Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 134 PM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 .UPDATE... The AVIATION Section has been updated below. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 323 AM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 The hottest air of the season is poised to expand into central Indiana late week into the weekend as a strong upper level ridge centers over the region. The ridge will shift west into early next week...enabling a frontal boundary to slip into the region from the north by late weekend. This will help to pull temperatures down slightly for the first half of next week while bringing better chances for scattered thunderstorms. && .NEAR TERM /Today/... Issued at 1024 AM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 The primary change made during this morning update is in regards to the afternoon max temp. Boosted the max a degree or so this afternoon as current temp trends were outpacing the forecast and MAVMOS guidance also agreed. The previous discussion follows... Issued at 323 AM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 Mainly clear skies over central Indiana early this morning as weak high pressure has built in from the north. Convection has been firing this morning along the remnant frontal boundary and instability gradient which resides from central Missouri southeast into western and southern Kentucky. Muggy this morning with 07Z temperatures ranging from the mid 60s to the lower 70s. The weak surface high will maintain dry weather over the forecast area today as upscale convective development will focus along the front which will remain to our southwest. Model soundings show a solid capping inversion which should only strengthen through the course of the day as warming commences aloft. Expect some diurnal cu formation with a lingering low level thermal trough over the region...but the cap should limit overall vertical extent. Temps...plenty of sunshine and moderating temperatures in the boundary layer support a return to warmer weather compared to the last few days. Low level thermals are supportive of the warmer MAVMOS with highs likely to top out in the upper 80s to lower 90s. It will be muggy today but presence of a north/northeast flow for much of the day will keep dewpoints from getting out of control. && .SHORT TERM /Tonight through Saturday Night/... Issued at 323 AM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 Forecast challenges focus squarely on the arrival of what is likely to be the most uncomfortable conditions of the summer so far through the period. Upper ridging centered over the southern Plains this morning will expand into the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes into the weekend with mid level heights likely to top out at or just above 595dam. With the frontal boundary currently over the lower Ohio Valley poised to surge back north through the region Friday into Saturday...the floodgates will be opened for the highest dewpoint air yet this year to advect into the region. Dewpoints are in the mid and upper 70s located just south of the frontal boundary from eastern Kansas into western Tennessee and those numbers seem quite reasonable as the front shifts back north into the region by Friday afternoon and into Saturday. The result will be a truly oppressive feel to the airmass for Friday and Saturday. With the core of the ridge building into the area...little to no forcing aloft...paltry BL shear and model soundings showing the capping inversion persisting...any threat for convection appears low at this point. That being said...with such strong diurnal heating both Friday and Saturday...instability levels approaching 5000 J/KG exist above the inversion. If any of this instability can be tapped...isolated slow moving strong storms would likely explode focused during the afternoon and evenings. The amount of instability present alone would suggest any storm would be a prolific lightning producer and would be capable of locally heavy rainfall. There appears to be a narrow window for convective development on Friday as a weakness develops over the area on the east side of the expanding ridge core. The NAMNest is the only model that appears to be capturing this idea...pulling a convective complex southeast into the region around the periphery of the ridge. Confidence in this occurring is very low to say the least considering the presence of such a strong cap...but it is a possibility to keep in the back of our minds going forward. The other spot where a few storms may develop is Saturday afternoon as the cap is actually weaker...but virtually no forcing aloft exists under the ridge core. Will continue with a dry forecast at this time with low confidence in any potential convection development. Temps...the story will be the heat and humidity through the period as 850mb temps rise to 21-23C by Saturday with 925mb temps at 27- 28C. This is fully supportive of widespread 90s both Friday and Saturday...with mid 90s likely present across the board Saturday. Dewpoints in the mid to possibly upper 70s will produce max heat indices over 100 both days and potentially pushing 110 on Saturday afternoon. Headlines in the form of a Heat Advisory are virtually certain to be needed for Friday and especially Saturday. With primary impacts still 24+ hours away...will hold off on any issuance this morning and focus via the HWO and an SPS. Lows will likely not fall any lower than the mid 70s over the weekend. && .LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/... Issued at 238 AM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 Ensembles in good agreement with the overall weather pattern during this period. Short wave troughing moving through the Great Lakes early next week will temporarily suppress the heat ridge somewhat, before it builds back into the area by the middle of next week. Ensembles indicate a front will approach the area from the northwest on Sunday, eventually settling across the area and gradually weakening with time. Long range operational models suggest the local area will reside along the eastern edge of the mid level cap during this period. Not sure cap will be strong enough to suppress potential for convective complexes given the high instability progged. Will keep chance PoPs going throughout the extended. && .AVIATION /Discussion for the 28/1800Z TAF Issuance/... Issued at 119 PM EDT Thu Jun 28 2018 VFR conditions are expected to persist through the TAF period. Diurnal CU at around 3500 feet are over most of the terminals at varying coverages. CU is expected to dissipate by 2300Z today. Surface winds remain light today and then push in from the south and southeast after 1200Z Friday at up to 8 to 10 knots. A couple model solutions depict the possibility for convection pushing near or into the western portions of central Indiana Friday morning after 29/0900Z as an upper level disturbance is forecast to ride the top of the upper ridge building over the area and push south-southeast into the area. Confidence in this scenario occurring is not currently very high...thus, it has been left out of this round of TAFs. && .IND WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
