was located over Penderlea, or near Wallace, moving northwest at 40
mph.

.SYNOPSIS...
Tropical Storm Florence, centered inland across South Carolina,
will drift to the westward this weekend bringing additional
significant rainfall to the Carolinas. A subtle drying trend
will develop next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 845 AM Saturday...No significant changes were needed to
the forecast this morning as the wind field and rain bands
around Tropical Storm Florence continue to impact the area.
Excessive rainfall remains the largest concern, and the
potential for flash flooding expanding in area and severity is
maximized across southeastern North Carolina where at least two
long spiral bands of heavy tropical rain will remain today. The
09Z run of the HRRR has an explicit forecast of 20 inches of
rain across the city of Wilmington through 03Z this evening, an
amount which would shatter the all-time daily precip record for
Wilmington, 13.38 inches, set during Hurricane Floyd on
September 15, 1999.
Winds have now become a secondary concern. Gusts along the
beaches have fallen below 50 mph as the pressure gradient around
Florence weakens. Although tidal anomalies are falling as winds
diminish, another round of coastal flooding is expected within
the storm surge warning area with the early afternoon high tide.
Given beach erosion and damage to the dune systems over the
past couple of days, susceptibility to additional coastal
flooding is high.

Discussion from 300 AM follows...
Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the entire
forecast area. Tropical Storm Florence in the vicinity of Myrtle
Beach overnight, will trek slowly westward across South
Carolina through today. Outer rain bands will produce periods of
torrential rain with stronger gusty winds in these rain bands,
plus the potential for isolated tornadoes. A Tornado Watch was
extended until 5 pm for the threat of isolated tornadoes. The
winds will begin to diminish slowly, but strong gusty winds will
continue, especially in outer rain bands, at the beaches and
closer to the center of Florence as it moves slowly westward.
SPC continues a heightened risk of tornadoes as strong low level
SE flow maintains favorable low level wind profiles in the NE
quadrant of Florence. The 0 to 1 km shear remains up between 200
to 400 m2/s2 for much of today.
A Flash Flood Watch will remain in effect for the potential for
flooding, and Flash Flood Warnings were focused on the actual
areas of torrential rain running across much of Cape Fear
northward to Surf City and westward out toward I-95. This
rainfall will be quite persistent through today as Florence
moves very slowly westward and could potentially see upwards of
15 to 20 inches to add to storm total across portions of mainly
NC. Tough to pinpoint the exact evolution of the rain bands, but
overall expect the greatest pcp to fall across NC, although
periods of heavy rain will be possible over northeast SC
especially later today into tonight. A truly tropical air mass
will remain in place with pcp water values up around 3 inches in
deep layered moisture. Temps should reach into the lower 80s
most places today and 70s overnight once again.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Saturday... Low level jet and a tongue of warm
moist air will be streaming into the region on Sunday well east
but still associated with the remains of Florence. Saturation
beneath a very high FZL of 15kft leading to PW values of 2.2-2.4
inches indicative of efficient warm-rain processes and thus the
possibility of some more unwelcome rainfall albeit in much more
localized areas. The good news is that the lift will transition
from deep layer early in the day to just low level later in the
day as the mid level flow starts to contain weaker embedded
vorticity. Surface flow remains south to southeasterly Sunday
night and grows very light. Low level jet remains just strong
enough that a few showers should still manage to be advected
across the area. On Monday the deep layer circulation associated
with Florence will open up to a wave/trough lifting into the
Northeast. Locally this yields deep southwesterly flow which
given such rich moisture will still leave the area prone to
elevated rain chances.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 315 PM Friday...Lingering moisture from Florence coupled
with heating may lead to isolated afternoon showers and
thunderstorms across the area early in the period. By mid-week
both the GFS/ECMWF show a mid-level ridge building over the
southeast. Subsidence under the ridge should limit precip
chances into the end of the week. Late in the period a 5h trough
moving across southern Canada and into the Northeast will shift
the ridge offshore. The trough will push a cold front toward
the region as the period ends. Shower and thunderstorm chances
will increase slightly as the period ends. Temperatures will be
near climo at the start of the period, rising above climo by
midweek.

.AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 12Z...Slow moving Florence will drift west southwest
through the forecast period. Look for tropical strength winds at
all terminals with MVFR cigs/vsbys with tempo IFR flight conditions.
Some decrease in wind speeds and improvement in flight conditions
late in the TAF period as Florence drifts off to the west of the
terminals. KILM/KLBT TAF amends not sked due to ASOS outages.
Extended Outlook...Breezy with MVFR likely early Sun with gradual
improvement east to west Sun into Monday. VFR Tue-Thurs.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 845 AM Saturday...No significant changes were made to
today's forecast as the center of Tropical Storm Florence
continues to drift westward across South Carolina. Onshore winds
will steadily decrease through the afternoon and evening,
however area buoys and piers are still showing reaching 35-43
knots at the current time. With the large wind field of Florence
still extending hundreds of miles off the coast, a large onshore
fetch is sustaining seas of 9-14 feet across the coastal waters.
These will also slowly diminish with time, however boating
conditions remain extremely hazardous at this time. Discussion
from 300 AM follows...
Tropical Storm Florence will continue its very slow progress as
it begins its trek westward across SC from just near Myrtle
Beach overnight. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect. The
strongest on shore push will remain across the NC waters where
widespread wind gusts to 35 to 45 kts were seen overnight and
will gradually diminish through tonight as Florence moves
westward and weakens. Seas generally in the 10 to 15 ft range
will subside slowly down to 7 to 9 ft by Sun morning.
SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Saturday...Only a gradual abating of wind and seas
through the period as Florence finally accelerates off to the
NW and then NE. Tropical headlines likely dropped by the short
term but a Small Craft Advisory still likely needed for the
duration as seas are slow to drop below 6 feet even as winds
drop below thresholds.
LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 315 PM Friday...Expect a southwest flow of 10-15 knots as
any troughing remaining from the remnants of Florence seems to
morph into a resemblance of the Piedmont Trough. The trough may
push to the coast with a subtle wind shift Wednesday but
confidence is low. Seas will continue on a downward trend
through mid week dropping from 3 to 5 down to 2 to 4 ft on Wed.
