.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure is slowly building into the region this afternoon. A
potent low pressure system will bring accumulating ice and snow
tonight and Wednesday. High pressure and cold dry weather are
expected for Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Not many changes to forecast this morning with low clouds
starting to break from the northwest. Main concern for forecast
today will be the potent winter storm expected to impact the
area tonight into Wednesday.

Disturbance that brought light snow overnight is accelerating
east, with snow soon to exit the area. Trace amounts of freezing
drizzle are also possible this morning, and SPS has been issued
through 8 am for slick spots.

Dry weather is forecast for this afternoon during a brief visit
by high pressure. Do not expect much sunshine with clouds
increasing ahead of the next system due to arrive tonight.
Below normal highs will range from the mid 20s northwest, with
upper 20s to lower 30s in metro areas, up to the upper 30s far
south.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Potent winter weather system containing ample moisture will be
traveling through Kentucky to West Virginia tonight, before
moving to the Mid Atlantic Coast on Wednesday. Precip developing
in strong moisture transport and lift on the cold north side of
the low will impact the entire region with a wintry mix.
Current model soundings show mainly snow across the north, with
ice accumulations increasing near the Ohio River where a layer
of above freezing air is indicated around 3000 FT AGL. Expect 2
to 4 inches of snow across the north including Dayton and
Columbus, with light ice, while southern locations including
Cincinnati and Portsmouth may see 1 to 3 inches of snow, and 1
to 2 tenths of ice. Went with a Winter Weather Advisory for the
whole area except for West Central Ohio which may be spared the
worst conditions with an inch or two of snow. Precip should
start by midnight in the south, before spreading across the area
overnight. Precip will end Wednesday as the system moves well
east. Low temperatures in the 20s tonight will rise a few
degrees Wednesday, allowing some above freezing highs in the
south.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
In the wake of the mid week winter system, surface high pressure to
build across the region Wednesday night into Thursday. This high
will provide a period of dry weather. Temperatures look to be close
to 10 degrees below normal, with highs on Thursday from the mid 20s
northwest to the mid 30s southeast.

Warm advection wing of weak surface wave to lead to the development
of snow across the Great Lakes Thursday night. Model solution
differences exist on how far south the southern periphery of this
pcpn band will make it. Have limited pops to chance of snow across
the far northern counties.

Weak surface wave ripples east through Ohio Friday with associated
surface cold front dropping south through ILN/s FA. Have continued
chance pops across the northern half of the FA, prior to ending late
Friday night. Expect temperatures a little above normal with highs
Friday from the mid 30s north to the upper 40s south. This will
allow the southern band of pcpn to change to rain during the day.

Expect only a temporary dry period later Friday night into early
Saturday. Above normal temperatures to continue Saturday with highs
from the mid 30s northwest to the upper 40s southeast.

Mid level flow backs southwesterly with surface wave developing over
the Lower MS Vly Saturday and ejecting northeast across the TN
Valley and into the Ohio Valley Saturday night/Sunday. Model spread
exists regarding timing and placement of surface low/front. Have
used a blended approach and ramp pops over the southeast to likely
Saturday night/early Sunday. Have all rain initially acrs all but the
far northwest. Precipitation to end later Sunday as the wave tracks
off to the northeast.

A Surface high pressure to build across the region next Monday
offering dry weather. Temperatures closer to normal with highs on
Sunday and Monday generally from the lower 30s northwest to the mid
40s southeast.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Weak surface high pressure was located just northwest of the
area this morning with MVFR clouds slowly weakening. The MVFR
clouds are forecast to slowly erode this afternoon with winds
remaining relatively light.

The main concern for the aviation will be a strengthening
surface low pressure combined with widespread overrunning.
Precipitation type for the TAF sites will be as follows:

KDAY: All snow is forecast as both GFS and NAM forecast
soundings show the entire thermal profile below freezing.

KCVG/ KLUK: Precipitation is expected to start out as snow and
then begin to mix with PL and FZRA. Forecast low level thermal
profiles indicate the time with the highest probability of a
mix occurring between 9 and 12z.

KILN: It appears that KILN will mostly stay snow with PL
potentially mixing in between 8 and 12z.

KCMH/ KLCK: It appears that KCMH/ KLCK will mostly stay snow
with PL potentially mixing in between 9 and 12z.

As the low moves southwest to northeast parallel to the area
winds will pickup a bit as the gradient tightens. Momentum
transfer is indicating wind gusts up to 15 kts possible.
Widespread IFR will be likely. As the low pulls away dry air
will move across the area in the mid-levels. This will help
bring an end to the snow, but some freezing drizzle will be
possible on the back side. IFR conditions will slowly improve to
MVFR by Wednesday morning.

OUTLOOK...MVFR ceilings may persist Wednesday night into
Thursday morning. MVFR ceilings and visibilities will be
possible Saturday into Sunday.
