Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 509 AM CDT Sun Mar 25 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 235 AM CDT Sun Mar 25 2018 A much quieter period is expected today and tonight, in wake of the recent late winter storm. Strong high pressure over Quebec will keep the dry easterly flow continuing. Snowfall over locations along and north of I-74 were largely in the 3 to 8 inch range with some locally higher totals. This wet snow has been compacting even during the night, as temperatures remain above freezing. However, the highs in this area have been kept well below MOS guidance today, to reflect the solar energy going toward melting. Further south, highs in the lower to mid 40s are more likely, perhaps approaching 50 in the far southeast. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) ISSUED AT 235 AM CDT Sun Mar 25 2018 Primary forecast concern remains with the developing storm system early in the week, specifically with rainfall totals. Latest NAM/GFS continue to show precipitable water values quickly increasing to around 1.4 inches Monday afternoon, and these stick around in the southeast CWA into Tuesday evening. The developing frontal boundary to our west will become oriented parallel to the upper flow, preventing a quick movement of the front. Periods of heavier showers and some embedded thunderstorms will be the result. Latest model blends increase the rain totals a bit, but continue to focus on an axis near I-70. See the Hydrology section below for more details. In terms of the timing, most of the model guidance is in good agreement with rain moving into the western CWA late Monday morning, and quickly becoming widespread. Categorical PoP's above 80% will continue ahead of the front well into Tuesday evening, tapering to scattered showers northwest of I-55 once the front passes. However, with the split jet stream over the central U.S. into mid week, the drying trend over the southeast CWA will be slower. Temperature-wise, the NAM is significantly faster with the front's passage on Tuesday, resulting in a fairly wide range in MOS guidance. Will be leaning toward the slower solutions, and thus highs close to 60 still look reasonable on Tuesday. Highs cool off a bit after that, but still remain close to normal for a couple days. By late week, a broad upper trough over central North America will result in a cooler trend, though not unreasonable for the end of March. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) Issued at 509 AM CDT Sun Mar 25 2018 VFR conditions expected through the period. Ceilings have risen to above 5,000 feet at all sites early this morning. While these lower ceilings will continue to move out, high clouds will move in to replace them. General easterly flow will continue, with gusty winds to around 20 knots over eastern Illinois through this afternoon. && .HYDROLOGY... Issued at 235 AM CDT Sun Mar 25 2018 Potential for river flooding is on the increase for early in the week. Latest model guidance continues to suggest 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain across a good portion of central and southeast Illinois Monday through early Wednesday, with the highest totals near the I-70 corridor. Much of the area received 1 to 2 inches of rain on Saturday. While the northern CWA received much of snow, radar and surface obs, plus analysis from NOHRSC (NOAA snow center near Minneapolis) show snow water equivalent values of 1 to 2 inches there as well. This snow will be melting quickly, especially once the rain falls on top of it beginning Monday afternoon. Given these factors, the upcoming rain will result in quite a bit of runoff.
