Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wilmington OH
1141 AM EDT Tue Mar 20 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
An area of low pressure will bring a mix of rain snow and then
snow to the region today through Wednesday. Accumulating snow
will be associated with this system.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A mix of rain and snow will transition over to all snow this
evening into tonight. The transition over to snow should occur
quickly. There is increasing confidence in a band of snow
developing across west central Ohio southward into southeast
Indiana overnight. These locations will likely see higher
snowfall totals with this system and therefore increased
snowfall values across this region slightly. Expect a large
portion of the accumulating snowfall to occur during the
overnight hours and therefore this will also help to aid in
snowfall accumulations. There is increasing potential for the
need to upgrade to a warning across at least a few counties in
southeast Indiana where there is the lower 4 inch warning
criteria. Will continue to monitor this need and issue any
additional necessary headlines this afternoon. For now will
continue winter weather advisory for tonight.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY/...
The secondary mid level low will shift off of the East Coast
through the day on Wednesday. This will allow for precipitation
to persist into Wednesday morning before beginning to taper off
through Wednesday afternoon.
The pressure gradient will remain tight enough to keep north
winds in the 15 to 25 mph range with some higher gusts possible.
The wet and heavy nature of the expected snow may help minimize
blowing and drifting, but the winds could create some problems
with falling branches if the heavy snow is able to accumulate
on trees.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The long term will open up with a potent upper level low located off
the east coast and mid level ridging across the west coast. As the
upper level trough axis pull east Wednesday night there is a weak
disturbance in the flow that will traverse the area, but forecast
soundings look rather dry so have kept the forecast dry at this
time. During the day Thursday surface high pressure will move in
from the west with high temperatures remaining only around 40
degrees (thanks to 850 MB temperatures around 6 degrees C below
zero).
Thursday night into Friday the forecast will remain precipitation
free and an upper level shortwave dives southeast out of Michigan
towards northeast Ohio. As the shortwave passes by towards the
northeast Friday a cold front will wash across the area. The front
will be a glancing blow with a tight gradient in 850 mb temperatures
forecast across the area. For now have just trended high
temperatures down for Friday.
On Saturday models start to diverge on the evolution of the pattern
as a potent upper level low is forecast to be off the west coast by
late Thursday. Pieces of energy will then break off from the parent
low and head east towards Ohio. During the day Saturday this first
wave of PV will cross the area bringing precipitation chances back
into the forecast. Thermal profiles at this time would support rain,
snow, and a rain snow mix at times. Precipitation then looks to head
east as the wave exits Sunday.
Late Sunday through the remainder of the extended significant
disagreement exists as the CMC and ECMWF have a potent upper level
low dive south out of Canada across the Northeast. This would mean
more below normal temperatures and dry conditions. The GFS on the
other hand is much more progressive with the wave on the west coast
and pushes it east at this time meaning warmer temperatures and
continued chances of precipitation. For now have kept the forecast
trended towards the cooler and less progressive ECMWF/ CMC
solutions.
&&
.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Mid level low pressure is moving slowly east across southwest
Ohio this morning. Widespread rain associated with this will
continue to work east across the region this morning.
Temperatures are right around freezing and as a result we are
seeing some freezing rain mixing in at times with the rain. As
the low moves east through later morning, the precipitation
should taper off from west to east. Cigs will continue to fall
into MVFR category and should remain there through the rest of
the day.
Another low pressure system will move east across the region
tonight into Wednesday. This will allow for precipitation to
redevelop later this afternoon and continue through the
remainder of the TAF period. Precipitation will likely start
off as rain but should change over to snow this evening and
overnight as cooler air moves into the region. Cigs and vsbys
will likely drop into IFR through the last half of the TAF
period.
OUTLOOK...MVFR/IFR ceilings and visibilities will continue
into Wednesday. MVFR ceilings and visibilities possible again
on Saturday.
