
stratus potential given weak wind field and melting snow but for
now staying with mostly clear skies and above normal temps.
Next system set to move in by Monday with initial warm air
advection and moisture bringing rain back to the area. Models in
decent agreement overall with upper low developing and becoming
slow moving over the Great Lakes with cooling temps. Should see
a few days with snow chances mid week and colder temps.
